  • #79: Mikah Meyer -- Roadtrip to All 417 National Parks Managed Sites

    01/02/2018 Duración: 01h13min

Mikah Meyer is on a journey of a lifetime. He's taking on a road trip that is bringing him to all corners of the country and he is checking off all of the 417 National Parks managed sites along the way. As he's traveled over the last few years his project has transformed as he's discovered a bigger purpose; increasing the LGBT inclusion in the outdoor industry. Mikah's story is beyond inspiring. Through his father's passing, he learned that "Tomorrow is not guaranteed; only today is. So take to the road and experience your dream journeys--now. Life is too short to wait." In this episode we mainly focus on the emotional origin of his journey, why road trips are transformative and how they can begin the healing process? Mikah also shares what this has taught him about our country, what are the NPS sites beyond just the 59 National Parks, which ones have been his favorite so far, the highs and lows of such an epic quest, and his philosophy of incorporating a "retirement year" into every 5 years of your lif

  • #78: Candice Burt 2 -- Hurt 100 Recap, Race Director of Moab 240

    26/01/2018 Duración: 01h11min

Super stoked this week to catch up with one of my favorite returning guests Candice Burt!! Candice is the race director of a few teeny tiny events......oh wait, she puts together extremely mind boggling 200 mile races??.....excuse me, did you say TWO HUNDRED FREAKING MILE RACES!! Through her company Destination Trails she has established the Tahoe 200, Bigfoot 200, and the Moab 240 as some of the most exciting events in the ultrarunning community. These races are quickly rising in their popularity and have completely captured my imagination. The adventures, insane obstacles, beautiful views, brief touches with insanity each participant must go through over the course of 4 days in the wilderness has to be simply amazing! On top of her hours and hours of exploring, route finding, and organizing these events, Candice also finds time to be a highly accomplished ultra runner. Previously she has kicked some serious butt at events like Zion ultras, Cascade Crest, and multiple trips to the HURT 100. In this ep

  • #77: Drake Kulick -- Iowa Hawkeye Starting Fullback, Walk On to Game Winning TD

    18/01/2018 Duración: 49min

On this week's show we are sharing the story of University of Iowa Hawkeye Fullback Drake Kulick. In my opinion, Drake represents everything that I enjoy about Football: Hard work, embracing the journey and the speed bumps along the way, consistent improvement and the development of a leader. His journey as a Hawkeye started as a walk-on and ended as a team leader a game winning touchdown. It doesn't get any better than that! I really hope you enjoy this episode with Drake as much as I enjoyed recording it. We wish him nothing but the absolute best as he steps out of the world of college football and into the intense process of getting on an NFL squad. Good luck man! If you guys enjoyed this episode, be sure to check out some of our previous guests on iTunes, Soundcloud, or wherever you listen to podcasts. • #76: Chad Spring -- Barkley Fall Classic, Never Summer 100k, Ultra Spartans

    12/01/2018 Duración: 01h09min

This week's episode is with athlete Chad Spring. Chad has competed in a variety of races around the country over the last few years. Recently he's taken on Ultra Spartan Races and various ultra marathons including the Never Summer 100k in Colorado and the Barkley Fall Classic in Tennessee. I met Chad on a run a year ago and last weekend he invited me to join him for part of his extra badass Saturday Spartan Race training which consisted of 19ish miles of powering up steep trails by his house and 2 miles of carrying an 80lb bucket of sand. It was .....insane. After joining him for part of the workout I sat down with Chad and chatted about all things Barkley Marathons (one of the most difficult races in the world) and 50k, preparation and balancing training with life, Ultra Spartan Races, and his experience competing in the Never Summer 100k (a race I'm tossing around as a potential 2018 goal race). I hope you guys enjoy this episode! Definitely check out the Barkley Marathons documentary on Netflix, it r

