This week Phil wraps up our Ephesians series, by unpacking Ephesians 6.10-23. Focus for the passage: In the previous passage, Paul describes a counter-cultural Christian household (within his cultural setting), but in this passage he speaks of another reality that works against the unity and transformation of the church: the reality of evil as an active force and how we are to resist it. Importantly, Paul has referred to ‘spiritual powers/devil’ at numerous points in this letter (e.g. Ephesians 2.2, Ephesians 4.27), so Paul is not bringing in a new idea here, but addressing the idea in more depth.

This week Karen continues with part 8 of the Ephesians series, unpacking Ephesians 4.17-6.9. Paul uses the language of ‘taking off’ and ‘putting on’ or ‘formerly’ and ‘now’ to illustrate how we are to live our lives since we became followers of Jesus, including instructions for a Christian household living within the new humanity created in Christ (within Paul’s cultural setting).

This week Ruth continues with part 7 of the Ephesians series, unpacking Ephesians 4.1-16. This passage is about unity not uniformity. Paul is talking to those who were insiders in God’s story (the Jews), who may now seem like outsiders and, the outsiders (the Gentiles), who have become insiders. Despite their differences, together they have become part of a new family, a multi-ethnic community.

This week Viv continues with part 6 of the Ephesians series, unpacking Ephesians 3.1-21. Paul prays that we would be empowered by God’s love to live radically new lives, that look like those described in the next few chapters. Living like that on the outside springs from God’s work within us on the inside and the company we keep. So that we can say, "I have a new identity that God is forming in me, so I can trust God to help me live in a whole new way, and find encouragement from those around me".

In response (“for this reason”) Paul prays directly for those he’s writing to, for them to know the power of God. Paul’s prayer is as wide in scope and deep in beauty, speaking of our “glorious inheritance”, the “incomparable power”, and the authority of the risen Christ.

Chapter 1 opens with a beautiful Jewish-style poem, in which Paul praises God the Father for the amazing things that he’s done through Christ Jesus. In whom, we find the grace of God. Verses 1.3-14 is a single sentence from Paul and uses different verbs over and over to gush about what God has done, including explicit references to the work of all three parts of the trinity: Father, Son and Spirit.
