After millennia of promising a king would come, he finally appears, and it’s almost completely overlooked by the world. We should be known by our love. And that love is defined as a basin and towel of humble service, even to those who would deny us and betray us.He washed us clean of our guilt and shame. And we still deny Him. We still betray Him. Even so, He loves us like this. Let Him wash you. Let Him serve you. And then join Him in doing the same.And when we do? Just think of the impact we can have. Social historians point out this is one of the primary reasons the Christian movement grew in the first centuries. We actually loved like this. Across ethnic lines. Across socio-economic lines. Even towards our enemies. It is easy to become overwhelmed by options and choices. Sometimes we are paralyzed not wanting to commit to anything because we’re afraid something better might come along. But this is a recipe for deep unhappiness in life and in our relationships. When it comes to Jesus it can be tempting to keep our options open. But this passage pleads with us: Don’t say No to Jesus. THIS is the King we need. The fulfillment of Psalm72, and every earthly ruler. This One knows the needy. This One finds us precious. This One is with the needy now and forever. He is with us both now and forever.He actually knows what it’s like to be in need. Entering our world as a helpless baby. No less a King and yet still so vulnerable. For He sympathizes with our weakness. He longs to sit with us in them. And went to a cross to overcome them.Are you expecting your King to join you in your need? Not just fix it. Sometimes that’s not what’s best. The bible has often been called the “good book” for it indeed is that. It is the masterpiece of masterpieces.  But the good book can be misused for deceptive aims, abusive purposes and nefarious ends.  The bible can be wrongly taught to say what it does not say, to support deceptive plausibilities that perpetuate anything, but truth, goodness and beauty in the world, but rather legitimize abuse, domination, evil, and suffering. Our hearts break at this, but it is a sober reminder for us of the importance of teaching what the Holy Scripture actually teaches, of teaching the whole counsel of God and embracing the moral clarity it brings to our broken world.We are not our own. We belong to Jesus. Chances are good the majority of people don’t think they are engaged in “dishonest” work on a daily basis, but are you so sure? No one wants to live without love, but when God’s word calls us to walk in love as he is defined by love, there will come a point it will feel weird. Weird because God’s love doesn’t always match our current cultural understanding of love.
