  • Open Metalcast Episode #120: Live until 120

    07/07/2015

Browsing through Wikipedia for subjects for titles for the show I stumbled upon something I didn't know (isn't that always the case with Wikipedia?) Apparently Moses lived to be 120 years old. So the way to wish someone long life would be "Live until 120" Which is apropos for the 120th episode of our long-running podcast bringing you the finest in Creative Commons metal music (with no end in sight, knock on IKEA desk). This episode brings us the other half of the HELA / LODO split with a track from LODO, as well as tracks from Humanity Defiled, Unholy Quest, Немiга, Grimalkin, Extincion, Soundcrafters, and Sallow. Just remember to listen at respectable volumes so when you turn 120 you can still listen to this great music. • Open Metalcast Episode #119: Works of Fire

    23/06/2015

Tonight was the Windsor–Detroit International Freedom Festival, AKA "The Fireworks". Unfortunately we're also getting some bad weather in this area so they did the fireworks earlier than normal. What does that have to do with this show? Not a damn thing. But what this show does have is nine spectacular songs hidden inside it's encoded bits, including tracks from Ósserp, TEETHING, HOT SKULL, Black Autumn, Rain On Their Parade, Thicket, ROSY FINCH, and B.I.T.E. So if you see flashes before your eyes and hear cracking noises it's probably not the fireworks but the sound of your head banging along with these tracks. And now you know. (00:10) Heretant enemics by Ósserp from Sang i Sutge LP (BY-ND) (03:46) We Were Friends by TEETHING from Ralph EP (BY-NC-ND) (05:12) Loneliness by HOT SKULL from Melancholy Blossoms (BY-NC-ND) (07:31) 'Tis Roock, 'Tis Enckel Wint by Black Autumn from Black Autumn / Veldes - Split (BY-NC-SA) (13:02) Old World Blues, New World Hope by Rain On Their Parade from Wonderlights (BY-NC-ND)

  • Open Metalcast Episode #118: 15 minutes or more of fame

    09/06/2015

This week I'll be seeing Rush in concert for their 40th anniversary tour. One of the reasons Rush is one of my favorite bands is they bucked the trends. On the album 2112 they released the now legendary concept track "2112" which clocked in at over 20 minutes. This was despite their label stating they didn't want any more concept songs. Despite this the album is now regarded as a cultural treaure in Canada and the band is still going strong 40 years later. So much for listening to the conventional wisdom. All of the tracks in this episode are over 15 minutes in length as a tribute to all of the bands that buck the trends, ignore conventional wisdom, and play the music they want to play. This episode features tracks from Cementerio, Doodsangst, NUTRITION, Schattenbrandung, Deep Space Destructors, and Psygnosis. So poke a finger in the eye of the collectivist mentality and treat yourself over an hour and a half of the best Creative Commons music the net has to offer. • Open Metalcast Episode #117: Technical Difficulties Be Damned

    26/05/2015

Ah the joys of computers. Can't really do a show without one but damned if this computer wasn't being a bit of a pain in the ass by filling up the root partition (and of course not telling me until it completely shit the bed in the process). But with things mostly back to normal we can talk about the amazing episode we have lined up for your ears. We have new tracks from Shooter, Vemm, and Bolesno Grinje, Lux, Evacuate The City, Afterwind, and Alturuk, as well as brand new material from Galactic Pegasus (which was sent to me by a fan of the show through Bandcamp. Thank you so much!). So while computers can be a pain to work with they rare one of the best ways to listen to this show. • Open Metalcast Episode #116: Larks Returning

    12/05/2015

Some sad news to report with this episode. Apparently the album “Larks” is the last “Returning We Hear the Larks” album for the foreseeable future. But “Larks” is an excellent album comprising of re-recorded versions of popular songs spanning the … Continue reading →

  • Open Metalcast Episode #114: The Spaces In-Between

    18/03/2015

This episode we decided instead of our normal format we'd try something similar to our neglected (and long overdue) Instrumetalcast episodes and just let the music play straight through. Part of this was tracks selected for this episode lent themselves better to being played with just enough space left in-between them to breathe. This episode features an amazing line-up of tracks from Frigoris, Doodsangst, Odradek Room, Lotus Eater, The Scimitar, WOHEDNESS, Ladder Devils, Screaming At The Sun, and finishes up with the latest from Palm Desert. It's a mix of blackened death metal and doom that breathes best with a pair of headphones. • Open Metalcast Episode #113: Title Goes Here

