There is a time to listen to and then respond to our critics - not necessarily for their benefit - or even ours, but for the sake of those who believe in us. This difficult exercise requires being 'reasonable'. There's four crucial things to remember in our pursuit of being reasonable. We draw from the life and work of Jeremiah to discover them.

Jeremiah the prophet denounced the idolatrous practice that many women of his day had been lured into and put the blame squarely at the men who were responsible to teach, guide, protect and lead. There are several lessons for us to learn today from this episode in the life of Jeremiah.

The story continues. Jeremiah pleaded with them not to run. But they did. They sought a place to hide. They discovered that there is One from Whom you can never hide. No matter how guilty you may be; no matter how ashamed you are; you cannot run from the One from Whom there is no hiding. Here's why it's still beautifully true today.

Before the capital of Egypt was renamed 'Cairo' it used to be called "Memphis". The people who survived the Babylonian destruction of their city had been warned not to go to Memphis (Egypt). This seemed illogical and unreasonable. But the prophet Jeremiah had given them the word of the Lord and shared God's heart for them. Yet, they rebelled. There are some beautiful things we can learn about God and His care for us from this sad episode from the Book of Jeremiah.
