While on honeymoon in Kenmare in the late seventies her husband George asked her to make a diversion to the small little village of Crookhaven, the most southerly point of Ireland. Whatever it was about this special place, Claire was hooked and shortly after she moved here and bought the famous Marconi House, the home of Gugliamo Marconi, the father of wireless, which became her home and then her business,  Claire shares her colourful story as well as having a big conversation about happy beans and sad beans.     On Friday the 23rd of March, 2006 17 year old Johnny Quaid fell off a roof while collecting his jacket after work from the building site where he was working. Two weeks later, Johnny eventually woke up from a coma in the Mater Hospital with no recollection at all of what had happened. While recovering he quickly learnt that he would never regain the use of his legs as a result of a spinal injury. In part one of this two part podcast Johnny chats about his love of Gaelic football, of going to New York to live the American dream and how he coped with knowing that life was going to be radically different. He chats about his “sick or swim” mentality and the support of family, friends and the community in his home village of Athea in West Limerick. Mary has spent 30 years with An Garda Síochána, a career that saw her progress through the ranks to the position of Detective Inspector, looking after the Protective Services unit, dealing with the worst of abuse and sexual crimes. Mary’s son Aaron is a vibrant young man with down syndrome and this led to Mary getting deeply involved with Down Syndrome Ireland, campaigning for basic rights for people with down syndrome.  A car accident a couple of years ago turned her busy life upside down, leaving her with a broken neck and facing a long recovery period, which she is still in the middle of. While extremely traumatic, this accident forced her to look at life through a different lens and also gave her a chance to begin to recover from the vicarious trauma of such a mentally draining job.
