Open Metalcast Episode #137: Chapter's End
19/09/2016I got off my schedule for releasing episodes, so this episode is a little late. It also comes on the heels of me losing my job, so some of the tracks reflect my mood. We have brand new Colosso from their album Obnoxious (which is anything but, and shows a music unit tightening up their already tight sound). There's also music from Patrons, Within Destruction, offense, Jack's Slave, Lunarscathe, Black Monolith, and Rock Heroes. It may be the end of a chapter for me, but here's to the next chapter and more metal to come! (00:11) To Purify by Colosso from Obnoxious (BY-NC-ND) (03:47) Tři Závěti by Patrons of The Rotting Gate from The Rose Coil (BY-SA) (11:19) Plague of Immortality (Feat. Open Metalcast Episode #134: Short on Words, Long on Metal
02/08/2016Trying to finish up this episode before heading to bed (which tends to be a theme, as I try to get these out before I hit the hay). Decided to start this episode with some of the more epic tracks and mix things up a bit. We have the first two tracks from Aktarum's Game of Trolls, followed by a soaring track from Skyforest. Then we finish off the set with the epical tale of Daedalus and his ingenious wings which doomed his son when the son flew too close to the sun. And then four crushing tracks by Chamber of Rotrute, Depths of Black, Rebel Wizard and Sysmo Finish off the second act. And you won't want to miss the post-metal track by Wreck and Reference that sounds both unique and familiar and downright good. It's a show you won't want to miss! Open Metalcast Episode #132: Thank you for being a fan
21/06/2016One thing that most bands will tell you is that they keep making music for their fans. That's true of podcasts as well. You're part of the reason I do this podcast. Yes you, the one with the really neat smartphone. And you, the one who listens on the website. And I see you, site that re-broadcasts our content. Seriously, it's because of you that we all keep doing this. So give yourself a pat on the back for being awesome. Because if it weren't for you I'd be playing this all by my lonesome. Kudos! We have a great show lined up for you, including new music from Fall of Man, Red Raw, Kudai, Subterranean Disposition, Defying, Holistic Hobos, Mesmer, and Dr. Zilog. It's a mixture of metal I hope you enjoy and share with your friends. Open Metalcast Episode #129: Traditional / Experimental
10/05/2016While the Open Metalcast interns scour the net for Creative Commons Metal Music (contrary to popular belief it's not just one person searching Bandcamp on the Monday Evening before the show drops. Nope, not that at all) we've noticed a lot of tags for the music we find. One tag that can be a mixed bag is "experimental", which can lead to some truly unique music, or can lead to something that sounds akin to, well, something else. Fortunately our crack team of interns (and not one guy on a Monday Evening) have steeled him, er, themselves against such sonic barrages to bring you the finest in Creative Commons Metal Music. Plus we have some straight up metal to punish your earholes. We have tracks from Maleceptor, Back to R'lyeh, VII ARC, Goatfather, La Agonía de Vivir, The Grajo side of the latest ATAVISMO & GRAJO split, Batchlight, and Cratylik Feat BassToss. We can't thank our interns enough for taking a few hits here and there for the team, and once we clean up the mess maybe we can have some more. (00:1

Open Metalcast Episode #128: Unintended acts of human kindness
27/04/2016This week I got a strange note from one of my friends who wondered if I was moving in. Apparently on my recent order of CDs from Hypnotic Dirge Records I accidentally left it on the last shipping address I used. That address was his address from when I last sent him some CDs for Christmas. I had a few moments of confusion until I realized what was going on. But it all worked out because these were albums that I know he'd like anyway, so in a way it was an unintended act of human kindness. So Hypnotic Dirge Records got another order from me, and my friend got some amazing music. The moral of the story? Buy more music, share more music, and support the bands you love, even if it's unintentional. What is intentional is the collection of tracks we have for you this episode. We have tracks from Shardana, The Look of Time, Twisted Wrath, Negative Voice, Mahidevran, and a brand new track from SUNNATA. Send them to all of your friends who will listen (and the friends who won't listen. ;) ). (00:10) Shardana (Kadesh)

Open Metalcast Episode #127: No Limits
12/04/2016One of the best parts of doing a podcast about Creative Commons Metal Music is I'm only answerable to you, the fans. I don't have to try to fit my show into pre-constrained time limits, and I don't have to fit the songs around commercials. And because it isn't over the air I don't have to make ham-fisted attempts at bleeping things out that might offend sensitive ears. It's just you and me sharing music the way music should be shared; among people who care about the music and the bands who make it. This episode features a brand-new EP from show-favorites Wildernessking, (who apparently don't rest in South Africa ;) ). We also have new music from Reliever, Reluctant Mortem, The Sad Bastard Book Club, Totem Skin, WendigoPsychosis, and Pyramidal. And the Open Metalcast Vaults found a neglected track from Dead in Montana. So do your part and download this episode to see how far you can push your limits. And do your friends a favor and share with them as well. (00:10) So Be It by Reliever from Exile (BY) (05:00)

