The Bible, like many of the world’s scriptures, is very critical of unjust economics and many of the hard sentiments at play in our Western systems. God(dess) often demands that we uplift the downtrodden and broken, relinquishing our worldly riches and hoardes of gold for the betterment of humanity as part of how we interact in commerce and community. Unfortunately, today we often give lip-service to God the Christ (“the One who Saves”) while actively embodying the opposite of his radical economics. The Divine Savior at the heart of all of our traditions puts value on the greatest capital of all: our labor, leisure & intellectual capital, and even more so on the point of economics itself, saving and uplifting lives. Many traditions, as well as the words of Christ, tell us that we should allow our lights to shine while shedding the hurtful constructs that can dampen it. What does this mean spiritually? It can be especially confusing when held in the light of our call to humility. However, as we'll see, combining this idea with Christ's and others' invitation to become like spiritual children can bring powerful insight into how these truths might empower our lives toward greater peace, play, and goodness. The church wants to be here for its members from cradle to grave. What other organization can say the same? This is not just a matter of survival. I recall a remark by a member of an exceptionally well-endowed church: "This church could keep going even if it didn't have any members." That would be survival of everything but the church. I'm starting to think of the ideal church as a kind of support group. Support groups form spontaneously, serving people who are facing or have faced some particular trying experience-bereavement, divorce, or cancer, for example. The only requirements for membership are shared experience and a recognition of the need of help in dealing with it well.

We explore what it means to pursue true happiness and how that leads us to find Divinity empowering us toward social justice within and around us. None of us are perfect, there’s always room to grow - indeed, we’re told that all have fallen short of the glory of God in all things. Despite this we tend to harshly judge ourselves and others, carrying the voice of our childhood critics, harsh rule-setters, and bullies as our own and often not giving it a second thought. The woman at the well is often criticized as living a blatantly sinful (meaning "missed-the-mark") life - but are we any different? Who’s to say our anger, lust, judgment, anxiety and on (and on) aren’t similar states - distancing us from peace and love? Even so, the Lord tells us that we are at a well with the very source of living water offering us a drink of transformation! Sometimes I get caught up in some of the trappings of the rat-race, I confess. I think we all do. It’s easy to care about riches and our beauty and togetherness for shallow reasons; for our image with our friends and strangers, on social media, at work, for our dating life, and on. We often want these things to feed our ego and to feel a somewhat hollow comfort. We can want the dressings of extravagance and wealth for its prestige and perceived safety in spite of its impact on others, and in today’s world we can easily feel encouraged in that. And yet, what we know about ourselves from studies and what God(dess) tells us encourages quite the opposite: true health, richness, within and without for ourselves and for others.