  • #75: Hayden Hawks -- Running 100 Miles Through Bears Ears National Monument

    05/01/2018 Duración: 01h03min

(Cover Photo by Derrick Lytle https://www.instagram.com/derricklytle/) This week we welcome elite ultra runner, Hoka athlete, and all around nice guy Hayden Hawks to the Like a Bigfoot Podcast! Hayden has a list of insane ultrarunning accomplishments. Everything from winning Speedboat 50k to a first place finish 100k at CCC in Chamonix. Most recently he accomplished something that completely captured my imagination- Hayden, his brother, and a friend explored 100 miles in Utah's Bears Ears National Monument. Bears Ears is an amazing National Monument in Southeastern Utah. Its diverse beauty makes it truly a special place. Recently, Bears Ears has been in the public eye due to President Obama designating it a National Monument in late 2016 and President Trump almost immediately reducing its size by 85%. Hayden wanted to experience this area for himself. Using his ultrarunning talents, he completely threw himself into the vast wilderness of the monument, running through deep untamed canyons, exploring b

  • #74: Matthew Marrero --Mojo's Adventures on the Appalachian Trail

    29/12/2017 Duración: 01h11min

Week two of Appalachian Trail adventures on the Like a Bigfoot Podcast!! This week we are joined by Matt Marrero, trail name "Mojo", a southbound hiker who recently completed his journey on the Appalachian Trail. Last year he finished college and almost immediately traveled up to Mt. Katahdin in Maine and started walking. Over 5 and a half months, he experienced all the joy, freedom, pain, understanding, struggle and accomplishment that the trail brings. A real life-changing experience! Matt loves chatting about his time on the AT and I really enjoyed hearing his tales about his many adventures on the trail. In this episode we chat about what really inspired him to take on this quest, the biggest meal of his whole entire life, the beauty of trail angels, awesome trail nicknames, how he handled the challenging moments, what the trail taught him about himself and what he plans on doing in the future. Also what inspired him and some friends to take on a brutal 28 mile day??? SPOILER ALERT: It rhymes

  • #73: "The Blackalachian" Daniel White --Stepping Onto His Own Path and Hiking the AT

    22/12/2017 Duración: 01h38s

Huge thank you to "The Blackalachian" Daniel White for joining me on the show this week! A year ago Daniel was keeping his life busy, grinding away at a job he wasn't passionate about. Doing the same thing day after day, until a cousin suggested he do something completely insane. Hike the Appalachian Trail. Walk through the mountains all the way from Georgia to Maine. Daniel was in. I'm so inspired by his story because he went from a complete newbie and took the hardest step- just starting. Growing up, hiking and camping wasn't the norm in his community. Before his hike he had never slept out in the woods or climbed a mountain. But he wanted to challenge his own status quo. There are so many aspects of his story that define bravery: saying you are going to finish something and letting absolutely nothing stop you, being flexible and learning on the fly, accepting adversity and maintaining joy, and setting off the normal path of life to forge your own way! In this episode Daniel shares his story. Wh

  • #72: Calvin Johannsen 3 -- How to Successfully Accomplish Goals this New Year

    15/12/2017 Duración: 01h24min

I'm a self-admitted gigantic Calvin Johannsen fan and am so happy to call him one of my best friends. I am even happier to have him back on the show for an unprecedented THIRD episode! In fact, our friendship is one of the main reasons I started this podcast. I'm incredibly lucky to have such an inspiring person in my life and when I started the show Calvin was in the midst of his 14ers Project (100 mountains in 100 days) I really wanted to share his story and, selfishly, I also wanted to record some of our conversations. The joke has always been that Calvin should be a motivational speaker named "Calspirations" and I wanted an excuse to store and revisit some of our chats! He's become one of the most successful people using intention, clear vision, and willingness to put in the consistent work. He's very analytical and driven to push himself towards constant momentum on any goals! In this episode we go through Calvin's goal setting process, how he reflects on previous goals, and how he builds intenti

  • #71: Ryan Esdohr 2 -- Inside the Lab, Mindset, Ballet, Jiu Jitsu

    08/12/2017 Duración: 01h15min

On this week's Like a Bigfoot Podcast we catch up with "Superhuman Lab" owner, Like a Bigfoot podcast Yoda, and all around awesome guy Ryan Esdohr. The thing I absolutely admire about Ryan is his curiosity. Through his work with movement, mobility and recovery in Superhuman Lab, his podcast "Inside the Lab" and his quest for self improvement, Ryan has explored an incredible amount of athletics, meditation and optimization. In this episode we chat about everything from successful communication to what to expect from your first Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class to why he signed up for ballet lessons as a grown man. Ryan is awesome and I love being able to learn from him. Hope you are able to turn some of his ideas into motivation for achieving your own success! Also, be sure to check out his wonderful podcast "Inside the Lab" where he and his business partner Matt explore all areas of movement, mobility and recovery as it applies to athletics. • #70: Jimmy Funkhouser -- Starting Feral Mountain Co, "Year Without Fear"

