Change Lives, Matthew 8:1–10
02/02/2020Four Missional Values of Woodmen: 1. Gather 2. Connect 3. Grow 4. Contribute What would we like people to line up at the end of our lives and thank us for? We are stewards of extraordinary influence and unprecedented opportunity. Two Characteristics of Woodmen: 1. Leadership Culture 2. Multiplication Culture Our dream for Colorado Springs: 1. A world where the church is considered an essential part of every local community. 2. A world where people skeptical of what we believe are envious of how well we treat each other and amazed at how well we treat them. 3. A world where people want the message of Jesus to be true before they believe it’s true. Preaching the Gospel, Acts 17:22–34
26/01/2020The apostle Paul was the greatest missionary the church has ever had, and in Acts 17:22-34 we see, in part, the reason why. Paul did not have one message that he simply repeated in each and every town he visited, but instead, he relates to his listeners drawing from their culture and understanding. Paul’s message at the Areopagus gives us all an example to embrace. 1. The message (vs. 22-31) a. Paul began with their concern (vs. 22-23) b. Paul introduced them to their creator (vs. 24-25) c. Paul explained the relationship (vs. 26-27) d. Paul identified their error (vs. 28-29) e. Paul called for repentance (vs. 30-31) 2. The response (vs. 32-34) Songs: Great Things #7111321 by J Myrin & Wickham Phil Wickham Music, Simply Global Song, Sing My Songs Hallelujah For The Cross #7107551 by B Glover, C McClarney & J Pardo 9t One Songs, Ariose Music, Capitol CMG Genesis, Jesus Culture Music & Meaux Jeaux Music Cornerstone #6158927 by W B Bradbury, E Liljero, R Morgan, E Mote & J Myrin 2011

A Heart for the Lost, Acts 17:16–21
19/01/2020While Paul waited for his teammates in Athens, Acts 17:16 says, “his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols.” Rather than be cold, indifferent or angry at the depravity that surrounded him, the apostle Paul was moved into action by it. Paul began reasoning with people in the synagogue and the marketplace and we should be quick to follow his example. Rather than feeling frustration with the unbelieving world around us, we should be moved into action. 1. Holy passion (v. 16) 2. The right response (vs. 17-18a) 3. A mixed reaction (v. 18b) 4. The Curious Will Seek, Acts 17:10–15
12/01/2020Having been sent to Berea, Paul and Silas begin to share in the synagogue there. Unlike those who had come before them in Thessalonica, these Jews “received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so” (Acts 17:11). We too should be encouraged to search the scriptures with confidence that the Lord will bring us understanding. 1. Routine faithfulness (v. 10) 2. An unexpected audience (v. 11) a. Hungry (v. 11b) b. Careful (v. 11c) 3. A predictable response (v. 12) 4. The Opposition is Real, Acts 17:1–9
05/01/2020The Gospel has true power and the ministry of Paul and Silas draws many to faith. Unfortunately, the opposition is real too. The home of Jason is attacked, and he and some of the brothers are brought before the city authorities. The accusation is that, “These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also” (Acts 17:6). Little did they know the gospel would indeed change the world. 1. Following God’s call (v. 1) 2. The Good News is welcomed (vs. 2-4) 3. The Good News is threatening (vs. 5-8) 4. Who Gets the Glory? Numbers 20
29/12/2019No one is exempt from the longing to be applauded and affirmed. And when we think we deserve the glory for doing good things, it's easy to seek ways to turn the spotlight on ourselves. Interestingly, God takes issue not with our good deeds but with our efforts to heap the credit upon ourselves. Which leads us to the question, if it’s not me, who should get the glory? The Promise, Matthew 1:18–25
24/12/2019When Joseph, a good and just man, learned that his betrothed, Mary, was with child he was unwilling to put her to shame and resolved to divorce her quietly. As he was considering these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him and told him to “not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit” (Matthew 1:20). This son was to be named Jesus “for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21). This son has come and this Christmas Eve we celebrate his offer of forgiveness to all and declare the one name under heaven by which men and women can be saved. While like Joseph this news can catch many off-guard, we pray that they will respond in obedient faith like him. THEME - GRACE 1. A divine beginning (v. 18) 2. A good man (v. 19) 3. A call to respond (vs. 20-23) 4. The choice is yours (vs. 24-25) Songs: Angels We Have Heard On High (Wickham) #7138825 by E S Barnes, J Chadwick, J Smith & P Wickham 2019 Be Essential Songs Joy To The World #24016 by

The Nunc Dimittis, Luke 2:29–32
22/12/2019Out of obedience to the law, Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to offer a sacrifice. At the temple, they encounter a righteous and devout man, named Simeon, who was “waiting for the consolation of Israel” and had been told by the Holy Spirit that “he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ” (Luke 2:26). In the Spirit, Simeon declares that Jesus is “a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel” (Luke 2:32). Though some 2000 years removed, Simeon’s words remain true today. Jesus is the Light of the World for all people, and we believe, in faith, that many will come to know him personally this Christmas Eve at Woodmen. THEME – EXPECTATION 1. A man – righteous and devout (vs. 25-26) 2. An encounter – orchestrated by God (vs. 27-28) 3. A song – salvation has come (vs. 29-32) 4. The truth – not all will sing (vs. 33-35) Songs: Go Tell It On The Mountain / Oh, What a Wonderful Child O Come All Ye Faithful (Riddle) #31054 by C

