You Can't Handle The Truth

By some measures, it's the most successful movie of all time — and it was the Number One Movie in America for a record-setting 16 weeks! Returning guest Addi Twigg (@addiful) joins us and selects E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the timeless tale of a boy and his alien bestie. Brendan Fraser and his Harvard Pals learn life lessons from a wacky vagabond played by a reasonable facsimile of Joe Pesci! It's WITH HONORS, which is way more of a Madonna single than a movie but somehow won a sleepy 1994 weekend. Is this a hidden gem, or just a movie with young Brendan Fraser's butt in it? This week's recommendations include mixed reviews from F9, No Sudden Move and Fear Street 1994, plus earnest recommendations for the 1984 action thriller Runaway and the 2017 horror satire Mayhem.

Locate your Sunday shoes, put them on, then proceed to kick them off! We're investigating the (checks notes) TRUE STORY of a town where dancing is illegal and the wide-eyed young man who decided to dance his troubles away! (There's no way to make this plot sound good, sorry.) Two of three hosts are surprisingly unimpressed! This week's recommendations: Kahmeela makes a high-pitched "eh" about AWAKE while Robin has a non-recommendation that greatly disappoints Sean, who in turn recommends Bo Burnham's INSIDE in spite of Robin's valid objection.

We want you to hit us as hard as you can! (Not really, we're very passive people.) Fight Club was just barely a NOMIA, but remains one of the most landmark films of the '90s! Will we still love it? Can we get past the legions of people who completely missed the point? Can it grab the show's highest rating yet? Listen and find out! This week's recommendations: Robin is ambivalent about Those Who Wish Me Dead, Kahmeela is ambivalent about Conjuring 3, Sean is really into In the Heights!

Oh wow, it's Steven Seagal time. Are we prepared? Is anyone? Somewhat late in the mysterious, fabled Era of Seagal, the notorious kick-man took a trip down to Kentucky to try and find some jugs of green ooze, while romancing Marg Helgenberger and fixing Harry Dean Stanton's porch. Somehow, it's LESS straightforward than that! This week's recommendations: Kahmeela finds herself delighted by KING OF STATEN ISLAND. Sean shrugs at new releases and goes way back for the 1942 screwball comedy I MARRIED A WITCH. And Robin, of all people, is big into SAINT MAUD.

This podcast presents Quentin Tarantino presents Miramax presents HERO! Zhang Yimou's epic, eye-popping wuxia film was an Academy Award nominee ... and then a NOMIA two full years later. The rollout got weird. But it's still a near-classic full of beautiful fight sequences, intense color palettes and caligraphy! This week's recommendations: Sean talks about a bunch of stuff then quickly recommends SHIVA BABY, Kahmeela is big into I CARE A LOT and Robin dove deep and found F/X.

It's another fan vote! After a neck-and-neck race, the '90s Hot Topic set won out with THE CRAFT! Can anyone on the panel be objective about this gift-wrapped parcel of our youth? Why would you steal from a witch store? Why so many snakes? These and more questions, as we record with perfect love and perfect trust! This week's recommendations: Kahmeela enjoyed THE OUT SIDE STORY, Robin was just fine with THE MITCHELLS VS. THE MACHINES and Sean has no particular quarrel with THINGS HEARD & SEEN. But everyone still loves KARATE KID.

Take a little Halloween, a little Scream, a whole lot of Jason Voorhees and most of Freaky Friday and you get ... a mid-pandemic number one movie in America! FREAKY climbed above the pile of 2020 theatrical releases (it was a small pile) to take the top spot for two weeks. It was ... pretty good? No one hates this! A refreshing episode! The recommendations are kind of all over the place this time, but Robin likes the sitcom HAPPY ENDINGS, Sean recommends STOWAWAY and IN THE EARTH and Kahmeela invites you to relax with THUNDER FORCE.

Just be glad Sean and Robin waited until the next morning to record this, their immediate post-ceremony phone call was mostly just enraged noises. It was an Oscars unlike any other! In that it was even more weird and disappointing than usual. Breaking down the fumbles and few glimmers of joy from an Oscar night we're looking forward to forgetting!