Open Metalcast Episode #126: Good Looking Music
30/03/2016One of the things that I really enjoy about putting together Open Metalcast episodes is picking up music from around the globe. There's a ton of bands putting out not only amazing music but also amazing physical musical artifacts to enjoy. One band in particular is Psygnosis with their latest album: "AAliens". The artwork on this LP is amazing, and a lot of thought and care went into putting this together. I also picked up "Exist" by Cyranoi, which comes in a beautiful digipack CD case with great music and great artwork to boot. And even though not every band puts out physical media there's still a lot of care that goes into producing artwork to catch the most jaded metal fan's eye. Do yourself a favor and click on the links below. There's a lot of work that goes into making these albums, and I'm sure Psygnosis, dOwnhill, Domestic Terror, Decaying Continuum, Cover of Night, Involución, Moron, and Cyranoi would appreciate it if you not only gave their albums a peek, but also a listen. Hopefully this show will

Open Metalcast Episode #125: One, Two, Five
15/03/2016One thing that I didn't miss while Open Metalcast was on hiatus was writing the short blurb that precedes the listing of tracks in the show notes. Part of that is because sometimes I don't have much to add to an already great set of music. And this show is no exception, with tracks from Rain On Their Parade, Goliath, Muldjord, Broken God, Icarus Crash and Separate Sun. Plus we have one more track from the Apierogon album by Polygons. But the main reason I don't like writing these is because I have to come up with superlatives for songs like Apocalyptic Witchcraft by show-favorite Petrychor. And really, how much more can you say about a band that can craft 26 minutes of black metal and still keep your attention? You'd be overdrawn from the superlative bank and have to see a teller to take a loan out. So rather than read me try to sell you on listening to this episode I think we'd both be happier if you just download episode 125 of Open Metalcast and we'll call it even. No charge; just the finest Creative Commo

Open Metalcast Episode #124: Returning We Hear the Metal
01/03/2016Eight months ago Open Metalcast went on hiatus. The short of it was because my father-in-law was needing more elder care and we needed to shore up resources for his care. Unfortunately he passed away last year. This show is dedicated to him, even though he likely never heard it or knew it existed. We miss you, Dad. So I have eight months to catch up on of sharing Creative Commons Metal Music with you. Let's get started with music from Phylogeny, The Afterthought Ecstasty, Sonus Mortis, Wildernessking, Negative Voice, Akaitsuki, two tracks from EWÏG FROST, and Lèpoka. It's good to be back, though I wish it were under better circumstances. Open Metalcast Episode #123: Five Years Young
19/08/2015Open Metalcast was released five years ago on August 17th, 2010 and we thought it would be a great idea to do something special for you our faithful listeners and aficionados of Creative Commons Metal Music. So we got thinking: what could we do to show you how much we love you, the audience, and do something special to celebrate this momentous occasion. Five hours of music? A track from all of the bands we've played on this show? Severed Fifth's Jono Bacon parachuting into each and every one of your homes? While we chucked around these amazing (and somewhat scary) ideas we decided to do the one thing that keeps you coming back for mote: keep bringing you great Creative Commons licensed metal music. We've got tracks from Kekal, Panchita la Pistolera, A Grave On Mars, Death of a Poet, Othismos Another Destiny Project, Throne of Malediction, Let It Flow, Did You Just Hex Me?, Betrayal, and BlackStar. So rather than serve us restraining orders or testing your intestinal fortitude we'll serve up 50 minutes of crus

Open Metalcast Episode #122: Don't know when to stop
05/08/2015Ever have one of those days where you just want to keep the music going and don't want it to stop? That's what happened with this episode. It's understandable when you have such great bands as deafheaven, Eschatos, Seal Of Beleth, Beastmaker, Fodastic Brenfers, KDC, Rebel Wizard, Envig, Azgard, and Vinnum Sabbathi in your playlist. Heck, you just forget to stop the music and announce all of the great songs until the very end of the episode. Well, maybe you might. Not that I'm speaking from experience here, but sometimes the music just flows so perfectly you don't want it to stop and you can't figure out where to stop. So sit back and enjoy the episode and relax: I couldn't figure out where to stop either. Open Metalcast Episode #121: Shuffle mode
21/07/2015Ever have one of those days where you just decide to put your entire library on shuffle and see what happens? That's what happened with this episode. I narrowed down the library to just the Creative Commons Metal Music, turned on shuffle and hit "play". What you're hearing is a (mostly) shuffled version of what is in the Open Metalcast archives. This episode has a mix of different artists, featuring Colosso, Aborym, Exiled From Eden, Trocotombix, Black Autumn, Pr4nA, The Foetal Mind, Frozen Dust, Petrychor, Concatenate, Omainen, and Thou. Some of these haven't been on the show in a while and others are more recent. So sit back and let the realm of randomness take you on an hour-long journey of Creative Commons Metal Music.
