Episode 120: Good Christian Fun (Ft. Kevin Porter & Caroline Ely)
05/03/2019 Duración: 01h11minTHIS WEEK... JP, Father Chuck and Matt are joined by Kevin Porter and Caroline Ely of the Good Christian Fun podcast! The Masters of Divinity are big fans of Good Christian Fun, a podcast dedicated to "delving into the strange upside-down world of Christian pop culture," this of course is straight up our alley, and we absolutely had to get Kevin and Caroline on the show. Sure enough, they obliged, and joined us to talk about their backgrounds, how they met, how Good Christian Fun started, and even spent a good amount of time just laughing about the Christian media that has been covered on both of our shows. Be sure to check out Good Christian Fun at https://goodchristianfun.com and listen to them wherever podcasts are available. Episode 119: A Case of the Mondays — A Discussion on Office Space
26/02/2019 Duración: 01h29minTHIS WEEK... JP, Father Chuck and Jump To Conclusions Matt discuss the 1999 cult comedy classic, Mike Judge's "Office Space." The Mike Judge film was released theatrically 20 years ago to very little acclaim, but happened to cement its place in pop culture when it was later released on VHS and DVD by charming audiences with its hilariously mundane characters and painfully relatable workplace setting. Some of us grew up loving this film, before we even had jobs, and now that some of us have been through the ringer that is the corporate world, we have a whole new perspective on what Mike Judge was telling us. This isn't like the Avatar episode. We all pretty much agree that Office Space is hilarious and great, and anyone who's ever been passive aggressively told to come in on the weekend should watch it. 19/02/2019 Duración: 01h06minTHIS WEEK... JP is having a bummer week, so he and Father Chuck decide to talk about the things that make them happy. This leads to discussions about the hilarious sitcom Brooklyn 99, ska bands, pop punk, and a very strange detour into Stephanie Meyer and Twilight where JP talks about that one time a Paramore concert broke out outside his office. Episode 117: The Soul Patrol — Redefining Evangelism
12/02/2019 Duración: 01h20minTHIS WEEK... In a recent study conducted by the Barna Group, 47% of Christian Millennials think it's wrong to share their faith. We were skeptical. Do Christian Millennials really want to avoid sharing their faith, and expressing their beliefs? Or is the idea of evangelism going through a period of redefinition? If you grew up in the church, the act of evangelizing probably paid a significant role in your faith. After all, in the Bible, Jesus does command his disciples to go out unto the world and spread His message, a la the Great Commission. But what exactly does that mean? Does it mean we should be standing on the street corners shouting through a megaphone? Is evangelizing approaching strangers on the street to simply talk about Jesus? Is the wordless book and pre-prepared spiels effective tools in introducing someone to a brand new faith? We recount our own experiences in evangelism and discuss how we personally feel about evangelizing, and offer many thoughts on the study that was conducted by Barna (