    04/03/2015

It's late here at the Open Metalcast headquarters and we're getting ready to release another jam-packed episode of some of the most crushing Creative Commons metal the world has ever heard. All that stands between us and heading to bed is coming up with a description of what treasures await you in this episode. But how do you describe 9 tracks of the best in Creative Commons Metal? You could start by listing off each of the bands that contribute their amazing music to form a Voltron-esque colossus of metal: Unholy Quest, Omnioid, Azgard, Rotten Casket, Norilsk, Atten Ash, Forgenheim, Concrete Foundation, and Avenger Kills. You could mention that this episode is 45 minutes of head-crushing metal. And you could mention that the bands really need your support to continue making this music. That would do it. Hey, it looks like we already wrote up our description and introduction. Woo hoo! Now if only people will download and share this episode so everyone will know what great Creative Commons Metal Music sounds l

  • Open Metalcast Episode #112: Frostburnt

    17/02/2015

Here at Open Metalcast Headquarters we're well in the throes of the six more weeks of winter some fucking rodent predicted. Much like watery tarts distributing swords is no basis for a system of government, determining the length of winter based on rodent vision is... huh? What do you mean Groundhog Day was two weeks ago? And we're already well past Twelfth Night, Valentine's day, and Presidents Day too? Hell, before you know it we'll be cursing at egg-and-chocolate-shitting bunnies. But what's always timeless is the great metal we have for you this episode, including the long-awaited new album from Lords of the Trident, as well as the latest from Satyrasis, Kolony, Encircle, Norilsk, and Unholy Quest. We also have music from Psygnosis, and a EP that was released earlier this year by Black Autumn. It's the perfect mix of Creative Commons metal that you won't want to let slip away. (00:11) Waltz for a Marionette by Satyrasis from ...Of The Dead (BY-NC-SA) (08:28) Sledge That Shit by Kolony from Sledge (BY-SA)

  • Open Metalcast Episode #111: Eleventy One

    03/02/2015

Welcome friends to the eleventy-first episode of Open Metalcast, a rather respectable episode number for a podcast. We also managed to get a respectable amount of snow outside the Open Metalcast headquarters, which unfortunately meant a lot of shoveling because SOMEONE never decided to pick up a snow blower for such occasions. Apparently he was too busy picking out great Creative Metal music for this episode including tracks from Savagery, Afterwind, Osmium Guillotine, Archonaut, Æons Collide, HELA, Sarin, HELLIÖN, and Peculate. There's almost an hour's worth of music in this episode; perfect for that longer morning commute or for when you're trying to push your way out of the snow-covered driveway. Whatever your weather patterns though you'll find great music waiting for you in this episode. • Open Metalcast Episode #109: No Quarter

If you're anything like us at the Open Metalcast Headquarters you've had it up to your eyeballs with the shitty covers that pass for Christmas music. • Open Metalcast Episode #108: Remembering legends

    09/12/2014

This week not only marked the 10th anniversary of Dimebag Darerel's death (which seems like it was only yesterday) but also the passing of one of the legends of video games: Ralph Baer. Were it not for the innovations of both Dimebag and Ralph Baer the world would never have known the amazing music of Pantera, and the video game industry as we know it might never have happened. What does this have to do with the show? Not a damn thing but as someone who grew up on games and metal it felt important enough to mention. What this episode does have though is some of the finest Creative Commons metal the net has to offer, such as Vicky Polard, Fitcage, The Departed, Bloodhunter, Dystrophya, Proyecto Hombre, Offense, and Lou Quinse. So share this episode, support the bands, and remember those who made the things you love. • Open Metalcast Episode #107: Post-Turkey Sleep Disorder

    02/12/2014

It's the week after Thanksgiving here at OMC headquarters and we couldn't be happier to have yet-another-holiday in the rear-view mirror. Not that we didn't have fun with Thanksgiving, but the lead-up to getting things sorted meant this episode is dropping one week later than it should be. And if you're anything like us you're still recovering from day n+1 of leftovers. But never fear freedom-loving metalheads, because we've lined up some music to help ween you back from your turkey-induced comas and kick you back into high gear. And what a collection of music to give thanks for, including brand new music from Cloudkicker (apparently not content with only releasing the brilliant Live with Intronaut album last week). This episode also features music from 100 Veces Fauna, Mursa, Nightosaur, Show Me a Dinosaur, Underthals, remastered Oak Pantheon, and the triumphant return of Drakum. • Open Metalcast Episode #106: Wikipedia Fail

