He keeps a low profile on purpose because he prefers being heard and not seen. Although he has played for many famous people, he loves living a life where, once the party is over, he literally blends back in to a modest everyday life, recognized by no one...except those with discerning ears.Marv loves music. His pursuits to share his affinity for celebratory music that enlivens, emboldens and inspires is his motivation. His first goal when he began to DJ was to make a mixed cassette tape that would be enjoyed so much that people would copy it for their friends and encourage them to listen to it. Caring nothing about earning cash, at first, Marv just wanted to be heard and shared.Marv's earnest approach to DJing included respecting the craft and developing his skill so that he would be heard and regarded as a 'real DJ' (based on old-school definitions: Seamless mixing of his great record/music collection, flow and ability to read crowds). Marv's attention to performance detail combined with an open mind about including off-chart music in his repertoire caught the attention of a few major players in the music, fashion and television industry. In 1995, Terry Lewis (of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis) gave Marv, who was employee of his Perspective Records label, the chance to play a warm up set at a venue called Tramps for the band Mint Condition. The owner of Tramps approached Marv about being the opening DJ for shows that featured 'urban' music and Marv got to open for artists ranging from Erykah Badu to George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic to the Fugees, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Chic, Rick James and Outkast.Marv solidified his status as the in-house DJ for Tramps and that led to an opportunity to work on a legendary night that would introduce him to many elites in the entertainment industries. Prince had a show at Madison Square Garden and he'd set up an after party and jam session to take place at Tramps and Marv was there to keep the crowd happy while they waited a couple of hours for Prince to arrive. In the crowd was a vice-president at Viacom who connected with Marv, and soon, Marv was playing at events for MTV, VH1 and Nickelodeon.Since Marv essentially leapfrogged the club scene and found favor in New York's special events industry, Marv never pursued gigs at large and popular clubs. Since Marv didn't feel good about being part of bottle service club scenes where people paid as much as they would to take a vacation, for one night out - Marv chose to play at modes

  • The Wire - The HBO Series 4th Season Premiere Party '08

    31/12/2010 Duración: 01h19min

With a party that's much more sophisticated than the scenes depicted in the show, this season's party started with a nod to the grown folks in the cast. Later there were sounds for the new youthful cast members that Season 4 focused on. One of my strategies when playing is to get everyone in the room involved by touching them musically. Some think, reasonably so, that the older generation is irrelevant in a party scene...play that new stuff and the geezers just gotta deal (or are invisible). It's hard for me not to see people that I admire. If you've been here longer than me and you have some exceptional accomplishments - I love you and you matter! At some point at everything I do, there's a 'here's to you' moment for my living legends in the house. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrD2172EkF4 Starting with some un(familiar) songs this blend moves quickly into NYC garage classics. Hip Hop came after Funk, Soul, & Disco, & Jazz so generally, in my sets, Hip Hop comes after all that's played. Tracklisting fort

  • An R&B groover mix for a Lennox Lewis/HBO reception

    31/12/2010 Duración: 01h19min

HBO is also a network for boxing. I can't recall who was fighting but I got the call that Lennox Lewis was attending and wanted to host a really short meet & greet out in Vegas. It's a long way and a lot of pay for a DJ to do 2 hours so HBO rang and asked me if I could help out with music. I was told that Lennox was into what's known as Neo-Soul, especially Maxwell and Jill Scott, here's the mix. • APT AP10th 04 - Qool DJ Marv LIVE!

    31/12/2010 Duración: 01h16min

One of my career shaping/enhancing venues because this place had an open format. The DJs who played there played different (meaning not the same ole same ole - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy39w7YDQsk) This is one of many recordings from APT - I would to record my 5 hour entire set and any hour could be used as a LIVE mix CD. I got into putting out live mixes as a 'separate the men from the boys' self promo tactic because anybody can make a good mix at home, using a computer, rehearsing, re-starting, editing until just right...but then what happens when they play live? Exposed. To be honest, I'd record primarily to play back while walking the streets of NYC or riding the subways and I'd listen for where I could improve. Hold a mix a little longer - don't chop off lyrics - bring in that next beat a little stronger...and when I'd playback and was pleased, I decided to start the LIVE! mix series. Play back one of your nights, would you dance/groove to you? Music by Thievery Corporation, DJ Krush, Romanowsk

