Vin and Spook crouch on a rooftop and watch the Great Houses spill each other's blood under the 'cover' of darkness. Spook gives her a final lesson in allomancy, 'It's about what you don't see'. At the Venture ball, Vin and Sazed notice something unusual. They soon find out that this is the last house ball for a while, and that the partygoers are finalizing alliances; . Vin and Elend speak briefly, wherein he ends their relationship. Kliss also reveals herself as an informant, and offers her services to Renoux.  Kliss tells Vin that Elend will be the first casualty in the house war. Vin convinces Kliss to tell all she knows about the attempt on Elend’s life - Elariel assassins will try to kill Elend and two of his friends, and Straff will have reduced the number of guards around the room to make it easier for the assassins. Vin destroys a stained glass window in order to get outside the Keep. Once outside, she makes her way to Elend’s room and fights off the assassins: two Thugs, two Coinshots, and two Mistborn, one of whom is Shan Elariel. Vin manages to stop the assassination attempt, and while fighting Shan, Vin manages to trick Shan (by extinguishing her atium early) and kill her. Mistborn Spoile

The log-book entry at the beginning of this chapter sends us down a long Cosmere rabbit hole. Vin attends a ball held in Keep Lekal. It's the first time she's seen Elend since the house war kicked off, and although he feels nervous about the imminent danger, he reveals some critical information about house Venture's finances to Valette. She's in the perfect position as a spy. Elend is incredibly lucky to have charmed Vin. Without her secret loyalty he would be dead within the week. There is indeed always another secret. The crew returns to Clubs' shop. After watching the Lord Ruler's retaliatory mass executions, the group feels a renewed sense of purpose. The only way the crew can achieve it's goals now that the rebel army is lost, is to ensure that the separate segments of Rashek's government use their resources killing each other. Vin is still recovering from a two week long hangover. That day long petwer drag with Kelsier nearly killed her. Kel seems to think that's a good thing; that she'll be stronger because of it. The crew has as a short conversation about whether or not to continue with their plan now that their army is dead, but before they can finish, Spook rushes in with news. The people of Luthadel are gathering in it's main square. There is only one reason the people gather like that; it's mandatory to watch the Lord Ruler's mass executions. After hearing the news of the Skaa rebel army's exposure and imminent defeat. Kelsier leaves instructions with the crew, and with Vin RUNS to the site of the impending battle. The extended pewter-burn will nearly kill Vin. Despite their efforts the army is as good as dead by the time the two Mistborn find them, with the exception of a small remnant; two thousand or so men who stayed behind. The crew is all together in the same room for the first time in quite a while. So naturally, they start drinking and mock Breeze. What are friends for, after all? Vin has become an accepted member of the nobility, her absence or attendance to social events is noticed. She has regular “dates” and although she's playing everyone around her, we'll learn later that some of the other ball attendees are playing a similar game. The Lady Kliss for example, as we find out later is a political informant as well. Vin has been spending time with this truly detestable group and we're pretty happy knowing that later, the most repugnant of them is killed by Vin herself. She has a confrontational moment with Elend as Vin grapples with some of the terrible injustice's of the Lord Ruler's world. After having returned to Mansion Renoux, Vin is feeling useless, not to mention bored. There is a bit more about the mysterious book Sazed is studying, breeze doubts it's authenticity, but Sazed believes it's more than simple propaganda. We think it's possible that once the ancient text is removed from Kredik Shaw, a giant castle made of steel that ruin cannot see into, Ruin could have already begun manipulating the words inside, but has not.
