Christmas In The Heart 2017
25/12/2017 Duración: 59minHo ho ho! Merry Christmas from Sign on the Window! This Christmas, unwrap our (and your) newest tradition. We dive into Bob Dylan's 2009 Christmas in the Heart. In contrasting this deeply misunderstood record, we cast Dylan up against the heavyweights of North Pole karaoke bars: Gladys Knight and the Pips, Destiny's Child, Christina Aguilera, Dean Martin, Dolly Parton, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Nat King Cole - to name a few. Mixed Up Confusion (True Crime for "Hollis Brown")
17/12/2017 Duración: 35minSign on the Window presents... Truuuuuuuue Crime! Spooky! Because Hollis Brown committed the unspeakable (but singable) and we didn't have room, here's what Mixed Up Confusion was created to serve! Today we talk famous cases of familicide. We got the heavy hitters: Robert William Fisher, Bradford Bishop, Chris Benoit, Lizzy Borden. We got the historical: Abel Clemmons, Captain James Purrington, Thomas George Woolfolk. We got the early 20th century: George Hassell, Charlie Lawson. We got people too close to today that'll make you feel downright horrible. Daniel also becomes a newsie when he reads the headlines like Rosa Wurzer's from 1901: "KILLS HER SIX CHILDREN.; Crazed by Poverty, Woman Throws Them in a Well, Jumps In, and Deliberately Drowns Them." Or Edwin Stephens from 1905: "INSANE SHOTS END FAMILY. HORRIBLE TRAGEDY AT A ROSS VALLEY CHICKEN RANCH; Sickly Stephens Murders Wife and Three Children in Their Beds, Fatally Shoots Two Remaining Children, Fires at Milkman, Then Takes His Own Life." 039 - "Yea! Heavy and a Bottle of Bread"
04/12/2017 Duración: 47minSign on the Window is a weekly podcast where we randomly select a Bob Dylan song, listen to it for a week, then report back. This week, we listened to “Yea! Heavy and a Bottle of Bread” from the legendary Basement Tapes (our 4th of the season). We talk context, we talk bread and bread (6:15), we talk coded language and free-writing and the logistics of having one foot in reality and the other in a Dalí painting (20:00). Paul Williams described this as one of Dylan’s “most charming performances” and we’d have to agree. While we’d understand if this didn’t exist, we’re very happy it does exist! 037 - "Lenny Bruce"
13/11/2017 Duración: 01h01minThis week at Sign on the Window, we look at the intersection of Bob Dylan and Lenny Bruce and why this song showed up on Bob's 1981 Shot of Love (18:40). It's also a great excuse for us to delve into other rabbit holes! We talk Lenny Bruce (11:00) throughout and look at his Berkeley Concert, specifically (26:30), and the history of comedy, in general. In light of what's going on in the world, this one felt as vital to talk through as any other episode. As always, full show notes at our website.
