In this khutbah, Shaykh Faraz Rabbani reminds the believers that it is Allah who gives guidance. Out of His tremendous and unimaginable mercy, Allah has given us all kinds of means to seek and attain this guidance. One of those means is what Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) referred to as sayyid al-istighfar, meaning the foremost ways in seeking Allah’s forgiveness. This formula of asking Allah for forgiveness answers many key questions on Islamic belief. Who is Allah? What Allah’s relationship to creation? What does one owe Allah Most High? The sayyid al-isitghfar is a lesson in affirming Allah’s absolute oneness (tawheed), affirming who is your Lord. It also helps us to realize everything that one receives is ultimately from Allah and Him alone. Text, transliteration and translation of sayyid al-istighfar can be found below. اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لا إِلَهَ إِلا أَنْتَ خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ أَ

 Bismillah-ir Rahman-ir Raheem [And they should consider that] when those who have been followed disassociate themselves from those who followed [them], and they [all] see the punishment, and cut off from them are the ties [of relationship]. Those who followed will say, "If only we had another turn [at worldly life] so we could disassociate ourselves from them as they have disassociated themselves from us." Thus will Allah show them their deeds as regrets upon them. And they are never to emerge from the Fire. (Surah Al-Baqarah, 166-167) Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) described the Qur’an as a guide to the straight path; and the beauty of the Qur’an is that each ayah (verse) is beautiful and so much so that you cannot differentiate between the beauty of two ayahs! In this khutba Shaykh Faraz Rabbani reminds us that the believers are not distinguished by living a worldly life, rather a believer lives with a higher reality and sense of purpose. Understanding the events that take place in this world are not for one to simply indulge in with worldly emotions. Rather they are a trial to see how one will deal with the trials and tribulations of this world. He goes on to remind us that what makes a Muslim community is believing in Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessing be upon him). Shaykh Faraz goes on to explain how believers respond to trials. In trials and tribulations there is a tremendous wisdom from Allah Most High. What Allah wants from believers during trials is to continue to turn to Him with a sense of need. Shaykh Faraz Rabbani explains and reflects on an aphorism by Imam al-Shadhili: "The truest of statements with Allah Most High, is there is no God but God (la ilaha illa Allah) upon purity. And the first of actions to be upon the love of Allah Most High is to hate worldliness, and to have no hope from the people of this world while being in conformity with them." “There has come to you from Allah a Light…” (Surah Al-Ma’idah, 15) Bismillah-ir Rahman-ir Raheem No one is exempt from the Mercy of Allah (subhana wa ta'ala)! “Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." (Surah Az-Zumar, 53) The reflection of His Mercy is His Nur – the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasalam) – who was not sent other than as a “Mercy to all the worlds.” (Surah Al-‘Anbiya, 107). And how can we reflect this Mercy? By sending Salawat (prayers and salutations) upon the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasalam)! “Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. In this Friday sermon, Shaykh Faraz reminds the believers the importance of connecting with the Qur'an, especially with the short verses and chapters that are oft recited. The Qur'an is a gift from Allah Most High for those who are mindful of Him. The entirety of the Qur'an contains guidance for all of creation.  Certain verses of the Qur'an are keys to guidance. The shorter chapters and verses are some keys which encapsulate meanings of the entire Qur'an. Shaykh Faraz goes on to remind the believers to constantly review the verses in the Qur'an that Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessing be upon him) recited in his prayer upon waking at night (Surat Aal Imran, verses 190-200). Shaykh Faraz explains what it means to "recite the Quran as it deserves to be recited". He tells us that the the Arabic word of reciting, tilawa, means to follow. Faith is also the greatest gift we can give to the modern world in which we live. As people move further and further away from belief, resulting in a state of agitation and a state of panic. Faith (iman) is related to security (amn). With faith one finds security in their Lord who absolutely sustains and takes care of everything from its beginning to its fruition.