    30/11/2017 Duración: 01h08min

How would you live your life if you had absolutely no fear holding you back? This week's Like a Bigfoot Podcast is a sit down conversation with the owner of Feral Mountain Co. Jimmy Funkhouser. Feral is my absolute favorite outdoor shop in Denver and Jimmy's story is incredibly energizing. On New Year's Eve 2016, Jimmy committed to living a "Year Without Fear". He promptly quit his corporate job of 10 years and within three months Feral was up and running. Feral is a unique store. It's very community driven with everything supporting Jimmy's mission of connecting people to wild places. Outdoor adventures have had such a positive impact on his life, his passion is to "create adventure" all through his community. So Feral has become much more than a shop. There are outdoor movie nights, organized group hikes, 14er climbs, and even a couple hammocks to relax in out front. He's forged a very inviting community encouraging everyone to get outside and explore. In this episode Jimmy shares the challenges

  • #69: Eszter Horanyi --Ouray 100, Bikepacking, Life of Adventure

    24/11/2017 Duración: 01h05min

Happy Thanksgiving guys!! As promised we have an awesome episode of the podcast for you this week. Eszter Horanyi is an adventure athlete who spends her time exploring the public lands of the west. You can find her mountain biking, running, scrambling, camping and hanging in her scamp trailer with her boyfriend and previous Like a Bigfoot podcast guest Scott Morris. She has embraced the explorer lifestyle and through her experiences wants to inspire others to fall in love with the wild lands of the U.S. In this episode we discuss a little race called the Ouray 100 in which Eszter finished 2nd in only her third trail race EVER...which blows my mind! We also discuss all things mountain biking as her life journey morphed her from a collegiate road cyclist to a badass mountain biker. We're sure to hit on bikepacking and all the extremely challenging endurance bike races she's taken on. I hope you guys enjoy this episode! The plan is that Eszter will inspire you to kick butt during your post Thanksgiving wo

  • #68: Kuntal Joisher -- Discovering Your Life's Mission, Journey to Summit Everest

    17/11/2017 Duración: 01h36min

In 2016, Kuntal Joisher was the first documented vegan to stand on the top of the world. Mount Everest was a culmination of a journey built around the discovery of his life's mission and bravery to step outside the norm to pursue something spectacular. Having never been an athlete and weighing upwards of 240 pounds, Kuntal defied his sedentary lifestyle, fell in love with the Himalayas and started to go after one of the most insanely difficult adventures; the summit of Everest. His story is energizing, exhilarating, and will move you to "find your Everest"- a worthwhile cause that drives your life in meaning and purpose. In this episode Kuntal shares the importance of discovering your life's purpose and how it leads to growth and success, his Everest journey and how he persevered through three separate trips wrought with hardships and tragedy, the emotions that come with finally accomplishing your life's goal and many other lessons he has learned along the way. He's an amazing story teller and I could ho

  • #67: Justin Horneker -- Running Coach for Anthrophysique

    10/11/2017 Duración: 57min

Very excited this week to share with you this episode of the Like a Bigfoot Podcast with Anthrophysique running coach Justin Horneker. Over the last month the theme of the show has been exploring the ideas of "expanding our capacity for success" and "transforming inspiration into action." This conversation with Justin is really intentional around these two ideas. I feel like there are a few huge barriers to success: #1. No accountability #2. No Vision or Roadmap #3. No knowledgeable person to bounce ideas off of For those of us pursuing running, a great option for minimizing these obstacles is hiring a coach. Someone like Justin who's job is to take part in discussions, help set goals, hold you accountable, and really push you to achieve beyond your perceptions. That's why I'm pumped to share this convo! Justin is extremely knowledgeable about all things running and is able to discuss at length the physical demands, the mental challenges and the emotional needs of hi