Episode 116: Run Away and Join the Circus
05/02/2019 Duración: 01h17minThis week: JP, Father Chuck and Matt are joined by Amy once again, to talk about pursuing your dreams and just how daunting that can be these days. What stops people from following their passions? What risks are involved in pursuing ones dreams? You were probably told when you were a kid that pursing your heart's desire is the most important thing you can do, but something happened along the way, didn't it? Unless of course you're one of the lucky ones who is living the dream (this episode probably isn't for you). This week's episode is all about what it takes to follow the things that makes us come alive and sparks our interests, and how the journey after that is not always what it's cracked up to be. Episode 115: Totally Depraved — A Discussion On Calvinism
29/01/2019 Duración: 01h28minTHIS WEEK... We talk about Calvinism. ...Ugh, guys, I'm so tired, do I really have to get into it? Ok, fine. Join JP and Father Chuck as they DIVE DEEP into the tenants of Reformed Theology, also known as CALVINISM! They talk about who John Calvin was, and how his school of thought originated and influenced the church today. They also spend a good amount of the episode struggling with these beliefs, as well as share their own personal experiences with Calvinism and Reformed Theology. It's a doozy of an episode, and I am so tired y'all, gonna end it right here, press play, jeez. Episode 114: Floppy Na'vi Ears 2: Avatar Boogaloo
22/01/2019 Duración: 01h13minTHIS WEEK... It's been 10 years since the release of AVATAR, and we've taken it upon ourselves to take a closer look at James Cameron's grand opus. AVATAR was released to wide acclaim and massive financial success, becoming the 5th most successful film of all time, and earning numerous Oscar nominations (and two wins!). And yet today it's not nearly as celebrated as Star Wars or Lord of the Rings, which is the opposite of what everybody expected to happen. After watching the film, all three Masters came away with three VERY different opinions: Father Chuck is a massive fan, Matt strongly dislikes it, and JP thinks it's fine. JP attempts to rewrite scenes and flesh out characters while also pitching ideas for Avatar 2: It Was The Abyss All Along. This and more on MASTERS OF DIVINITY. Episode 113: Jerry O'Connell Liked Our Tweet
15/01/2019 Duración: 01h14minTHIS WEEK... Back in the 90s, after it's newfound success with X-Files and the continued success with Star Trek, 20th Century Fox wanted another sci-fi hit on television. Enter Sliders, a show about an unlikely group of people "sliding" from dimension to the next, discovering countless alternate realities with endless possibilities. As you all know JP has had a fascination with the series since its inception and well after its untimely cancelation. While the series' premise was fascinating and should have spawned a brilliant hour of television, it never quite landed it. It's nearly 20 years later since the show was cancelled, and Matt & JP watched the original pilot episode from the 90s...does the show hold up? Is Jerry O'Connell doing all the heavy lifting? Episode 112: Do Not Call Me Skipper
08/01/2019 Duración: 01h05minTHIS WEEK... JP and Father Chuck are here to have a good, old-fashioned riff-sesh. From generational influence on culture and happiness, to the viewing order of Star Wars, and a whole lot of talk about Disney parks (including Epcot). Father Chuck explains why The Last Jedi is the best Star Wars movie, and JP is fascinated with a new short documentary he found on YouTube. There's also a lot of talk about what to look forward to in 2019, so you'll definitely want to check this episode out to get you excited for the new year. Episode 111: An Official Red Ryder Carbine Action 200 Shot Range Model Podcast
23/12/2018 Duración: 01h16sTHIS WEEK... Oh, FUDGE. The gang is back, and we're talking about the 1980s Christmas family classic, A CHRISTMAS STORY. If you follow the podcast, you might remember a couple of years ago when JP mentioned how much he hated A CHRISTMAS STORY, and how Father Chuck and Matt were shocked and appalled at this revelation about their moderator. Two years later, and JP finally decides to revisit it to give it another shot. The results? You'll just have to listen. The trio talks about their favorite scenes, how the movie became a pop culture sensation, how it's celebrated as a holiday classic, and a little bit of insight on some behind-the-scenes action. You'll shoot your eye out if you listen to this episode, kid, and might even go blind from soap poison. Happy Holidays, and Merry Christmas from the Masters of Divinity! Episode 110: We Kiss Courting Goodbye
18/12/2018 Duración: 41minTHIS WEEK... Hey...remember when everyone "stopped dating" and tried out "courtship?" Joshua Harris, the author of the infamous book "I Kissed Dating Goodbye" made a public statement on his website apologizing and seemingly owning up to the mistakes he made with his book. Harris's book was released 20 years ago, and since then it has come under a massive barrage of scrutiny, especially after many relationships modeled after the ideals espoused in the book have come undone. So of course, in true Masters of Divinity fashion, ya boys HAVE SOME THOUGHTS. Episode 109: Treksgiving 2: The Wrath of La Croix
11/12/2018 Duración: 44minTHIS WEEK... Hey folks, sorry for the long wait! But we're back! And yeah, yeah, I know, it's nowhere near Thanksgiving, but we couldn't just go a year without our second annual Treksgiving! This week Matt tells Father Chuck and JP all about Star Trek Discovery since he's the only one of the Masters of Divinity brave enough to give it a shot, and they have a good ol' time discussing that. There's also some talk about The Orville and Galaxy Quest. Trek with us! Episode 108: The Gang Finally Reviews A Thief in the Night
30/10/2018 Duración: 01h07minTHIS WEEK... In a special spooky edition of The Masters of Divinity, Father Chuck, Matt and your moderator JP all watched the Christploitation rapture classic, A THIEF IN THE NIGHT. If you were raised in a Christian home in America, you're probably very familiar with the Kirk Cameron classic, LEFT BEHIND, a film that's an adaptation of the popular book series about a band of characters left on Earth after the rapture, and must endure hellish apocalyptic events, including the reign of the anti-christ. What you probably didn't know is that in 1972, a B-movie director with $60,000.00 and a scrappy crew and a band of no-name actors in Des Moines, Iowa DID IT FIRST. We've mentioned this movie multiple times throughout the run of this podcast, and we finally all decided that we would revisit the film and dedicate an entire episode to it. It's finally here, just in time for Halloween: our review and discussion of A THIEF IN THE NIGHT. If you'd like to support the show, become a patron by visit our patreon! https

