  • 045 – "Black Diamond Bay"

    10/02/2018 Duración: 01h17s

Sign on the Window is like that necktie and your Panama hat... it helps you look good in the face of utter destruction. Each week we listen to a random Bob Dylan song and this week, from 1976, "Black Diamond Bay." We talk context (5:45), the merits of traveling over staying in LA drinking a beer (12:00),the song itself (23:00, theories (30:00) and storytelling. We talk Conrad, Achebe, and Kendrick Lamar so buckle up. CONTEXT (5:45)“Black Diamond Bay” was recorded at Columbia Studios in New York City on July 29, 1975 in 12 takes, then on July 30 in 5. There is a connection to Joseph Conrad, namely the 1915 novel Victory, as Ian Bell notes:There is no hero, certainly no epic journey, least of all a spiritual rebirth. Instead, the song owes everything to Conrad’s use in Victory of doubled perspectives, physical and moral, and to the idea of fate, blind and mute, that permeates Blood on the Tracks. In ‘Black Diamond Bay’, good and evil contend; people sc

  • Mixed Up Confusion (The Cranberries)

    27/01/2018 Duración: 48min

The first Mixed Up Confusion of 2018 isn't one that we planned for or hoped to do. Dolores O'Riordan of The Cranberries passed away on January 15, 2018. Hugely influential in Kelly's life, we couldn't not talk about them. Perhaps it's best to note the times for the music we play for you to try to get the gist of how we approached our week of listening. We began with "Empty" (8:05), "Zombie" (12:45), "Copycat" (16:50), "Salvation" (26:00), "I Shot John Lennon" (28:30), "Dreams" (30:15), "Wake Up and Smell the Coffee" (35:00) and "Roses" (41:30). Sign on the Window is the Bob Dylan podcast that you need but maybe not the one you want. Every week we select a Bob Dylan song at random, live with it, then come back to talk about it. This week: "Sara" off 1976's Desire. Daniel and Kelly dive deep into Sara and Bob. She's one of those cornerstones on which Dylan, the singer-songwriter at least, rests and we've talked about her circuitously, so why not just dive in? We talk Sara, Bob, the lyrics, what constitutes a love song, and how DESIRE and Scarlet Rivera can seemingly never falter in Kelly's ears. As always, full show notes at our website.
