The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is the third Poirot novel from Agatha Christie, and it was very well accepted and highly acclaimed. The Society of Crime Writers awarded it with "Best Crime Novel Ever Written". These two chapters are a little slow so have some patience-Twin is trying to give us some lessons in economics- that being that one dollar in one economy might be considered very little- yet in another that same dollar is considered a fortune. Think of the North vs The South in the Civil War, In the south, a wheelbarrow of paper money was worth next to nothing, while in the North, a couple dollars could buy you some clothing. Hank (the Boss) could be a hero and a bum at the same time- and Chapter v32 is a good example. Chapter 31- The Boss (Hank) and his host Marco stroll through a village and Hank is fascinated by the way Marco treats different classes of people. Then Hank invites other tradesmen to dine at Marco's house. Hank claims the King is a farmer named Jones Chapter 32- At the dinner Hank spends money like there is no tomorrow in the eyes of those present-To them 4 dollars seems like millions. As the Boss and The King travel through the king's land the King is witness to the tyranny and despair his subjects have to face- and literally sees them chased and hung and starved and imprisoned by nobles for no good reason- yet the King can't comprehend that there is anything wrong with any of that. Twain's mastery at depicting the evils of a monarchy and caste system is unequalled here. These are two remarkable chapters in my opinion and here's why: In chapter 21 The Boss comes upon a long line of slaves consisting of men, women, and children, and describes in no uncertain terms the horror and sadness of their situation. This should dispel any doubts modern readers/listeners might have about Twain's view of slavery; in chapter 22 The Boss finally realizes how much he appreciates the abilities of Sandy, who, in spite of her long, long descriptions, can provide accurate depictions of wars, genealogies, and histories like no other person.
