Second Class Cinema: The B-movie Experience

For the second episode of Kid's Movie Month we had our friend Aaron come over with a movie and he brought the 2002 fantasy movie Max Magician and the Legend of the Rings!  Not only did he bring that but he also came with a very big secret to let us in on as well, as a matter of fact we all let everyone in on a personal secret. It's time to kick off Kid's Movie Month! YAAAAAAY!!!  To kick it off, Brittany picked the 1992 kid's comedy Stay Tuned.  Arguably not a b-movie but hey it wasn't profitable and not many people I've met have actually watched it so fudge off.  We change it up this month and focus on 2 main questions;  was the movie successful for kids at the time, and then would it be successful for kids today? On this week's episode we discuss Erik's selection, the 1988 action movie Counterforce!  Listen on as we're both confused and bewildered with this movie's motivations, plot, characters, and whatever the hell else is even in a movie.

In this episode Tom picked the 1978 blaxploitation revenge film Death Force. AKA Vengeance is Mine. Alternate title: Fighting Mad. Ratings were all over the place and almost entirely ruined by one specific moment of the movie. If you've seen this film you might know what it is. All of that and more as we discuss successes, failures and risks of this samurai vengeance story!

On this week's episode, Brittany selects the 1977 killer bed classic Death Bed: The Bed That Eats! I think the only way to truly understand it's meaning is to indulge in as many drugs as the creators of this film did. Find out what our ratings are of this absurd 70's horror movie about a bed eating people.

This week is Erik picked the 1995 Jean-Claude Van Damme movie Sudden Death. �Erik chose this movie purely based on it's "second class stakes", a fireman must save the Vice President held hostage at the Stanley Cup by a bunch of mean guys. Sure sounds second class to us. This is by far our longest episode yet and we're not quite sure why.

Tom selects this week's topic of discussion with a movie from his childhood, 1993's Only The Strong starring none other than Mark Dacascos.  We find out that capoeira is a pretty cool thing to watch, or at least we hear Tom defend this movie due to his bias growing up with it. Either way we still cover it's successes, failures and enjoy a nice ratings session. We also have first time guest Tyler on to help us break this movie down.

Brittany's selection this week was the fresh 2015 release, WolfCop! Sounds easy right? A wolf that's a cop. This movie's name alone set up expectations it just couldn't quite live up to. See if our ratings and reactions were anything like yours as we break down the successes, failures and risks of this werewolf-comedy, cop romp. 

As a group we decided enough was enough and we were going to see something new to review for once, so we ventured out to see teen cyber-thriller Unfriended. After seeing the trailer before It Follows, it seemed like it was going to be at least a semi-good time. Was it?  How do you think it measured up during our Fucking Ratings?

In correlation with the new Mortal Kombat coming out, Erik selected the 1995 virtual reality action movie Expect No Mercy with Tae Bo's own Billy Blanks. Favorite parts aplenty and a truly surprising rating.

Successes, failures, favorite parts, ratings, ALL of these happen on Tom's selection this week. We watched the 1984 Filipino, action/martial arts movie, Death Raiders off of the Mercs DVD pack put out by VideoAsia. Special guest Aaron helps us put this movie in perspective and after some tequila, we definitely needed it. 

Brittany's selection, Bitter Feast is a 2010 movie in which a celebrity chef captures a food blogger and tortures him whilst also making him perform food challenges.  Obviously we watched this one, but the outcome was quite surprising.  

So Erik selected th 1991 football-action, extraction movie, The Last Match.  The quarterback of a football team's daughter gets imprisoned somewhere in South America so he collects all of his macho football player friends to go and save her.  It's not as cool as it sounds, trust us.

You read correctly, it's our very first DOUBLE FEATURE!  First we watched Zipperface, a 1992 hooker slasher(?) movie.  We then were able to watch a movie submitted to us on Facebook, Penitentiary 3.  These movies made for an interesting discussion.  

Brittany's selection this week was the 1984 track and field slasher Fatal Games!  We always thought javelins looked dangerous and this movie proves it.

Fresh out of Cult Month, Erik picks the 1991 Action-Comedy Dollman.  Brought to us by Full Moon Entertainment; this movie was not the movie we thought it was going to be when we started but we're sure glad we were wrong.  Second time guest Brian assists us in reviewing this one.

We wrap up Cult Month with the 80's classic Gymkata!  Aaron comes through again and brings this gem with him on DVD. Things will now go back to normal in March where we settle back in to our regular routine.

Brittany chose the movie this week and she picked 1996's Freeway for her Cult Month selection.  This is probably the closest we've come so far to watching something with actual substance.  First time guest Jimmy is on to help us recap this mid-90's gem.

Not only is it Cult Month here on SCC, we are graced with a Friday the 13th. This made our next selection very easy.  On our Friday the 13th Special we cover the fifth in the series, 1985's A New Beginning with first time guest Brandon.
