The faithful of today can be encouraged by the faithful of the past. Paul commends the obedience of those at the Church of Rome but also warns them to watch out for those who would seek to do harm. We make plans for many different things, and what those plans are determines our steps towards them. Paul's aim was to share the Gospel with the Gentiles and for them to be presented to God as an offering, holy and acceptable to God. Rather, believers must be a stepping stone, which leads to peace and mutual upbuilding. We can show the world a clear picture of Christ by being considerate of others, convinced in our own minds, and consistent in our actions. The Apostle Paul tells us that we are, "All being transformed to the same image from one degree of glory to another." Inherent in these varying degrees is a differential level of understanding of the gospel and the freedom that we have in Christ. Every believer is called to love one another, and subject themselves to governing authorities, which displays love and love their neighbor as themselves. In order for this love to be known, it must be done in the light for all that is done in darkness is done in conflict with God's law. As we are told to cast off the works of darkness and walk decently in the light, we are reminded that the time of Christ's return is near, and all that is done in darkness will be brought into the light. In a world where it can be increasingly difficult to subject ourselves to a governing authority, the Apostle Paul not only commands this for believers, but also tells us how, why, and what that governing authority is there for in the first place; and how we are to respond to it. Paul's message today reflects Jesus' words from the Sermon on the Mount. As ministers of reconciliation, we are to be peacemakers, keeping short accounts with one another.
