  • Things Photographers Spend Too Much Time Talking About

    12/04/2021 Duración: 01h33min

Recently I joined photographers Ben Von Wong and Tim Tadder, along with hosts Walid Azami and Mathieu Young on Clubhouse to chat about "Things Photographers Spend Too Much Time Talking About".  But this is not about photography widgets, lenses, and photo shoots. It's not even really specific to photography. This is about career choices. It's about following your heart. And of course - the title is tongue-in-cheek because it's actually about the stuff we don't talk about enough. Some things we get into: How to let go of goals that aren't serving us Short term vision vs long term vision Wandering off our path and how to listen to our intuition to weave back toward what we know we need to be doing The seasons of our careers and how to manage through the down cycles where we might not be firing on all cylinders So many good nuggets in this one. Please shoutout to @vonwong and @timtadder if you like what you hear. And if you're on clubhouse, follow me (@chasejarvis) and hopefully we can connect in a room

  • Escape the Portfolio

    22/03/2021 Duración: 10min

As a professional creative–or even an aspiring amateur–it’s standard protocol to have a portfolio. Whether it’s posted online or neatly bound in a black leather book bearing your name, or both, the portfolio is meant to be a cohesive sample of your work. But why is the thing so damned precious? Don’t get me wrong, I’m all in favor of having a portfolio. I understand it’s a core convention of creative professions and that it does the heavy lifting when it comes time to “get work”… But in recent times I’ve become increasingly disenchanted with the concept of “the” portfolio in our digital world and I’ve noticed–in myself and others–that the metaphysical weight alone of the word portfolio can crush the creative spirit rather than enhance it. • Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention with Erin Meyer

    17/03/2021 Duración: 58min

Back in 2009, Netflix Talent Officer Patty McCord and CEO Reed Hastings published a presentation called the "Netflix Culture Deck". This 125 page deck, now has over 20 Million views and created quite a buzz in the HR and tech world for its radical ideas that countered typical corporate culture such as vacation policy that equated to "take some", a "do what you think is best for the company" expense policy, and mindset that "adequate performance will get a generous severance." And that's where it started. Erin Meyer, my guest on today's show, read that deck and found herself startled, confused, and curious. There has never before been a company like Netflix. It has led nothing short of a revolution in the entertainment industries having to reinvent itself over and over again. How have these counterintuitive and radical management principles made such unprecedented flexibility possible? Erin is an author and a professor at INSEAD, one of the world's leading international business schools. I ran into her work se

  • Samantha Power on The Power of Idealism

    10/02/2021 Duración: 01h36min

Samantha Power started as an outsider, a war correspondent who wrote impassioned pieces for the Washington Post, Economist, and others about the failings of the American government on an international stage. That voice led to her Pulitzer Prize winning book “A Problem from Hell”: America and the Age of Genocide and earned her a job in the cabinet of President Barack Obama helping to shape the very policies she was once a harsh critic of. Samantha has served both on the National Security Council and as an Ambassador to the UN. Most recently she was nominated as USAID Administrator. She is also the author of the New York Times bestsellers Chasing the Flame: One Man’s Fight to Save the World and The Education of an Idealist: A Memoir, which is now in paperback and was named one of the best books of 2019 by the New York Times, Washington Post, Economist, Vanity Fair, National Public Radio, and TIME. They created a vision and worked toward achieving it. Every one of them started exactly where you are now—or even farther back. It’s time to put your work boots on and start kicking some ass.
