Cross Of Grace

God’s Word is both the blade that cuts, and the balm that heals. The words of the Bible are the very words of God, delivered and inspired by the Holy Spirit to the biblical writers. The Bible is truth because God is truth. It is trustworthy because God is trustworthy.

God wants to remind us who He is. He wants to get our eyes off of circumstances, off of deadlines, off of demands, of our own limitations and weakness, and He wants us to be reminded that HE is God – with limitless power, with boundless love, and immeasurable grace. When we remember, we will trust. And when we trust, we will follow.

Jesus reminds us that it’s in our weakness that we realize just how strong He is. He lived in obedience for you. He died to pay your debt. Through faith in Him your debt is wiped away. He hits the “reset button”. Old things have passed away – all things are new. That's just one of the wonderful promises of Christmas...

Israel was looking for a Messiah that was a military conqueror. Instead, God sent a better hero - the Suffering Servant. Jesus came to die, not only to suffer for our sin so that we would be forgiven, but also that we would have one who knows our suffering. The One who suffered for us, the One who conquered sin for us, the One who holds us in the grip of His grace, is also the One who will never let us go.

Almighty God opens the portals of time and space and shows Isaiah a glimpse of the promise fulfilled. The Son of God, born to us as a gift, one that would be given to God’s people, to rescue us, to shine a light into our darkness and give us hope and salvation.

As Christians, it’s not our responsibility to be the sin police of the world. It’s not my job to point out to my non-Christian neighbor that he’s not acting like Christ. Instead, God’s people should graciously, lovingly hold each other accountable. And when we are caught in sin, we serve one another. We don’t pounce. But in love, we patiently, graciously confront. Not because we’re better. But because we’re commanded to.

When we live in pride, we are not living in light of the gospel – whether that is jealousy, comparisons, rejection, divisions, or complaining. But the gospel dismantles our pride and grants us a transformed identity, anchoring who we are in Christ.

The gospel unifies us beyond our divisions, causing our allegiance to be rooted in Christ, not in man. We will have different levels of spiritual maturity, different opinions, and different convictions. But what we have in common is greater than what we don’t. And those who are in Christ must resist putting our affection or identity in anything that is not centered upon the gospel.

Scripture is not silent on the conscience. It is important for us as believers to understand what the conscience is, how it can possibly malfunction, and how we can have clean consciences before God.

God's plan of redemption was hidden for ages. But now, that mystery of the gospel is revealed by the Holy Spirit to those who belong to Him. The Apostle Paul points the church away from the empty wisdom of man and to this hidden wisdom of God revealed - Jesus the Messiah.

The Bible often refers to the church as God's flock, God's sheep, and He is our Shepherd. Paul was able to look at a messed up church like the one in Corinth, and give God thanks for them. Paul was able to do that because He saw them as God does, through eyes of grace. Unredeemed eyes can only see things as they are – broken and twisted. But eyes of grace see things and people the way God wants them to be. We begin to see beyond the natural, and we begin to trust what we cannot see – the transforming power of the gospel at work.

Sin divides the church, but the gospel unifies believers in Christ, causing us to live lives loving and serving one another. Like the church today, some of the churches of the New Testament struggled with living in the world, but not being of the world, to leave their old lifestyle and live as new creations. One simple verse - two sentences long summarize who Jesus is and what He has done. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, the Life. And He is the only way to the Father.

It’s easy to forget that we didn’t earn salvation. It’s easy to forget that we were not born good. God rescued us, not because of anything we did or could do. God rescued us because of his profound mercy. We should respond to God’s mercy by delighting in Him and giving mercy to others.
