The apostle Paul is often considered to be a rather cold-hearted man. On the occasions when I have asked different women if they would have appreciated being pastored by him, it has been met with a resounding “No!” I suspect this is because Paul is similarly perceived as a male-chauvinist due to his various comments about women needing to be quiet in church and not permitted to teach a man. If this is your opinion of Paul, it is my hope that you might come to soften your view of him after completing this study of what are his final surviving epistles before he was executed at the command of Caesar Nero in AD 64. In addition to this negative opinion about the apostle Paul there are those who see him as a bigot and fundamentalist who has no place in shaping the Christianity of the current times. It is my hope that I can demonstrate that what Paul wrote in these epistles was indeed inspired by the Holy Spirit to a person and audience around AD 62 but still has divinely ordained relevance to our times. Within the household, good conduct was encouraged through the bestowing of honour, and bad conduct was discouraged through shame. How does shame work in today's culture — especially in the Church?

One ancient scholar wrote that the strength of the empire was build on the strength of the 'Household'. To appreciate what Christ intends His Church to be, it is helpful to understand what this concept means.

In Ephesians 2:19, the Apostle Paul describes the Church as 'The Household of God'. To understand what this meant to the first Christians helps us to understand today why the Church is so central to God's plan.

When you imagine how the churches described in the New Testament conducted their church services, What do you see? Interestingly the churches described in the New Testament are described as “Households”. The houses of the Greco-Roman world during the First Century were designed to accommodate ‘Households’. These Households formed the structure and basis of the early churches.

Based on the Apostle Paul's Corinthian benediction, we see that it is not only possible to have fellowship with the Holy Spirit — it is actually commended to us to do so. For anyone who enters into fellowship with the Holy Spirit they will soon discover that one of the clearest evidences of this spiritual fellowship is transformation into the likeness of Christ's character.

Becoming a Christian is only possible by a work of the Holy Spirit. But this work in the heart and soul of a believer begins well before they become a believer. In fact, the Holy Spirit will often prepare a person for their destiny well before they are converted. It is the Holy Spirit that enables a person to find their place in life and to do so with great satisfaction and a strong sense of fulfilment.

Christianity is not merely some vague mental ascent to some irrelevant religious ideals. On the contrary, Christianity begins in a person's soul via a spiritual transformation that only the Holy Spirit can achieve. But this is not all, not only does the Spirit wash and transform a soul to be forgiven and cleansed, He also immerses the believer in Himself in what Christ referred to as being baptised with the Spirit.
