She talks about how independence at an early allowed her to flourish and start her medical journey at a younger age than most of her peers. We also talk about the importance of balance during the medical journey and how the medical environment enforces the thought that grades mean everything at the expense of personal development.   • Episode 34-No Hair! No Problem! Maintaining Healthy Hair with Hair Transplant Surgeon and Dermatologist, Dr. Ekpo

    On this episode, Dr. Ekpo, a hair transplant specialist and dermatologist talks about how to maintain healthy hair particularly in communities of color. We dispel some of the myth as it pertains to hair growth and how hair loss is irrevocably connected to your psychological and physical state. We discuss some of the more common dermatologic diseases which affect black people such as CCA ( central centrifugal cicatrical alopecia) and how hair loss can occur from two general processes, scarring vs non-scarring. We answer the question of are relaxers and perming safe? How often do you need to shampoo? Are natural shampoo and hair products better than non-natural hair products?   • Episode 33- SPECIAL EDITION! Acknowledging the Mamba's Way 8/24, A tribute to the late Kobe Bryant

    As today is 8/24, Mamba day, it is only right that we celebrate an individual who captivated the world through his grit, determination and relentless work ethic. The numbers 8 and 24 were on one of the most prolific NBA players to have graced the court, Kobe Bryant. Beyond basketball, he was a transcendent who helped to transform his community in a multitude of ways from coaching his daughter's AAU team to writing a screenplay which he won an Oscar for. On this episode, we talk about the impact Kobe had on on the world and in particular on us. We discuss how his death curated an environment for people of all ages, demographics, creeds to come together and recognize the meaning of love and adoration. Nonetheless, we also talk about how his death shifted a narrative about how black men mourn. Is it ok to be emotionally vulnerable and admit your feelings? We discuss how fatherhood was such a important component of his life and how it impacted my guest, Jamal in his own role as a father of two beautiful children.

We also talk about the feelings of inadequacy as a resident and what are the best things to look for when applying to residency programs. She offers tips on how to successfully apply and how her untraditional journey brought her to the pediatric wards.  She also offers resources/tips  which can help with child rearing during this pandemic.We talk about about how she is moving forward with motivating minorities into medicine with the organization NEXTGEN pediatrics.
