Dan and Garrett are joined by Jill Malcolm and Ryan Silbertsein, editors of Cinedelphia, to discuss the latest in one of the longest running monster movie franchises - Godzilla. Shin Godzilla returns to the aesthetic and more overtly political nature of the original 1954 movie, while expanding on the mythology of the creature and utilizing modern effects to achieve a larger scale version of the man-in-a-rubber-suit action that kept this series alive for decades. More about the response to environmental disaster than to nuclear disaster, Shin Godzilla is somewhat of an absurd comedy about the failings of bureaucracy in the face of forces that can't controlled or understood. We didn't know a Kaiju version of In The Loop was something we wanted, but it turns it out it's exactly the thing we needed to get excited about Godzilla again. This is a film that has helped define the tastes and sensibilities of an entire generation, yet as that generation grows, this movie grows with them. Though Rob is the hero of this story, he's a tragic, foolish hero who, like a broken record, must repeat his mistakes over and over, and take the wrong lessons from them time and time again before truly coming to terms with his own commitment issues. And like Rob, our generation has at times taken the wrong lessons from this movie, a film that demands revisiting every few years so you can reassess it and use it as a guide to reassess yourself. It's truly incredible how relatable this remains, but how much more you will take away from it with each subsequent viewing. Garrett and Dan thought long and hard and finally decided what their first Cronenberg dissection should be (and no, that's not a clue that it's The Fly). They eventually came to the conclusion that men birthing guns is an image that demands an in-depth reading (as does Debbie Harry as a brunette) and thus the boys decided to enter the Videodrome. Cronenberg's techno-thriller meets body-horror is more prescient than anyone could've known at the time, and not just because James Woods turned out to be a maniac off the screen as well. Her attentiveness to the growing relationship between Utah and Bodie makes the cat-and-mouse chases between the two characters have real weight and stakes that we often don't get in films of this variety. Dan and Garrett return with guests Pete Steele and Mike Spano. Mike provided the boys with a copy of The Super Cops, a rare and underseen exploitation film from 1974, directed by Gordon Parks, the man who made Shaft. Based on a book about two real New York police officers who were known as "Batman and Robin," and eventually became the inspiration for Starsky and Hutch, the movie wasn't available for a long time, until Edgar Wright petitioned the Warner Archives to release it as he was going into production on Hot Fuzz, which is loosely inspired by elements from The Super Cops. The boys take their time discussing the exceptional talents of Ron Leibman, the absolutely hilarious manner in which The Super Cops run, and the fantastic photography by Parks and his cinematographer, Dick Kratina. The boys dig deep on what cultural anxieties Darabont is wrestling with out there in the mist, as well as how this black and white version serves the sometimes hammy, sometimes over the top script on which his terrifying gut punch is built.
