First of all, apologies for the audio quality. Happens sometimes! Ok. News time. New stuff from Pain of Salvation, Metallica, Cyclamen, Benighted, August Burns Red, Protest the Hero. Shining are doing a Patreon, Dream Theater an Images and Words tour. Blood Music are going legit. The piracy/community site What.cd is dead. Keep of Kalessin are involved in a pyramid scheme somehow? • 56 – Feeling of Weight ft. A Sense of Gravity

    14/11/2016 Duración: 01h45min

Hey, we have guests this week as well! Namely Brendon Williams and C.J. Jenkins from A Sense of Gravity! We talk about the upcoming album Atrament, how they got to this point, and what it takes to make progressive metal. There’s obviously more to it, so find out for yourself! Then we talk about news items, including the upcoming System of a Down album, Cyclamen‘s cover of Linkin Park, the new In Flames album, Betraying the Martyrs, the Ned Flanders themed band Okilly Dokilly, the “incredible” Pain of Salvation artwork, new Behold the Arctopus (also Indricothere), Khonsu, the brother band of Keep of Kalessin, Eagles of Death Metal and the Bataclan, Oathbreaker‘s Audiotree session, Hollow Earth, and this dank playlist. In the cool people section we discuss potential movie of the year Arrival. Enjoy! By the way, the Dennis Villeneuve movie I call Maniac is actually Enemy. My bad! 56 – Feeling of Weight ft. • 55 – Patreon Shitshow feat. Riley of Allegaeon

    07/11/2016 Duración: 01h33min

So, you all may have seen the absolute unbridled rage against Allegaeon‘s Patreon from last week. I thought this was pretty unfounded and ridiculous, so I invited Riley McShane of Allegaeon to talk about how he views this situation, and whether some of the accusations made in the articles are founded or not. We ended up having a great chat about the band’s situation and crowd funding. I recommend listening to this one, regardless of what you think about the situation! Then Eden and I talk about news and stuff. The new Metallica song, the new Shokran video, the upcoming Soen album, the new Thy Catafalque album, the new Disillusion video, the new… I got tired of going “the new X”. Instead, listen to this really dumb but amazing mashup of the Space Jam tune with the new Meshuggah album by Analog Staple. Oh, also, Dominic Forrest Lapointe joined First Fragment. Balance Interruption is an awesome saxed-up black metal thing. Alkaloid are on Season of Mist, officially making it the best label ever. Facebook added

  • 54 – On Strange Hoops

    31/10/2016 Duración: 01h28min

Why post show notes when you can just post a dank meme? Fine, since I try to maintain a semblance of professionalism, I’ll post the show notes too. As you can tell, we talk about the new Mithras album. Obviously, we talk about news. That is the established format of this podcast after all! We talk about the new Painted in Exile album (finally!), The Corelia kickstarter, the new Avenged Sevenfold album (that came out of nowhere), the new Korn album (yep), the Scale the Summit “breakup”, the Allegaeon Patreaon, Frontierer‘s first live show and Arkona‘s new old song. We also reflect back on things, like Linkin Park‘s Hybrid Theory turning 16 and our discussion on Slice the Cake from last week. We also mention a few other things, like a Guitar Hero chart of A Sense of Gravity‘s “Echo Chasers”, and some shitty flute covers, including this excellent one of Dragonforce‘s masterpiece. Then, our underrated album, which is Rishloo‘s Living As Ghosts With Buildings As Teeth. Also, our cool people section covers some

  • 53 – Lord BookWorm

    24/10/2016 Duración: 01h39min

We’ve been getting a lot of comments asking for us to talk about books, so we spend the majority of this episode talking about our favorite sci-fi/fantasy novels. But before that, we talk about some news as well. News involving Cilice, Arkona, Slice The Cake, Dark Tranquillity and Schammasch. You can listen to our episode where Chris from Schammasch was our guest here, by the way. We also talk about a couple of cool releases we discovered, namely Fractal Cypher and Crator (featuring members of Origin and Gorguts). Then we do the underrated release highlight of the week, which is Defiant Imagination by Quo Vadis. And then there’s books. Many books. We cover authors like the big R.R.s (Tolkien and Martin), Robert Jordan (ugh), Brandon Sanderson, Roger Zelazny, Hannu Rajaniemi, Thomas Sturgeon, Gene Woolfe, V.E. Schwab, Greg Egan, Jim Butcher, Joe Abercrombie and more. We had a great time with this! Also, if you want to check these books out and also support the podcast at the same time, you can get an audiobo

