The goal or purpose for mankind is to be delighted in God and to live in His delight. To miss this goal is to sin, or to miss the mark. But sin is more than just doing "bad things", or things that "miss the mark". Sin also describes how we easily deceive ourselves and spin illusions to redefine our bad decisions as good ones. Shame is the residue from these illusions. Confession and repentance disempower shame and bring the lies we tell ourselves to the light of truth.
