Brené Brown: The Quest For True Belonging
25/08/2021 Duración: 01h40minI asked and you voted. And well, it's no surprise that the audience choice for best episode on the podcast over the last 10 years and 300 episodes is one of my favorite people in the world, Brené Brown. Brené is a vulnerability and empathy expert and has one of the most watched TED Talks of all time on the subject. She is the author of four New York Times bestselling books, one of which, Daring Greatly, has served as a crucial resource for my own creativity. Her book, Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone, is not only a tool for personal development, it's also a blueprint for communication at scale, especially in difficult conversations. We get into how loneliness is related to creativity, why artists have a unique ability to speak truth to bullshit, and setting boundaries without being a jerk. This stuff is critical to maximize the impact you have with your work, art, craft, etc. Brené's ability to stand alone didn't come easy, that was something she trained an

Public Failure, Money, and Craft
23/08/2021 Duración: 39minA while back I received an e-mail from a guy named Mike Ducille. It was an invitation to Mike's book club, which includes a number of other like-minded creators and entrepreneurs. Some topics we get into: Lessons learned from a failed app launch- what do you do after a major failure? I'm not talking about a little mis-step. How do you bounce back from a potentially career-stifling blow? The psychology of money (check out Ramit Sethi's book). Ramit is also launching a podcast to bolster the stuff he's already putting out in the world. Highly recommended checking it out, especially if you want to improve your mindset around money. Scaling a business by charging higher prices- time is a powerful tool. As you gain experience, connections and skill, you need to charge higher prices. What if you could sell your work for 10x more than you do now? The key here is finding the market and conveying value to the right person. Sending effective personal messages, collaborating with high profile folks, handling gue

How Art Creates Culture and Culture Creates Art with Ryan Abeo and Charles Mudede
11/08/2021 Duración: 02h17minRecently this show crossed over 300 episodes. Yes, that’s right 300 over the last 11 years. Wow. So in celebration, I wanted to do a little look back on the origins of the show, why we made specific decisions (such as why black & white) and what we've learned along the way. I also dug around in the archives looking at some of the earliest shows. Including this episode with my good friends Ryan Abeo (recording artist) and Charles Mudede (writer, director, cultural critic). 11 years later and this conversation is still insanely relevant. The topic is around hip-hop, but it's really about how art creates culture, and culture creates art. In a way, it was a good launch pad for what would be the next 11 years of the show. 300 episodes in and we aren't stopping anytime soon. Thank YOU for being a critical part of this journey. Sharing the content, writing reviews, asking thoughtful questions and joining the conversation. It would not be the show it is, without you. Onto the next 300

Why Clients Call You Back
09/08/2021 Duración: 15minFrom concept to final product, a master manages and calculates every aspect of their craft. The environment, the expectations, the communication throughout. The catch is, the only tried and true way to master something is to gain experience doing it the wrong way. So what do you do when it's not working out? In this episode, I respond to this very question from Rod covering topics such as the creative gap, performing in high-pressure situations, managing risk, and how to communicate with the client if expectations aren't aligning. Ultimately, how you handle these scenarios is why clients will (or will not) call you back. Enjoy! Have a question? 6 Things I do for a Happy, Productive Day
03/08/2021 Duración: 08minI believe that daily actions cultivate our mindset and, in turn, our mindset determines much about our lives; not only external things like success and fulfillment, but also how we handle adversity, mental/physical health, and more. Today's episode was part of the Chase Jarvis RAW series on YouTube where I share a number of things I do first thing in the morning that have a tremendously positive impact on my day. My goal isn’t to be prescriptive in this list, rather my aim is to tell you what I’VE come to know helps me crush…and be a better person. Do I miss some of these things every day? Absolutely. I’m so far from perfect with this stuff, it’s laughable, but the fact remains that I put a lot of effort into kicking off my day with these few things. Enjoy! Have a question? You Must Fail to Succeed
26/07/2021 Duración: 17min"Opportunities are like buses, there’s always another one coming.” -Richard Branson Be ready to catch the next bus. This episode is a reminder that failing is necessary in order to succeed. If we are only focused on what could have been, we fail to see opportunities that are right at our fingertips. In this episode I recount the experience building “Best Camera,” a photo sharing app that gained global publicity and over 1 million downloads. Today's story begins with a barrage of texts and emails, and I describe my mindset shortly after a new app called Instagram sold to Facebook for $1B, crushing Best Camera's trajectory. Failure could have defined this part of my story, but instead, I continued to innovate, ultimately discovering the path that led to found CreativeLive. So, if failing is inevitable, how can we fail better? Other topics in this episode include: Recurring thoughts of what could have been Resilience and grit Not chasing missed opportunities How to hear the word no and move on Talent emerg