  • The Grand Classic Sounds of New York (Qool DJ Marv's Director's Cut)

    17/11/2010 Duración: 01h51min

I love those classic New York movies that have scenes where someone’s keeping their night going by heading to a friend’s afterparty and when they walk in, there’s a mini-jazz orchestra providing the grooves. This is happening in someone’s apartment! The bandleader with the baton bopping with a welcoming smile. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOlpcJhNyDI&feature=related I’ve never had the pleasure but I recently read in Stanley Crouch collection of essays called Considering Genius that Wynton Marsalis gets down like that for real, presently. This is an I Love New York mix that I got commissioned to compile by a special events consultant extraordinaire (Bowen & Company) that was organizing an affair involving the unveiling of a new Trump Tower penthouse suite. A nice new place was on display and my job here was to give the room a classic and grand sound. I’ve got a real soft spot for singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra and for jazz in general so this was one of those ‘they pay me to do this(?)’ k

  • Jazzy Vibes of Latin America - A Qool DJ Marv Live Set of Latin Jazz, Salsa, Cuban & more

    11/11/2010 Duración: 03h21min

Latin Jazz and Salsa music recorded in September 2010 in a Manhattan loft space for a company's end of summer soiree...I mean, fiesta! Mostly unmixed because many of these songs end cold (meaning that they don't fade out). If you play good songs, and they end cold, let them be. When they finish, you'll find that you can continue on with a similar vibe, or you can change tempo, or you can change music altogether...letting a song end is actually one of the more thoughtful and satisfactory segues. Clocking in at 3 hours, you can feel tropical, practice your salsa dance, or just plain enjoy the virtuosity of these musicians. I love the bright horns and the endless percussion that fills every crevice in the sound. And Latin music also, in my humble opinion, has the most warm bass sound in recorded music. Cuban, Colombian, Puerto Rican, Brazilian, Dominican sounds and more. (Feel free to comment if I miss any culture) 1. Eddie Palmieri - Slowvisor 2. Paul Desmond - Samba D'Orpheu 3. Poncho Sanchez - Bien Sabro

  • What Happens When Miles Davis and John Coltrane Step to the Stage at a Thelonious Monk Performance? Qool DJ Marv Mixes Jazz

    10/10/2010 Duración: 37min

What Happens When Miles Davis and John Coltrane Step to the Stage at a Thelonious Monk Performance? That's the question I posed while listening to a set of Jazz CDs sent to me by the people behind http://www.yourfriendorfoe.com/. Originally conceived to be a stream/download on the Friend or Foe website, this 37 minute mix, designed to feel like an actual live Jazz club performance, is now available here for you to add to your collection. 10/10/10 is what I would give each one of these Jazz giants on that mythical scale. October 10th is also Thelonious Monk's birthday. My son's name is Thelonious and that's him in the photo practicing piano (on a synthesizer - look at the photo frame on his left to see the concentration in his eyes). His lessons are on a real piano. Need I say more? Just a little...I wrote a great story about this mix for their site but when the site changed, away it went and so did my words. I found a few on the music blog of a NYC man about town & here's a copy & paste: “I hope this ja

  • Arthur Ashe Celebration @ Phat Farm/Baby Phat Soho Store in Soho NYC

    07/06/2010 Duración: 01h41min

100% vinyl set with a literal theme - grace and elegance. Not much more to be said about the late Arthur Ashe. I can't recall if I got to shake his hand when he came to Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism in 1993 to lecture but I was there soaking in the wisdom. This party was actually for the launch of footwear produced by Run from Run-DMC. Mr. Ashe's wife Jean was in attendance and this set pretty much was for her. A nice listen for burgeoning DJs who care to hear how records made by musicians are mixed. Mixing drum machine records is less difficult. Thanks to the Simmons family and my bud L'Mani because this set was spun on his turntables that evening. http://www.arthurashe.org/site/ http://www.denverpost.com/spears/ci_6293422 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIB5VH3h6vA&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4vlFQA-t9w&feature=PlayList&p=ECC5BA59FE7CBE9A&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=29
