Who's Who

It's time for another Doctor Who special, and this one is about as special as they get. What happens when you're running near the end of the Fifth Doctor's run, and want to do something special? Well, you call up the four previous doctors and ask all of them to join you for a blow-out special episode with a bunch of old friends and enemies, that's what you do! ... And then only three of them say yes, forcing you to splice in some extra footage from an un-aired episode, and ... well, it gets a little tricky, but it leaves us with a very good little movie! It's the nature of television series to have some good episodes and some bad episodes, with most episodes being of average-quality. Then there are those episodes that are just amazing in every way possible. This serial belongs to neither of these categories - it belongs to that fifth category of being absolutely dreadful, terrible, horrible and miserably bad. But hey; at least it's only two episodes. Four episodes of Doctor Who on a ... space ... boat. With pirates. And stuff. Look; I'm not going to say it's bad, because it absolutely wasn't, but there's just no reasonable way to describe this serial without making it sound at least a little bit weird.

Terminus is the fourth serial of the 20th season in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was originally broadcast in four twice-weekly parts from 15 to 23 February 1983. The serial was the second of three loosely connected serials known as the Black Guardian Trilogy, and marks the final regular appearance of Sarah Sutton as companion Nyssa. And while that's all very interesting, the most interesting thing about it is the big fat dog-face thing that walks around and cures people with radiation. I mean, you have to see it to believe it. Apparently, traveling to a different time and meeting yourself is a "Zap!"-kind of experience. Who'd have thunk it?

You know how the sequel is rarely better than the original movie? You go in with all of these expectations, just waiting to see your favorite characters again, doing more of the things that made you really love them in the first place? But then they just fail to do so and the magic spell is broken. Suddenly, you feel almost as if the first movie was somehow violated by the appearance of the sequel. No matter how great The Matrix was when it came out, the sequels just destroyed whatever love I had for the franchise. Well, Snakedance is not bad enough to kill our love for Kinda. We still think that's an amazing serial. But this is not great. It's good, don't get me wrong, but ... it's not great. Generally, a great serial is followed by a terrible serial, which is followed by a middling serial of passable quality. That's why, after Earthshock, nobody was surprised to see that Time-Flight was kind of pants. However, expecting Arc of Infinity to be a middle-of-the-road kind of episode that would leave no lasting impressions was a big mistake! It's that time again. I wish I was as good an editor as the person who made it, because this goes beyond lipstick on a pig-levels of improving things.

So ... We were kind of looking forward to this serial because it would allow us to get rid of Adric. Turns out we should have been looking forward to it because it's an absolutely amazing serial. Two episodes worth of a bottle story does not a happy Breki or Petter make. In fact, it's quite the contrary, this was a big disappointment to all of us. Shame, really. The fourth Doctor has left us and the fifth Doctor is here to stay. Petter and Breki sit down with some trepidation, wondering if this will be the moment when Doctor Who loses them and finds them looking for newer and better shows to watch.