  • 52 – Wow, It’s Been A Year

    17/10/2016 Duración: 01h39min

We’re a year old now! So, we just do news like regular, then some opinion time. Also, bullshit philosophy time is back! Topics: Anthony Fantano on Meshugggah, Vader, Entombed, Red Fang, Car Bomb, Issues, Trivium, In Flames, Thrawsunblat, Ophidius, Avenged Sevenfold. This Metalsucks article on punk and comedy, then this thing about a certain luthier who is too good for pop music. Underrated album of the week: VOLA – Inamazes. Then we talk about why we got rid of review scores here at the blog. Enjoy! 52 – Wow, It’s Been A Year https://s3.amazonaws.com/heavypodisheavycast/ep52.mp3 Right click here to download audio file. • 51 – Grab Your Pitchforks, Drop Your Needles

    10/10/2016 Duración: 01h34min

The title is a dig, you say? Not at all! It’s not because this week our topic discussion revolves around how metalheads gravitate to specific genres outside of metal and how that’s influenced by metal journalism. Totally. Here, let’s talk about some new music, releases or news instead. We shitpost about stuff that came out recently, like stuff by Meshuggah, Allegaeon, Opeth (salt interview part 1, part 2, part 3), Disillusion, Metallica (AJFA-ified), Testament (aliens, weed), Logan Mader’s Once Human, Dark Tranquillity, Protest the Hero, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Gojira (Terra Incognita remastered!), and more. Maybe. Then we talk about this “interesting” article about Slayer‘s Reign in Blood turning 30, and highlight a few bands worth checking out. Namely Starkill, Mammoth, Elarcos and Raptorbaby. And the week’s underrated release is Ønskediktet by Ørkenkjøtt! Enjoy! By the way, this is that article about Kendrick Lamar – “Why Did Everyone Claim to Enjoy Kendrick Lamar’s ‘To Pimp a Butterfly’?” 51 – Grab Y

  • 50 – Back Off Track

    03/10/2016 Duración: 01h49min

Eden’s back! This means we get to talk about stuff like Tidal (this article is awesome by the way), other streaming services, this article about Opeth (which gets us pretty salty), the breakup of Bolt Thrower, Portnoy playing the 12 step suite he wrote for Dream Theater, inconsistencies in promos labels send to us, then new music or news from bands like Dark Tranquillity, Downfall of Gaia, Oathbreaker, Alcest, Metallica, A Sense of Gravity, The Agonist, the DOOM OST by Mick Gordon, Watchtower, Riverside, Plini, Pain of Salvation, Mithridatic and Venom Prison. Finally we talk about Elvenking‘s underrated The Pagan Manifesto. Enjoy! 50 – Back Off Track https://s3.amazonaws.com/heavypodisheavycast/ep50.mp3 Right click here to download audio file. • 49 – TECH DEATH EXTRAVAGANZA

    26/09/2016 Duración: 01h59min

Fellow tech death enthusiast Ahmed joins me this week and we geek out about tech death for over an hour! Since Eden isn’t cool like us, we don’t get a chance to do this while he’s around, so we really went deep with this opportunity! We discuss some news first, like new music/content from Opeth, Meshuggah, Ion Dissonance, Anaal Nathrakh, Astral Path, VOLA, and an interesting Patreon by The Reign of Kindo. Then we go into tech death, how it has evolved historically and geographically; what its watershed moments were, and we discuss some of the most important and influential albums in the genre. BALLS DEEP. Enjoy! 49 – TECH DEATH EXTRAVAGANZA https://s3.amazonaws.com/heavypodisheavycast/ep49.mp3 Right click here to download audio file. Check out this link to listen to it on iTunes. • 48 – I Apologize In Advance For This…

    19/09/2016 Duración: 01h02min

… terrible content! So, this week the blog met up at NYC to celebrate Eden’s wedding. We had no opportunity to record a real cast, but my philosophy with the podcast is to not skip a week no matter what, so I just temporarily lowered my standards for quality! So, this week you get two random recordings of blog people having pointless conversations in noisy environments. If that doesn’t sound appealing, I totally get it! You should come back next week for your regular programming. If it does, well, whatever rocks your boat! Either way, thanks for listening to the podcast, and send Eden some congratulations! See you all next week. 48 – I Apologize In Advance For This… https://s3.amazonaws.com/heavypodisheavycast/ep48.mp3 Right click here to download audio file. • 47 – Might As Well Call Us SeasonOfMistCast

    12/09/2016 Duración: 01h33min

Yeah, we love pretty much everything on Season of Mist. So what? This week we talk about new music from Thy Catafalque, Brain Drill, Opeth, Snowy Shaw, SHOKRAN (teaser here), Noctem, Victor Wooten‘s new band Octavision, Oxiplegatz, Exotype, Sleep Token, Hannes Grossmann, and Watchtower. Then we go over some news, like Darkthrone‘s Fenriz getting elected for city council, Persefone announcing a new album, Sikth reissuing Death of a Dead Day, and Enslaved announcing a rarities collection. Then we discuss two albums that have been on our minds: Insomnium‘s Winter’s Gate, and Misery Index‘s The Killing Gods. We introduce our new segment, “Underrated release highlight of the week” – this week we talk about Arkona‘s Yav. Finally, we talk about our process for discovering and ingesting new music. Enjoy! Also cool people time has some cool stuff. 47 – Might As Well Call Us SeasonOfMistCast https://s3.amazonaws.com/heavypodisheavycast/ep47.mp3 Right click here to download audio file. • 46 – The World Is A Danker Place Now

