Episode 225 is John Barile. John is 30 plus year Paramedic with Cary Area EMS. John has served as a firefighter, educator, paramedic, Chief, and numerous other roles in public safety. We talk about John's start in EMS, his role on National Medical Response Team, and he offers his advice to those new to the EMS world. 

Episode 224 is Graeme Taylor who spent 21 years working in EMS in British Columbia, Canada, and the author of "A Paramedic Tales". The book provides an uncensored look at the life of first responders. Graeme is living in Australia and we discuss how he ended up down under his EMS career, and he shares a few stories from the book. 

Episode 223 is Michael Sayre. Michael is the Medical Director for the Seattle Fire Department and works as an EM Physician at Harborview Medical Center. He also serves as the Medical Director for the Michael K. Copass Paramedic Training Program at the University of Washington. Our discussion takes us from Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, and to Seattle as we explore Michael's path in medicine and EMS. We spend time talking about the Seattle Fire Department, their Paramedic Academy, their response to COVID-19, and the future of EMS. 

Episode 222 is Marion Houle. Marion is the Chief of Cary Area EMS and was my replacement when I moved to the Pacific Northwest. Marion is making his second appearance on the podcast. We catch up on how the new position and transition is going? We discuss how things for him are different in his new role. Marion and I during my tenure had many conversations about hockey and football, which we continued during the podcast. Note: This podcast was recorded prior to Wake County Government's decision to terminate the 911 contract with Cary Area EMS.

Episode 221 is Travis Dierks. Travis is an Emergency Physician out of Spokane WA and the founder of EMSConnect. EMSConnect is an online EMS Education platform that is nationally accredited. Travis is also a Medical Advisor to services in the Spokane area. Travis explains how he goes from Oceanography to Medical School, his first encounters with EMS, as well as few stories from his residency. We talk about EMSConnect's beginning and the success of the platform. 

Episode 220 is Matthew Heneghan. Matthew is the author of A Medic's Mind which is an inspiring story of Matthew's resiliency, tenacity, hope, and will to overcome numerous obstacles. The book covers a difficult 2 years of Matthew's life and we discuss these difficulties. Matthew was in the Canadian Army as a medic as his struggles began. After leaving the military he became a civilian Paramedic and the issues continued. We talk about his army and civilian medic career, what caused the obstacles and what led to his successful comeback. Besides being an author, Matthew is a blogger and podcaster and we touch on these adventures as he tells his story.  

Episode 219 is Tricia Casey. Tricia is the creator of the STARS Program in 2014 at Rock Township Ambulance District in Jefferson County, MO. The program is so successful that Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital adopted the program and hired Tricia to run the program. What is STARS? Tricia will let us know in our discussion, what the program is dedicated to, and how it was started and grown. I will give you a hint that STARS is kid-based, and Tricia knows first hand why this program for kids is important. Tricia was the 2018 JEMS EMS10 Innovation award for STARS. Tricia is a practicing paramedic in the St. Louis area, and you will her dedication and passion for STARS.

Episode 218 is David Davis. David is the Founder and Editor of the Ambulance News Desk (ambulancenewsdesk.com) out of the United Kingdom. The site launched over a year ago with a focus on ambulance and EMS news in the UK. David last week launched the site globally because of the success of the service. We discuss David's unique path into the EMS and ambulance world and how the Ambulance News Desk started. Before entering this world, David tells his story of dropping out of school, becoming a Reporter, and even his work in public relations.  

In honor of Max the Paramedic Therapy Dog retirement a re-podcast of Episode 87 with Tracy Levesque.Episode 87:Tracy Levesque is a Paramedic in Ottawa, Canada where their EMS system responds to 120,000 calls a year. Tracy is a BLS Paramedic, What is BLS Paramedic? Tracy will let us know the answer during our conversation. After 26 years on the job, Tracy is breaking in a new partner. Max is a Golden Retriever and is the only Therapy Dog in Canada for EMS providers. Tracy provides all the details on how the Dog Program came about, what her colleagues think about Max and what Max has done for Ottawa EMS. Tracy and I also discuss Max's Twitter ability (yes I follow Max and tweet with him). Besides the Dog Program, we talk about EMS in Canada.

Episode 217 is Jonathon Feit. Jonathon is the Co-Founder and Chief Executive of Beyond Lucid Technology. You will hear how the software company uses technology to connect ambulances and hospitals prior to the patient's arrival. Jonathon is a well known presenter and has published numerous papers and articles within the EMS industry. He also is a host of a podcast. You will hear his dedication to public safety and linking EMS and technology. Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon, and the Center for Emergency Medicine are a few items that Jonathon and I have in common. We talk about his interest in EMS and how he was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome among other topics. Jonathon does not hold back his thoughts on any of the topics.

Episode 216 is Dr. Paul Louis. Paul is the co-founder of Aerosoless Medical. The Safety Neb is a new nebulizer mask with viral filters that were created by Aerosoless. Episode 215 is Jeff Jarvis, MD. Jeff Jarvis is the EMS Medical Director for Williamson County EMS and Marble Falls Area EMS in Central Texas. He is board certified in both Emergency Medicine and Emergency Medical Services and retains his active paramedic license today. He is a fellow podcaster with his podcast “EMS Lighthouse Project Podcast”. We talk about his career, EMS culture, podcasting, research. and his passion for EMS, the providers, reearch, and taking care of patients.

Episode 214 is Steve's New Adventure. It has been a while since a new podcast has aired. In this abbreviated podcast the question is answered. 

Episode 213 is Jeff Payne. In 2019, when Jeff was the Chief of the Dayton Ohio Fire Department, his department faced 2 mass casualty events in a short period. The Dayton area was hit with tornadoes and then an active shooter event. Jeff talks about the incidents, response, lessons learned, and more. We also discuss Jeff's career as a Marine, his career in the fire department, and his leadership style. 

Episode 212 is Dr. Marvin Wayne. Marv as he likes to be called is the Medical Program Director for the emergency medical services system for Bellingham, Washington, and Whatcom County for the past 45 years. Marv left surgery to enter the world of Emergency Medicine and EMS. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1943 and graduated from Mumford High School and traveled all over including England and Vietnam before settling in the pacific northwest. Marv takes us through a difficult surgery and situation while in Vietnam that you don't want to miss. We discuss his career, his Army Service, EMS in his local area, EMS in today's world, and a history lesson regarding the AED.

Episode 210 is Mario Aranibar and Sallie Abbas. This episode travels virtually from Cary, NC to Cochabamba, Bolivia, In the early 2000s, through Sallie Abba and Partners of the America's Cary Area EMS (I was joined by past guests on the podcast Greg Edwards and Marion Houle) traveled on a medical/educational mission to Bolivia. There we met Chief Mario Aranibar and his amazing volunteers of SAR Bolivia. Mario has a long history of public safety service as an innovator, leader, EMT, firefighter, HazMat expert, and parachute jumper. I catch up with both Sallie and Mario to reminisce about the trip to Bolivia.

Episode 208 is Matthew Konya. Matt is an associate attorney with Page, Wolfberg & Wirth, LLC, and has been involved in EMS for nearly 15 years. He obtained his first responder certification while in high school, and his emergency medical technician certification at Penn State University. After graduating from Penn State, he worked full time as an EMT in State College Pennsylvania for four years before attending law school at Widener University Commonwealth. Matt continues to works part-time as an EMT. We discuss the article he wrote at JEMS.com regarding behavioral health in EMS, burnout, and COVID and how they intersect.
