Maternal Mortality
04/02/2013Fans of PBS Masterpiece Theater's Downton Abbey might still be in a state of shock and disbelief after last week's episode, in which beloved Lady Sybil Crawley gave birth and then died from "eclampsia." What might be even more shocking is that, despite advances in modern healthcare and birthing procedures, the maternal mortality rate for women in the U.S. has doubled in the last 25 years. On today's HearSay, host Cathy Lewis considers an issue as old as childbirth itself and speak with public health and maternity experts about what can be done to prevent the death of mothers at childbirth.

However a less than glowing report on the Commonwealth's capacity to handle a large scale evacuation might give many Hampton Roads residents pause when making preparations for this year's hurricane season. On today's HearSay, we'll consider the report's findings, analyze the logistics of a large-scale evacuation, and discuss how local low-lying cities are preparing for the worst.
