Habitat for Humanity is fighting to change that by uniting donors, builders and volunteers across all of Hampton Roads. 07/06/2012Segment A: Songs of Virginia Virginia has a rich and intricate history, marked with tales of triumph and tragedy, conflict and compromise. Music and song have long been a means for sharing these stories with younger generations, and today on HearSay Cathy Lewis will include our listeners in this rich oral tradition. You'll hear the rousing sounds of fife and drums and haunting ballads as Virginia historians share the stories and songs that bring our Commonwealth's history to life. Segment B: Pa's Fiddle: Dean Butler In this segment, we'll talk with actor, producer Dean Butler. Butler starred as Almanzo Wilder in the TV series "Little House on the Prairie" and has co-produced the PBS special, "Pa's Fiddle." Laura Ingalls Wilder's father, Charles, would play the fiddle for his family when she was growing up, and that music inspired the narrative for her novels based on her life in Minnesota in the late 1800's. Teen HIV/Aids Prevention
06/06/2012As the old adage goes, "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." In the case of HIV/AIDS, prevention remains the most effective means of halting this incurable disease's propagation. Dr. John Chittick has made it his life's work to educate youth across the globe about the dangers of HIV/AIDS, empowering them with this message: "You have the power to save your best friends' lives from HIV/AIDS." 04/06/2012On June 12th, voters across Virginia will head to the polls for the Primary Election that precedes the November 6th General Election. Cathy Lewis will be joined by political experts to discuss how Virginia's use of an "open primary system" could impact the election. We'll also examine what the future holds for House and Senate hopefuls and take a look at Virginia's redrawn congressional map and discuss its implications.

Aquatic Diversity
29/05/2012Memorial Day weekend signals the start of swimming pool season. For many children however, easy access to a beach or swimming pool is not a given. This limited access also hinders opportunities for swim lessons and other water and pool safety education. According to the USA Swimming Foundation this is especially true for African-American and Hispanic children, 70% of whom do not know how to swim. HearSay host Cathy Lewis will be joined by local and national educators and activists who are taking steps to provide children of all races and circumstances the opportunity to safely enjoy the water this summer.

State Integrity Investigation
16/05/2012In a country-wide investigation into each state's vulnerability to corruption, Virginia ranked in the bottom four. The State Integrity Investigation, a joint project by The Center for Public Integrity and Public Radio International, cited issues such as "public access to information," "lobbying disclosure," and "judicial accountability" as a few of the deciding factors in the Commonwealth's failing grade. We're joined on HearSay by a member of the investigation and Virginia experts who will explore what implications the results hold for the upcoming elections.
