Our Christian liberty is often a topic of great dispute and personal opinion. However, in 1 Cor 8-10, Paul uses a cultural illustration that offers 5 key life principles for making decisions in this area of our Christian liberty in regard to actions and behaviors. The life we are called to live in Christ is not one that will occur naturally to us. It is a gift of grace and requires a conscious decision “training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age” (Titus 2:12). Sound doctrine should lead to right behavior, and in Titus 2:1-10 the apostle Paul gives specific instruction for various groups within the church. While it can be counter-cultural to modern ears, Paul’s direction finds its foundation in the gospel itself and highlights the behaviors that make not only families strong, but creates churches that point an unbelieving world to Jesus. 1. False teachers on the island of Crete were threatening the young churches. While they professed to know God, they denied him by their works (Titus 1:16) and the apostle Paul instructs Titus to “rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith” (Titus 1:13). In this passage Paul outlines his motivation for mission and invites us all to join him. He is motivation is rooted in the grace of God, and he is moved to reach those who have not heard of the finished work of Christ on the cross. He does this by both word and deed depending upon the power of the Holy Spirit (v. 18-19). On the first day of the week, faithful women purchase spices and make their way to Jesus’ tomb to anoint him. Jesus Christ was crucified and took the penalty for the sins of the world upon himself. By his death we are offered access to God through faith. Jesus’ trial before the Jewish Sanhedrin was a gross miscarriage of justice. Wrongly convicted of blasphemy, he is condemned to death and handed over to the Romans. The disciples seek to make preparations for the celebration of the Passover and Jesus foretells of his coming betrayal.