Episode 107: A Halloween Riff-Jam
23/10/2018 Duración: 56minTHIS WEEK... Halloween is fast approaching! In this week's episode, JP, Father Chuck and Matt (!) return to talk about their plans for the holiday and how each of them are getting into the spirit of the season. With the new Halloween movie arriving, they of course talk about that period of cinema that most effected them: the 90s cycle of slasher films that were inspired by Scream. The guys are here to riff this week, and it ends with a special announcement about next week's episode that you don't want to miss! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/masters-of-divinity/message

Episode 106: It's Just Star Wars
16/10/2018 Duración: 01h29minTHIS WEEK... A recently released study from USC took a close and calculated look at the seemingly endless backlash that Star Wars: The Last Jedi has been receiving on social media. For the past year The Last Jedi has been perceived as a divisive film, but what if that divisiveness was engineered by trolls, political activists and even...Russian bots? JP and Father Chuck take a close look at the study and share their thoughts. Article Source: "Star Wars: The Last Jedi backlash fueled by bots, trolls and political activists, study finds" by Julia Alexander of Polygon https://www.polygon.com/2018/10/2/17927554/star-wars-last-jedi-backlash-study-rian-johnson-trolls-russian-bots-political-far-right If you'd like to support the show, become a patron by visit our patreon! https://www.patreon.com/MastersOfDivinity Follow us on social media: http://instagram.com/mastersofdivinity https://twitter.com/mastersdivinity https://www.facebook.com/mastersofdivinity Subscribe to our YouTube Channel https://www.youtube.com

Episode 105: I Love (Consuming) The 80s
10/10/2018 Duración: 01h19minTHIS WEEK... You've heard the saying, "The 80s was the best time to be a kid," well, we regret to inform you that we've discovered why, and it's actually kind of sad and scary. JP and Father Chuck learn about how in the 80s Ronald Reagan used the FCC to lift regulations on advertising toward children via children's programming, and how that may have had a hand in shaping the attitudes of Generation X, Millennials, and more generations to come. They also go in-depth on how shows and toys like Transformers and He-Man were conceived, and reveal that they can't quite wrap the heads around the series and toy line M.A.S.K., which is just bad. Episode 104: Parasocial Penguin
02/10/2018 Duración: 01h21minTHIS WEEK... JP and Father Chuck discuss the phenomenon of parasocial relationships, and how potent they have become since the advent of the internet personality. Father Chuck tries extremely hard, with much difficulty, to identify with those who find themselves in a parasocial relationship, while JP fully admits that, yeah, he's totally in more than a few. We also learn the tragic tale of the Parasocial Penguin, Grape-kun, and a brief rundown on our fascination with the Milkshake Duck (the duck is racist, sorry). If you'd like to pursue a parasocial relationship with The Masters of Divinity, listening to all of our episodes and becoming a patron on our Patreon is a great place to start! https://www.patreon.com/MastersOfDivinity If you're interested in a much deeper dive into Parasocial Relationships, check out the documentary "Fake Friends" by Shannon Strucci of StrucciMovies on YouTube. https://youtu.be/KLA-uFKjQ-g --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/masters-of-divinity/message

Episode 103: Snaptured
27/09/2018 Duración: 01h11minTHIS WEEK... JP and Father Chuck are back again to talk about THANOS, from the hit summer blockbuster and latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Avengers: Infinity War. The discussion is mostly focused on Thanos and whether or not he works as a character and a protagonist. There's also some lovely chatting on emotional labor, brief mention of parasocial relationships, and JP's harrowing tale of being stung by a yellowjacket wasp. It hurt, guys. Episode 102: Zero Mention of Black Hole Grenades
11/09/2018 Duración: 29minTHIS WEEK... Gondor calls for aid! But Rohan doesn't answer... Father Chuck and Father Fun have a nice chat about rewatching the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and even dip their toes into some Star Trek related talk. Listen, if you're a fan of Thor: The Dark World, you better turn away right now, it gets absolutely zero love in this episode, and goes completely undervalued. Also, both Fathers mention Iron Man 2 and how it might be somewhat underrated, but completely fail to mention that JP was in that movie. I mean, you can't see him or anything, but he can totally point out a scene where he's present, but there's a giant CGI robot taking up about 3/4ths of the screen, so you can't see him. But he's totally there, I swear! Anyway enjoy the episode and complete lack of mentioning black hole grenades in Thor: The Dark World. We spend a good portion reflecting on our journey as Masters of Divinity and how much it's meant to us, referring to our favorite episodes and moments.
