It is frequently considered one of the worst songs of all time. And yet we, as a people, shot this song up onto the charts 5 times since its composition in 1968. The most popular of which was released by Donna Summer as a 17 minute-long suite. We should be ashamed. Cake melting? Rivers in the sky? Chinese checkers? Somehow it has won two Grammy's. This isn't your typical episode of Decomposition. This episode is more of a love letter to the band REM. Natty Bumpercar grew up in Macon, Georgia. He went to school at UGA in Athens. Thus, REM is a very important band to him. He has been able to rub elbows with the likes of Stipe, Buck, Mills and Berry on numerous occasions and Michael Stipe himself even doled out the nicest complement Natty has ever gotten. Dennis DeYoung is a crazy person. He created the concept album/ rock-opera "Kilroy Was Here," which was a half-baked idea that essentially caused Tommy Shaw to quit the band. It's easy to see why. This song and, likely the entire album, was garbage. He was like a non-talented Jim Steinman/ Billy Joel/ Jenna Maroney hybrid.. What on Earth does "Modren man," mean? Why on earth does he pronounce "Mannequin," like that? He's not a hero, he's not a savior, but he definitely IS a murderer who will save you heroically. Kilroy is also possibly the most polite murderer ever. We also discuss what it is that makes one human, and coin a new type of irony; Accidental Irony. This super-group ROCKS SO SOFT! Its a group made up of not-so-terribly well known musicians; Blond Fred Armisen, Emilia Estevez, Darryl Hall, and Darryl Strawberry. How is it that Teresa and Katie don't like hair bands, but they do love this song? The Answer: Sing-along. We learn all about shredding on the guitar (Blooms, Bong, and twee.) We get into the oddness of one particular line that nobody knows anyway. Are there blue traffic lights? Is this just another dirty old man song? Maybe not, but it is man-splainy and condescending. Jewel's album "Pieces of You," was an integral part of Katie and Emily's formative teenage years. Very moody, very melodramatic, and loaded with pancakes. Jewel obviously did something to ruin this relationship...and then turned into a straight-up crazy person who wrote a song. Possibly while brandishing an ak47 in Mexico with her songwriting partner, Steve Poltz. Jewel switches from church-voice to baby-voice seamlessly. She writes bad poetry. And she doesn't know the meaning of the word "casualty." Perhaps that would be a good thing to know before handling a semi-automatic in a drug bust in Mexico. HEAR YE! HEAR YE! David Bowie and Iggy Pop cordially invite you to the drug ball!! "Let's Dance," was rock-legend David Bowie's most commercially successful album. It also contained this garbage number. Co-written and originally recorded by Iggy Pop, it may be about a Vietnamese woman. This is a crazy, fun, ridiculous song... which is why we love it. Super-producer, Don Was, created something that makes no sense, and yet somehow makes perfect sense. Happy 2-year anniversary!!! Concluding our 3-part series, Steinmania, we tackle what might be the most insane Jim Steinman song yet. Well, it's certainly the most insane video. Bonnie Tyler teamed up with Jim Steinman to deliver a powerhouse ballad. Tyler's distinctive vocals and Steinman's theatrical songwriting soared to the top of the charts and is still a much beloved song. There's a LOT of aggressive fingering and fisting in this episode... which Katie does not care for. Also, vampires... somehow there are vampires. This song is pretty insufferable. Will.i.am recorded this song for his album #willpower and then decided to nix it, which we understand. Both Mick Jagger and J-Lo phone-in a performance... cool. There's a lot of talk about Will.i.am's penis (or someone else's, it isn't clear.) Statues, by the way, don't have to be hard. Feces isn't pronounced "fees-is." Some of these lines would be better if they were written for a better-sounding song. They weren't. This song is pretty insufferable.
