Today we are facing a situation in which many churches are falling prey to contemporary cultural and political ideologies and stamping a Jesus sticker on it and claiming to be faithful. And because the church is typically associated with general goodness and truth-telling, many well-meaning people are falling hook, line, and sinker into destructive worldviews that, instead of saving them, will, in reality, send them to hell. And in our passage, Paul warns Timothy that not only is the substance of the false teachings distributed among the flock at Ephesus flat out wrong, but they are also actually demonic in their source. That sounds about as shocking today as it did back then. But, as we look at this passage today, we are going to find that false teaching isn’t a tacky preference for people wanting their ears tickled, it is a deadly poison that must be called out and recalibrated.
