Today I am talking about renovations. No, not the kind you see on HGTV, but the kind that matters beyond our earthly homes. We are talking about our heart and souls. As I see the DIY craze and the emphasis on our homes in our visually saturated society, I often wonder what our world would be like if we spent that amount of time and resources on our insides. On our hearts. You see, years ago I gave up trying to create a picture-perfect home, became satisfied with what we had, and instead turned my attention toward my soul work. In the middle of a super busy and often overwhelming season of life right now, I am choosing to intentionally slow down. I have found this to be so necessary right now and it is so renewing and refreshing. I need to slow down in order to restore and in order to hear His voice above my own- that is often going a million miles a minute in my mind. I am talking today about how summer is a great time to slow down and truly live, instead of rushing to the next thing. We often think that our joy is dependent on our circumstances- when things are going well, there's peace, and all is still, we have joy. We feel like God has given us favor. But what about when the storms are swirling around us? Are we being punished? Do we not have enough faith? When we say we surrender our lives to God, we must really mean it. Often, I say it but I think I secretly mean, ok God, I surrender so now you will bless me. Not always so. We must recognize that God is in the storms as much as the stillness. We all know that expectations usually don't line up with reality in the end. We often have a picture in our mind of how things are supposed to be and then feel let down that the reality hasn't lined up what we had hoped. Today though, I want to dig even deeper into our expectations. Is it possible that expectations are actually distracting us from our true purposes? Are we so busy living for an expectation that we aren't living the life right in front of us? Are we living for an ideal and not embracing the here and now? Our one true and greatest expectation in life is the hope we have in Jesus and the reality of eternity. And through that expectation, which is the only one that will provide everlasting joy, will we live out each moment purposefully here on earth. Is the Bible a priority in your family? Do you teach it daily to your children? Do they see you as a lover of God's Word? All of these things I have been convicted of over the years. We have gone from not reading the Bible together to now making it a priority daily. How that has looked has changed over the years depending on the season we are in, and I am sharing all the ways we have taught the Bible in our family. Even how we taught our kids their school solely from God's Word for one year. I have seen what it is like to live with and without the Bible. There is nothing more valuable than equipping the next generation with the Truth. Our culture is a battlefield right now and the most important thing our children can have in navigating that world is the absolute Truth of God's Word! It is not enough for them to hear the truth, or to know the truth, but to WALK in it and live it! It still blows my mind that we are at this point. After 13 years of homeschooling, and getting off to a very rough start, we are officially graduating our oldest and she is off to college in the fall! After a year of uncertainty about her future, and not knowing the direction life would take her, God is ending this journey the same way He began it- by showing us that when we OBEY and SURRENDER our plans to Him, His plans prevail!
