Hunting: A Sport of the Past?
18/07/2012For generations, most young Virginia males came of age in the woods hunting deer and other animals; killing your first buck or skinning your first rabbit was a rite of passage. But interest in hunting has been declining in our state for the past two decades as farmland becomes scare and young people choose indoor gaming over the real thing. On this special encore edition of HearSay, we bring you one of our programs that took home "Best Human Interest Series" at this year's Virginia Association of Broadcasters awards. The program originally aired in March 2011. Host Cathy Lewis talks with hunting enthusiasts about the legacy of their sport and its possible future.

Juvenile Jail: A system in need of change?
10/07/2012Thousands of juveniles are held in correctional centers throughout the state, awaiting trial or serving their sentences. A recent report by the Annie E. Casey Foundation argues that these types of detention centers are ineffective in rehabilitating youths and costly to taxpayers. On this encore edition of HearSay, host Cathy Lewis talks with experts and advocates working in the juvenile jail system about the report and take a look at ways local communities can serve at-risk children. Indigent Care and Medicaid for the Masses
20/06/2012In the coming days the supreme court of the United States will reach a decision on the constitutionality of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care act. The individual mandate portion of the act has sparked the greatest nationwide controversy but it is the fate of expanded Medicaid that has indigent care providers and advocates across the commonwealth holding their breath. Host Cathy Lewis speaks with these groups about the roles they play in caring, and providing for Virginia's indigent population and what effect the Supreme Court's ruling will have on their ability to do so effectively.

18/06/2012Segment A: Racial Identity A key subset of both individual and collective identity is one of racial and ethnic identification. These constructs, for Americans in particular, are continuously growing more complex and difficult to frame. On today's HearSay, Cathy Lewis will speak with a local scholar who's examining the complex interplay of cultural and racial identities in our modern society. Segment B: HUSCRI Over the next 30 years, Africans Americans, Asians, Native Americans and Hispanics will represent more than half of the U.S. population. Despite this trend, minimal time and medical resources have been devoted to explore the structural, clinical and functional properties of skin of color. The Hampton University Skin of Color Research Institute (HUSCRI) has made it their mission to explore these dermatolocial intricacies and join us on HearSay to speak about their efforts.
