Medical Myths
31/01/2022 Duración: 14minMyth and superstition play a huge role in our daily lives and this is a big part of all cultures. Many people carry good luck charms, seek fortune tellers, and even look to the stars for guidance. Do these things help? Are we doing them because the generations before us told us to do it? Is it tradition? We have many modern-day myths and cultural beliefs that really don't have a basis, but there's a lot of that in medicine too. In this episode of the Medgeeks podcast, we'll be discussing some of the most common medical myths today. - Our goal at Medgeeks is to help you live the life you want to live as you navigate a career in medicine. Vampires and Porphyria
10/01/2022 Duración: 24minWe all love movies and they're a great escape from reality. More often than not, we find ourselves rooting for the "good guys"...but sometimes there are villains who capture our attention as well. There is no greater example of a villain (captivating the main-stage, Hollywood and audiences world-wide) than Dracula! In this episode, we'll be discussing how the mythology of vampires is actually rooted in medicine. It can be traced back to hundreds of years of misunderstandings, cultural and religious beliefs, and most importantly, a fear of an unknown disease: Porphyria. - We just put together a brand new course for primary care clinicians, which we're looking to give away for free! Hemochromatosis
03/01/2022 Duración: 21minSometime ago, when we were in training, there were a lot of diseases we were exposed to that were rare and difficult to understand. Over time we did practice questions, went through rotations, and eventually, these diseases that were once difficult, were no longer as hard. It's funny what we learn in school as we get exposed to a great deal of diseases, syndromes, and disorders that are rare and incredibly interesting. Each disease feels like an episode of House. But, when you get into the "real world", you realize those rare diseases that were once so interesting, don't seem to show up as often as we thought they would. But, when they do, it causes a little discomfort, because we remember some of it. We think we know something. But, we aren't completely sure we have the answer. And that's why I decided to do today's podcast on a disease that we all remember. This disease affects various organs and can masquerade as so many things. Today, we'll be discussing hereditary hemochromatosis. That's right you reme