  • #66: Natalie Larson 2 -- California Coastal Trail Fastest Known Time

    03/11/2017 Duración: 01h20min

In August Natalie Larson caught an Uber to the Mexican border and set out on the biggest adventure of her life. 44 days 18 hours 40 minutes and 1,171 miles later, she had traversed the entirety of the Californian coast. Along the way she survived encounters with mountain lions, swam across rivers, and discovered the kindness of strangers. Natalie's journey really encapsulates all I respect and love about adventure. Here's a bit of the intro to her fantastic blog about the experience (link below): "I saw headlamps from afar that led me to water in the middle of the night. I found a woman's purse complete with driver's license, credit cards, sunglasses, from the 70s. I found my way out of a sandstorm on fifty-foot high dunes, scared away a mountain lion by screaming at the top of my lungs, climbed over slippery rocks, raced along the beach to beat the incoming tide, escaped the grasp of a farm worker who grabbed my arm, swam across a river carrying my gear on my head (twice), followed footprints when I cou

  • #64: Scott Stark 2 --Mountain RATS Ultramarathon, His First 50k!

    23/10/2017 Duración: 01h04min

About a month ago, Scott Stark and I ran the Mountain RATS 50k in Eagle, CO. What started as a beautiful crisp fall morning transformed into a stormy downpour. The second half of the race gut checked us and really tested our ability to withstand the discomfort of being cold, wet, fatigued, sore, and exhausted. The craziest thing- it was Scott's first ultra marathon (having only ran a half marathon previously) AND HE SIGNED UP 6 DAYS BEFORE THE RACE! In this episode, Scott and I nerd about all things mountains, Colorado, and trail running before heading into our race report. Scott was on a previous episode about "Climbing Your First 14er" in which he shared a lot of knowledge about mountain climbing, but we didn't really get the chance to dig into his backstory. So I'm pumped for you to get to know this awesome dude! We cover a bunch of different topics in our chat: What skills do you need to take on the 50k distance? How do you build grit, tenacity, and resilience to help you stubbornly push forward?

I'm happy to say that last Saturday he reached his goal by finishing the Pilot Mountain to Hanging Rock 50k in North Carolina!! In this episode Jason shares his race report and really gives us the perspective of what a mountain trail run is like from a first timer. Over the next few episodes we are really hoping that you realize that YOU can step up to take on a 50k while also giving you a realistic view of the hard work and effort that goes into these events. • #62: "Antarctic Gurkha" Scott Sears -- Youngest Unsupported Journey to the South Pole

    12/10/2017 Duración: 01h14min

I'm so ridiculously excited for this episode! In a few short weeks, the "Antarctic Gurkha" Scott Sears flies down to the most desolate place in the world for an expedition where he will attempt to become the youngest person to reach the South Pole "alone, unsupported, and unassisted." To accomplish this Herculean feat, Scott must drag a 200lb sled 683 miles in some of the most extreme weather imaginable, across crevasses, through white outs, and over the brutal Sastrugi (waves of solid snow). Powering through day after day after day completely alone, driven by nothing but his own internal badassness. Journeying to the South Pole ignites a vision of supreme human endurance and provokes journeys of extreme adversity, tragedy and triumph. It is the epitome of the much-overused term EPIC. A true adventure. In this episode, Scott shares his preparations, expectations, and mentality while planning for and training for his expedition. How has his life's journey prepared him to take on this challenge? How wi

  • #60: Josh LaJaunie -- Losing Over 200 Pounds and Becoming a Vegan Ultrarunner

    28/09/2017 Duración: 01h11min

This week's episode is for everyone who feel stuck in life. Maybe you're adrift without hope. Or maybe you're a dreamer who thinks your big goal is utterly impossible. Josh Lajaunie is here to tell you that anything's possible and by changing to a mindset of self love you can get yourself unstuck from any situation. It's a great episode! A few years ago I listened to Josh on the absolutely fantastic Rich Roll Podcast. If you haven't heard Josh's story, buckle up, it's a good one! Living in small town Louisiana, Josh found himself incrementally gaining weight as life went on, eventually rocking the scales at over 400 pounds. He realized that he needed to make a change. Over a few years of being conscious of his diet and nutrition, he eventually settled onto a vegan diet. At the same time he started moving his body "like a human is supposed to" and began challenging himself to long distance running. Flash forward to today and Josh has dropped 200 pounds (....You read that correctly....TWO HUNDRED!) an