    05/09/2016 Duración: 01h52min

This week we have a set of surprise guests that we announced last week! I guess that’s not really a surprise, huh? It’s Eric and Drew from TABPxDSME, in other words The Aurora Borealis Project and Drewsif Stalin’s Musical Endeavors! We have a good old time trying to talk about their amazing upcoming album The World Is A Colder Place Now. Well, we try anyway. Since Drew and I are both invested in derailing as much as possible, it goes to different places. I had a great time! Then, we talk about the news of the week.  What news of the week? Stuff like Misha of Periphery doing a song for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, Heri Joensen of Tyr killing whales and defending his actions, Stereogum’s monthly metal roundup, You Bred Raptors playing to an empty venue, then new music or teases towards such by Departe, Saor, Destrage, System of a Down, Anaal Nathrakh, Anciients, Alcest, Negura Bunget, Hannes Grossmann, and Allegaeon. Eden gets pretty mad about the last one! 46 – The World Is A Danker Place Now https://s3.

  • 45 – An Apple A Day Keeps The Spotify Away

    29/08/2016 Duración: 01h57min

This week we’re joined by fellow editor Nick again! And as you can probably tell from the title, we talk about some streaming service drama! Specifically, the trainwreck that followed Frank Ocean‘s new Apple Music exclusive album, the UMG salt that followed, and Spotify stirrings in relation to industry trends. But wait, there’s more industry drama! A former Victory Records employee wrote a huge expose talking about all the stuff that goes down in the label, confirming the suspicions of many. We then talk about SubRosa and their interview about the music they wrote in relation to the Mormon church’s treatment of LGBTQI individuals. We talk about a bunch of new music and music-related announcements as well. Including: poorly-realized analogies about post/weird-death metal involving Ulcerate, Coma Cluster Void, Car Bomb, Negura Bunget, Meshuggah, Mithras (and more Mithras), Allegaeon‘s Rush cover, WRVTH being awesome, In Flames being terrible (seriously), Ninjaspy, Darkthrone, Emperor, Brujeria (and thei

  • 44 – Eden Got Eaten

    22/08/2016 Duración: 01h52min

In true soap-opera-that-outlived-its-course fashion, we’re replacing the actor who plays the part of Eden with David Wu of Cyborg Octopus! Yeah, he’s been here before, exactly 10 episodes ago!First, we talk about how artists feel about criticism, delve into the creative process a bit, and while we cover some of the same ground we did before, we end up in a different place! Then, we do the news, talking about Oathbearer, An Endless Sporadic, Metallica, Dance Gavin Dance, The Depression Sessions (The Acacia Strain, Thy Art Is Murder, Fit For An Autopsy), Virvum, Ninjaspy and Devin Townsend. Also, check David’s new channel he alluded to last time, RiffShop! 44 – Eden Got Eaten https://s3.amazonaws.com/heavypodisheavycast/ep44.mp3 Right click here to download audio file. • 43 – I Spent 5 Minutes Trying To Come Up With A Title

    15/08/2016 Duración: 02h02min

Meta-title! How metal of me to be very meta on a metal podcast that’s also pretty meta. This week we have a bunch of news. Either new releases, singles, teasers or whatever from: Inanimate Existence, Darkthrone, Wardruna, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Sinsaenum, Lamb of God, Voivod, Shokran, Dark Tranquillity, Thy Catafalque, Riverside, Fit for An Autopsy, The Agonist, Disillusion, Exotype, Native Construct and Serpentine Dominion (Adam D of Killswitch Engage and George Fisher of Cannibal Corpse). By the way, Metallica‘s Black Album is 25 years old now! Also an analysis of how global metal is, Pelagic Records’s starter kit, and a top 10 list of bands from Norway. While on the topic of top 10 lists, we do an impromptu “Top 10 songs that have the desired effect every time”. Or as Eden calls it, “Evergreen songs” or something. Whatever. Then we have our bullshit philosophy corner on Hegelian dialectics and the early metal scene! Finally, we talk about No Man’s Sky in the cool people section. Whew! 43 – I Spen

  • 42 – Philosopher’s Guide To The Galaxy

    08/08/2016 Duración: 01h39min

Yeah, this week’s dank number fact is pretty obvious. Also, finally we introduce “Bullshit Philosophy Corner” as an official segment! Oh, we also talk about metal. Stuff like Morbid Angel, The HAARP Machine, From First To Last (and Skrillex), Oddland, Opeth, Jinjer, Defeated Sanity, Carnifex, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Equipoise, Alcest and Cortexiphan. Also some dumb top 50 list. Then we do two topics, namely bands that “you had to be there/then to get”, and how fans fixate on members of bands who have passed away.