The Benedictus, Luke 1:68–79
15/12/2019Zechariah the priest had been serving the Lord in the temple when the angel of the Lord, Gabriel, announced that his wife would conceive and bear a son named “John” who would be “great before the Lord” and “turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God” (Luke 1:16). Zechariah struggles to believe and is temporarily made deaf and mute until the sign is fulfilled. When Elizabeth, Zechariah’s wife, delivers their son John, Zechariah’s hearing and speech is restored. Filled with the Holy Spirit, Zechariah prophetically speaks of his son’s future work and the fulfillment of God’s promise to redeem his people. Today, we too declare in faith God’s promised salvation through the work of his son Jesus. THEME – HOPE 1. Salvation is from God (vs. 68-71) 2. Salvation is for us (vs. 72-75) 3. His Mission is ours (vs. 76-77) 4. All Fear is gone (vs. 78-79) Songs: Hark The Herald Angels Sing / King Of Heaven #7019799 by C Wesley, F Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, J Ingram & P Baloche © Integrity Worship Music,

The Magnificat, Luke 1:45–55
08/12/2019The angel Gabriel is sent to Mary, a young virgin betrothed to Joseph, a descendant of David, and announces that she will conceive, bear a son and call his name Jesus. When Mary meets her relative Elizabeth, herself miraculously carrying John the Baptist, Mary erupts into a song of praise as she recognizes that God had looked upon her “humble estate” and will use her to bring to fulfillment his plans to redeem his people. While many will look upon this Christmas as nothing more than a traditional celebration, we the redeemed people of God, like Mary, rejoice that Jesus has come to us, not because we were worthy or deserving, but because we were in need of a Savior. THEME – JOY 1. A young woman believed (v. 45) 2. There is no greater joy (vs. 46-48) 3. There is no greater God (vs. 49-50) 4. There is no cause for worry (vs. 51-53) 5. Rejoice! Our King has come! The Successor, 2 Kings 2:1–14
24/11/2019The battle with Baal is not over, but Elijah’s ministry has come to an end. Elijah will be succeeded by Elisha who, after witnessing Elijah ascending into heaven, receives a double portion of his spirit. While God does raise up individuals to do His work, His working power is never limited to any one individual. God will continue to accomplish His purposes through others even when our time is done. 1. Faithfulness in service (vs. 1-7) 2. Humility for the future (vs. 8-9) 3. Eyes that see (vs. 10-12a) 4. The Final Confrontation, 2 Kings 1:1–18
17/11/2019Just like he had confronted his father Ahab, Elijah is sent to confront Ahaziah. Instead of receiving Elijah’s rebuke and humbling himself, Ahaziah seeks to apprehend and capture the prophet with devastating consequences for the ones he sends. When we are confronted with the error of our ways, we must constantly seek a soft heart before the Lord and seek His forgiveness. 1. Where do you turn? (vs. 1-4) 2. How do you respond? (vs. 5-12) 3. A Contrast in Character, 1 Kings 22:29–53
10/11/2019Though Ahab will die as result of his sin, his son Ahaziah does not turn from his father’s evil ways. Jehoshaphat, on the other hand, sought to do “what was right in the sight of the Lord” (1 Kings 22:3b). Jehoshaphat’s example shows us that it is possible to live rightly before God even in a day when others do not. God’s judgment (vs. 29-40) a. Ahab’s arrogance (vs. 29-31) b. His inevitable end (vs. 32-36) c. A complex obituary (vs. 37-40) 2. Our hope (vs. 41-50) 3. The False Prophets, 1 Kings 22:1–28
03/11/2019After three years of peace with Syria, Ahab joins with Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, to retake the city of Ramoth-Gilead. But not before, at Jehoshaphat’s insistence, they inquire of the Lord. Sadly, Ahab still depends on his false prophets for guidance while Jehoshaphat seeks a true prophet for direction. 1. The Spiral into Sin, 1 Kings 21:1–29
27/10/2019When Ahab and Jezebel mercilessly steal a man’s vineyard, Elijah returns to the scene to condemn their actions. Though Ahab had historically ignored God’s commands and warnings, at this condemnation he humbles himself and is sorry. While he cannot reverse God’s judgements against him, God does spare him from seeing disaster in his days. 1. The covetous king (vs. 1-4) 2. The wrong kind of spouse (vs. 5-7) 3. Not the Only One, 1 Kings 20:1–43
20/10/2019While Elijah confidently and bravely spoke for the Lord, he was not the only prophet in Israel. When Ben-Hadad, the king of Syria, threatens Israel God raises up another prophet to help guide Israel to victory. Unfortunately, contrary to God’s direction, Ahab will spare Ben-Hadad’s life and, in doing so, bring God’s judgement upon himself. 1. False Sources of Confidence (vs. 1-12) 2.
