London Calling was the third record from The Clash which saw them depart further from punk's rigid structure and challenge the genre as a whole. With Californication, the Chilli Peppers were looking to find their footing again after a poorly received 'One Hot Minute'. Bringing back John Frusciante as lead guitar for this album gave them a canvas they all needed to work off of and leading to a second rise of the RHCP.
