As research in inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) advances, the landscape is rapidly evolving; requiring reinforcement of the most important and clinically relevant data. This educational series will provide the latest information on research, treatments, and management of IBD with a focus on the most pressing and relevant topics identified by the Crohns & Colitis Foundation's National Scientific Advisory Committee on Crohns Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.With 1.6 million Americans living with IBD, which includes Crohns disease and ulcerative colitis, and approximately 70,000 new cases diagnosed annually, the Crohns & Colitis Foundation is dedicated to developing and cultivating IBD healthcare providers through continued education and creation of valuable resources that directly impact the standard-of-care and everyday clinical practices in IBD.The Crohns & Colitis Foundation is the only national organization dedicated to driving efforts in IBD research, education and support for patients, caregivers, and professionals. MD Background: To describe the patterns and predictors of emergency department (ED) attendance and post-ED hospitalization by persons with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Methods: We linked the University of Manitoba IBD Epidemiology Database with the Emergency Department Information System of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority to determine the rates of presentation to the ED by persons with IBD from January 01, 2009 to March 31, 2012. Incident cases were diagnosed during the study period and all others were considered prevalent cases. Multivariate logistic regression was used to determine predictors of attendance in the ED and for hospitalization within 2 days of ED attendance.