    11/11/2014

It's no secret I find writing the introductions to these episodes the hardest part of creating the episode. The music has never been a problem as evidenced by the 8 tracks featured in the show. Nope, the worst part is trying to come up with something witty and wonderful to tempt you, the reader, into downloading this episode (which you very well should as there's 30 minutes of great Creative Commons Metal Music waiting for you at that handy little download link. And I've mentioned one of my tricks for finding ideas for the episode text comes from Wikipedia. Well, it appears the only interesting things happening around the number 106 are related not-particularly-interesting years in the Roman Empire. And while that might be interesting to some folks I'm not prepared to go into any great depth about how year 106 brought the Indian ambassador to Rome. No matter how you slice it that's not going to be terribly interesting at all. A better use of that attention would be checking out the tracks from Raide Mort, Tra

  • Open Metalcast Episode #105: Analysis Paralysis

    28/10/2014

Ever felt like you can't make a decision about something? That happened to me recently when trying to put together this show. It seems October is the month where a lot of bands release their music so I had over 20 tracks set up to play in this show. I couldn't decide which ones to put into the final show so I made some tough choices and bumped some tracks to future episodes. But talk about being spoiled for choice! There's new music from show-favorites Memest, along with new music from Delyria, Deathsurrection, Colorblind, Narada, Phthartic, Sunnata, and Híbrido. Hopefully you won't have as hard a choice to decide to listen to this episode as they're all great bands with stellar tracks waiting to pummel your ears. • Open Metalcast Episode #104: Drawing a blank

    01/10/2014

Ever have one of those weeks where you completely blank out on something that you need to do but can't for the life of you remember what that was? Unfortunately I completely blanked out on releasing the latest episode of Open Metalcast for most of September. Whoops. But in that time bands have released an amazing amount of music; enough for several shows. So I apologize for the delay but hopefully the music will more than make up for it. First up is the straight-up thrash of Nuclear, followed by the amazing talents of Latvian band Deodium. Fallen to Flux winds up the first set and then Nami brings the progressive death metal while Mystic Place winds alternative and progressive rock together into an amazing combination. Black Autumn's latest release "Losing the Sun" finds us navigating the doom-laden reaches of the brilliant M. Krall. Destierro drag us back into thrash territory, and Echovolt charges forth with industrial-strength metal that will, well, blow you away. Winding up this episode is Magma Dragon fe

  • Open Metalcast Episode #103: Labor Pains Redux

    02/09/2014

Over in the USA we're coming off of celebrating Labor Day which is a day where some folks get to they day off while others get to go in to work. It's a crazy little holiday but it gave me some extra time to peruse the net for the best in Creative Commons Licensed Metal Music. And we have a great episode lined up with music from Legions, Cleaver, Storm Cry, Ancient Emblem, Catapult The Dead, Deep Sea Thunder Beast, Lucifer In The Sky With Diamonds, Schematics for Gravity, and Cryogen Second. So whether you're returning to work or haven't left you'll have plenty to keep your ears busy. • Open Metalcast Episode #102: Party Tardy

    20/08/2014

Things have been rather busy a the Open Metalcast Headquarters as of late. We had one of the storms of the century rip through our neighborhood last week. Fortunately we didn't have too much damage but we still had to do some impromptu moving of some waterlogged stuff. We're just getting things back to some semblance of normal around here, which means we're ready to bring you the Creative Commons Metal Music you crave. We have brand new Deep Space Destructors off of their cleverly named album III, as well as a long-overdue appearance by GUM. Throw in new tracks from Acherontia, LeHunt, X-ethos, Old Enemies, and Abriosis and you'll have plenty of metal to share with your friends. Plus a surprise re-appearance by Drakum (last seen in episode 39) with a re-interpretation of their classic track "Around the Oak" rounds things off. Sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for after all. (00:10) A Gathering by Oak Pantheon from Gathering (BY-NC-ND) (06:33) Repudiate The Lies by Abriosis from Tattered And
