The old-school kitchen ritual is fast-becoming a new trend in seasonal harvesting.     Students at Norfolk's P.B. Young elementary are three weeks into a unique new summer program aimed at fending off the "brain drain" that students usually experience over the summer. On today's Hearsay we'll speak with P.B. Young Sr. Elementary Principal Alana Balthazar for a look at the Young Knights Program's approach to helping young students retain the knowledge that is often lost over summer break. We'll also check with other free summer learning opportunites across Hampton Roads.

  • Furloughs: 10 Days to Go

    As of this Monday, the work-weeks and paychecks for over 600,000 civilian defense department employees just got smaller. The first of 11 furloughed work days began this week, impacting upwards of 40,000 of the region's workforce. The individual lost wages average out to $1,000 a month, and our local economy may feel the pinch right alongside Hampton Roads' workers. We'll consider sequestration's aftermath on today's HearSay and look ahead to the broad impact of ten weeks of furloughs.

  • Gay Marriage Vows: The Right & The Fight

    June 26 was a historic day for same-sex rights in the United States. The U.S. Supreme Court gave the nation's legally married gay couples equal federal footing with all other married Americans by striking down the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). The high court also cleared the way for same-sex marriages to resume in California by dismissing that state's Proposition 8 Amendment that banned gay marriage. On this edition of HearSay with Cathy Lewis, a panel of guests throughout the hour will discuss the impact of the rulings on the LGBT community and what's next for same-sex rights in Virginia and in the United States.

    Over a year ago, Norfolk Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Samuel King was hired to revitalize a division that was once seen as a model of urban education but has experienced a sharp downturn in student performance. A newly revealed component of his plans to revitalize Norfolk's public schools involves the conversion of 10 of the district's 46 schools into public charters with focused themes that would change both the school calendar and the way curriculums are taught. Cathy Lewis speaks with leadership from Norfolk Public Schools about the bold plan to change the way Norfolk students learn.