An unpleasant rich kid wants to own Richard Pryor! We're not making that sound bad to make a point, that's the actual premise! THE TOY stole a weekend from the alien juggernaut of 1982, adding to a long list of Pryor's hits; were the scathing reviews that greeted it on release wrong? This week's recommendations: Kahmeela and Robin have made it to the dispiriting conclusion of ALLEN V FARROW, and think you should watch it. Sean's kind of so-so on NOBODY, but bullish on SLAXX, the horror movie about a killer pair of pants.

Sean and Robin both made it through Justice League! Y'know, mostly. Between them, they watched at least 6 1/2 combined hours of Zack Snyder's oddly square-shaped artistic vision. Now, they grab the mics like the Flash grabbing a passing a hot dog to try to figure out: Was all that worth it?

It's a bonus episode, as Sean & Robin gather for the annual sleepy analysis of the Academy Award nominations! Will this be the year that the pleasant surprises outweigh the frustrating snubs? (Please note: That year will never come.) We talk Lakeith, Lindo, Leslie and Love & Monsters, plus a lot more!

That's Coming TO America, not Coming TWO America. Though we cover them both in this past-and-present trip to Zamunda! The winner of our latest audience poll, Coming to America is absolutely having a cultural moment. How well does it hold up 33 years later, and how does it do when viewed back-to-back with its sequel? This week's recommendations: Kahmeela is gripped by ALLEN V FARROW. Robin has to explain what SHIRLEY VALENTINE is, but it sounds lovely. And Sean is mildly positive about YA scifi thingy CHAOS WALKING.

In an unexpected feat of timing, we've got Oprah and a troubled princess! THE PRINCESS & THE FROG, Disney's penultimate hand-drawn feature, has a lot going for it and just as much going against it. But hey, there's a great villain song and an alligator that wants to play the trumpet! This week's recommendations: Kahmeela recommends the Netflix series BEHIND HER EYES, and gives kind of a soft endorsement to the new WRONG TURN. Robin likes MINARI and was delighted by the Scorsese classic AFTER HOURS. Sean went western again, voicing his support for the 1966 adventure EL DORADO.

Despite this movie utterly vanishing from our cultural memory, it was the fourth top-grossing movie of 2008! Lots of people went to see Will Smith drunk fly, redeem himself, and then deal with a whole second plot because the movie realized it wasn't long enough yet! This week's recommendations: Robin went on a tear and recommends Judas & The Black Messiah, Nomadland and Sound of Metal. (She's got mixed feelings about I Care a Lot.) Kahmeela found satisfying spookiness in Netflix's series The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel. And Sean is into the Albert Brooks classic Defending Your Life, and is concerned after seeing the Billie Eilish documentary.

Our second straight comedy sequel is MEET THE FOCKERS, the stunningly successful follow-up to the movie where Robert De Niro asked Ben Stiller about his nipples. Everyone and their mother (literally) went to see Barbara and the familiar Fockers back in 2004, but was it any good? (How many movies that rely on a swearing toddler are actually that good?) This week's recommendations: Kahmeela gives a ringing endorsement to JUDAS AND THE BLACK MESSIAH, but is more skeptical about MALCOLM & MARIE. Sean didn't like BARB & STAR, but encourages you to go back and revisit MULHOLLAND DRIVE. Plus, a question: What movies get a perfect 100? Let us know!

We're going back to Jump Street! (Even though we, as a podcast, never went there in the first place!) Let's take a look at the comedy sequel 22 Jump Street, discuss its weird proposed follow-ups and find ourselves pleasantly surprised that it's just straight-up funny throughout! This week's recommendations: Sean likes the award-nominated Shudder original La Llorana, and recommends revisiting the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Robin and Kahmeela unite to say #freebritney and recommend the Hulu/NYT doc Framing Britney Spears. And Robin doesn't like the New Mutants, but who does?