Escalate & Evolve : A blueprint for career + life with Ben Uyeda
21/07/2021 Duración: 01h11minBen Uyeda stepped away from the award-winning architecture firm he co-founded, as well as an Ivy League teaching position, to develop media companies that deliver affordable designs to the masses. In the last four years, Ben’s design ideas have reached more than 50 million people and the free designs he gives away are being built on six different continents. Despite the populist and affordable nature of his work, Ben’s designs have been featured in an exhibition and workshop at the Vitra Furniture Museum in Germany. He shares many of his designs on his popular youtube channel, the Modern Maker, as well as his growing collaborations with brands to explore sustainable designs. This episode ranks as one of my my top 5 ever conversation. Why? Ben's articulation of the creative process, including: How and why to start with what you have? How to Stay Focused and Avoid Distractions
19/07/2021 Duración: 11minToday's episode is an audience question from Bobby, a creative asking about how to stay focused and finish projects. ADHD and mental health stuff aside, much of this question boils down to aligning goals, values and actions. What I mean by that is that if you say you are going to do something, do it. It might be uncomfortable, difficult or humbling, but once you get started, the angst of feeling stuck goes away, replaced by new sense of exploration and growth. The last thing you want is regret around your biggest passions. In this episode I share some of my thoughts to not only stay focused but finish projects. I get into a couple of my personal strategies to manage "fast mind" that comes up with a million ideas, and how having a few different simultaneous projects can actually help. Enjoy! Have a question? The Stories That Hold Us Back with Jon Acuff
14/07/2021 Duración: 01h10minYour thoughts aren't something you have, they're something you hone. It's a double-edged sword; optimistic, enthusiastic thinking compounds over time to create amazing things, while a multitude of mental woes can dampen our willingness to go bigger. Jon Acuff, author of Soundtracks: the surprising solution to overthinking and one of my favorite speakers, is on the podcast to give us a lesson on how to address negative, repetitive thoughts to steer us towards our goals and dreams rather than away from them. It's incredible what becomes possible when your mental energy is applied in the right direction. If not aware of Jon's work, he is the New York Times bestselling author of seven books, including his most recent Wall Street Journal #1 bestseller, Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done. He's an INC Magazine Top 100 Leadership speaker and has spoken to hundreds of thousands of people at conferences. I had the pleasure of seeing him on stage and he knocked me back with his unique blend of humor, honesty, and ho

Stop Trading Time for Money
12/07/2021 Duración: 13minPassion and curiosity drive the artist towards a craft that usually isn't the most lucrative. Early on, we jump on any opportunity to make money. But quickly, reality sets in. Bills, taxes, medical costs, equipment- it adds up fast, and we realize that we going to have to charge more. So how do we scale a creative business? In this episode I take a question from Fritz, a photographer working hourly, about how to do just that. To get you thinking before the show: What part of the business do you love? How can you build your business in a way that you do more of the things you love and bring on other people to support the areas that don't light you up as much? Finally, never underestimate the power of your brand. Today, you might not be able to charge the high rate you feel you deserve, but that doesn't mean you won't be able to a year or two from now. Taking smaller clients and hustling along the way does not make you are ineligible to land the Nike's and Apples of the world down the road. Focus on honing your

Poetry, Vulnerability and Finding Your Voice with Jericho Brown
08/07/2021 Duración: 01h16minIs it time to take the leap? Anyone you've admired, looked up to or emulated has, at some point, taken a necessary risk to move towards the living and life of their choice. Today, Pulitzer prize-winning poet Jericho Brown shares how he did just that, and the key to speaking truth through art. Jericho's advice for anyone beginning their journey struck me as profound, yet simple. What would a day look like if you were living your dream career/life/business? What you begin to realize is that there are things that you can do today, cost-free, to move towards that reality. "If you want to be a writer, then write for 5 minutes. Once you find 5 minutes, you can find 10, and 30, and once you are writing for 30 minutes a day you on your way," Jericho says. Jericho worked as a speechwriter for the Mayor of New Orleans before earning his PhD in Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Houston. The New York Times Book Review notes his most recent collection The Tradition: “In Brown’s poems, the body at risk

A portfolio is worth 1000 cold emails with Alec Cutter
05/07/2021 Duración: 50minCreativeLive student and filmmaker, Alec Cutter first came on my radar in 2016 during a live panel event in Seattle. After playing division one soccer at Gonzaga University, he moved to NYC with a dream to become a filmmaker, where he faced the classic chicken and egg dilemma. He needed a portfolio to get hired, but felt like getting hired was necessary to create a portfolio. Living on a friends couch, working multiple jobs, Alec used his spare time and income to create videos for cafes around Brooklyn. We get into the specifics around how those videos led to his full-time job in the industry and the path to his most recent project Nando, which was accepted into the Tribeca Film Festival. It isn't often that we host a CreativeLive student on the podcast, but Alec's willingness to take risks, put in the work and pursue stories and areas he's passionate about exemplifies the power of many philosophies and strategies we talk about here on the show. If you've ever doubted whether it's possible to succeed in going
