Messages That Matter By Dr. Andrew Corbett

The Bible opens with "In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth" and then states that He created "all the hosts of heavens" which introduces the reader to the two realms of God's Kingdom. When He sent His Son into the world, Jesus conquered the forces of darkness by the Cross, His resurrection, His ascension, and through the Church from Pentecost. This is Part 7 of the Darkness series.

The last week before Christ’s death on the Cross began with His triumphant entrance into Jerusalem on 'Palm Sunday’. This week is referred to as ‘Holy Week’ and ‘the passion of Christ’ because it is marked by His atoning suffering. But two weeks before this holy week, Christ took His disciples to the northern most border of Israel, to the towns of Caesarea Philippi, then up to Mount Hermon in the ancient territory of Bashan where the forces of darkness dwelt. Taking Peter, James and John up Mount Hermon one night, Jesus was transfigured in the presence of Moses and Elijah - not for their benefit, or the benefit of His disciples, but as a statement to the powers of darkness. His entrance into the enemy’s lair was an open bating of the enemy and his forces of darkness. This is Part 6, THE ORIGINS OF DARKNESS.

The beings that comprise the forces of darkness - evil - were once good, holy, and faithful to God. In this short excursus, I look at the heavenly realm of light - where the creatures we generally call 'angels' are. These magnificent creatures are faithful to God and flourish in their service to Him. There is a hierarchy of angels referred to in the Bible and it seems the God had even established a 'divine council' where many of these beings had authority to intervene in the affairs of our world.

When the powers of darkness orchestrated the crucifixion of Christ - they thought they had killed forever the Lord of Life! But Christ's death led to their defeat, and His resurrection and ascension affirmed and confirmed it! It is my pastoral heart in this message that seeks to build the confidence of every believer that Christ is Lord of all and has conquered sin, death, and the powers of darkness.

There is a global pandemic that is effecting people of all nationalities, classes, educational backgrounds, and levels of physical health. It began way before the COVID pandemic began and has been far more devastating. This deadly and destructive pandemic is “disconnection” which results in isolation, loneliness, relationship breakdown, and poor mental health. It leads to a depletion in social awareness and emotional intelligence. This pandemic is a greater challenge to the church than any of the issues that have surrounded our dealing with COVID. Lockdowns, masks, and mandates, have only furthered the spread of the disconnection virus and it is up to Christian leaders to consider how we reinvigorate our understanding and appreciation of biblical ecclesiology (the doctrine of the church). This series, the ONE ANOTHER series, is an exploration of how God’s intention for His Church is the antidote to the disconnection virus.

Part 2 of the Advent series - The Unexpected Christmas.

The Advent season is usually regarded as the season leading up to Christmas, but it literally means 'the appearing' of the incarnated God. The early Christians used spend the 12 days leading up to December 25th fasting each day until 3PM (except on Sunday because that was a day for celebrating Christ's resurrection), and then for Christmas Day and the following 12 days they 'feasted' in celebration of the incarnation of Christ. This instalment is the first in the Advent series, "Where is He Who Is Born The King?"

Life is a risk. Every day you take risks. You simply cannot live without taking risks! Sometimes we hold back from taking risks due to fear of the unknown, and as a result we miss out on the reward that can only be earned by taking a risk. There are two ways to take a risk and two ways to learn from taking risks that did not work. In this series Dr. Corbett explores how to take risks wisely to improve your chances of success. It is important in the process to know that there are some normal life-risks where success or escape cannot be guaranteed - such as pain and suffering, failure, rejection, relationship breakdowns, and most seriously our eternal destiny.
