E 174. Bird hunting birds with Casey Everett
19/07/2023 Duración: 01h25minFor this episode, we sit down and talk with our buddy, Casey Everett, about small game hunting. Except, when Casey goes hunting, he brings hawks that he taught to trust and work alongside him and then they bring home cool dinners. Yes, he wins the coolest hobby award. We start the show learning about Casey and how he got into falconry as a kid and we learn what it takes for someone to legally trap and keep birds of prey. Then we hear about his first bird and how one time it tore up his hand pretty bad while hunting. Then we dig into the nuts and bolts of the training, which is super interesting. If you listen closely, there's some similarities between what he does and what we do. It reminded me of bringing home a high drive puppy with tons of natural instincts and you have to build trust and a bond and help nurture those instincts so the dog realizes "ohhhhh we're partners here." Casey is a super knowledgeable guy and is really fun to chat with. Enjoy the show and give him a follow and tell him we sent ya. Ch

E 173. "Prevention is better than cure" with Pat Stuart
05/07/2023 Duración: 01h19minToday we had the pleasure of speaking with Pat Stuart from the Canine Paradigm Podcast. Aside from being a highly intelligent, hard working and extremely knowledgeable about training dogs... Pat is truly a great storyteller. His ability to break down complex dog training scenarios and then explain it in a way that makes sense to just about anyone is not something you find anywhere. That's why we called Pat from across the world to chat about dogs, training and hear a few stories from his past. We begin the show hearing about Pat's podcast (which I'd encourage you to check out), his military background and how he got into working dogs. He said being near dogs in the military was so interesting, he wanted to dig into that world more. Some of the conversations we had during the show discuss positive reinforcement training, negative reinforcement training and we talk about the "unforced force fetch." One of the cool parts about listening to Pat is hearing how calculated and intentional he is with everything. The

E 172. Huntymoon Stories with Marie
28/06/2023 Duración: 55minToday we sit down to hang out with our good friend, Marie, from Silver Lion Kennels. You may remember Marie, as she used to work at Lone Duck for a couple years and now she is crushing it with her own kennel over in Acworth, NH. Marie and her husband, Steve, recently got married and instead of going to sit at the beach or snorkel some island, they took the dogs for a midwest hunting trip.... I like to call it a huntymoon. We get to hear about how she took her GSP, Colt, to hunt alongside his father and grandfather and how cool it is to notice similarities between generations and bloodlines. Then they took their other dog, Sprocket, on their first real deal duck hunt and we got to hear about some memorable retrieves and moments from the trip. We end the show hearing more about her business and how she built her 15 run kennel on their property. It's interesting to chat with people about this sort of thing because it's always tough, exciting and fulfilling to create a business like this. We often have people D

E 171. Uplander Life
21/06/2023 Duración: 01h23minThis is a great show and we're excited to share it with you. Tonight, we hang out with Cliff Enzor from Uplander. Cliff is a Michigan guy who grew up hunting and always had good little Brittany bird dogs. We learn that as he got older, he fell more in love with hunting alongside his dogs than sitting in the deer woods. Cliff started the Uplander Lifestyle with his wife and they're making some of the coolest gear you'll find for anyone who likes chasing birds alongside their dog. Cliff has four bird dogs right now and we talk a lot about conditioning, how he wrangles four dogs, pigeons vs quail and Bob tells Cliff about The Mother of Dragons. We also chat about the typical stereotypes people hear about Brittanys and Cliff digs into his lifelong experience to help answer some of those questions. Cliff is a super passionate guy and certainly knows his stuff when it comes to hunting birds and doing so with dogs... this is one of those shows where you pause and take notes for when hunting season rolls around. E 170. "More useful than a 2x4"
13/06/2023 Duración: 01h12minMmmmMMmmmm. Tonight, Bob and Kevin sit down and chat with our buddy, Hunter, over at Kent Cartridge. I'm sure you've heard us talk about how great it feels to sling a few rounds of bizzzmuth down range and how effective it can be when duck hunting but did you know the boys at Kent have a new shot out there? Oh yea. Hunter tells us all about their new product Fasteel+ and how it's not only cheaper than bismuth but packs more of a punch. We also have a very real conversation about how covid changed the industry and supply chain and how Kent Cartridge is working to adapt. Oh, we also hear about dogs eating doves and Bob gives Hunter some advice which can be applicable to many, many people out there. Check out Kent Cartridge, find some of their gear and get on the birds this fall. Want more 1:1 training with your hunting dog? Check out our patreon where you can work closely with Bob. E 169. Elite hunting dog training
31/05/2023 Duración: 01h38minTonight we have the pleasure of sitting with and speaking with our good buddy and talented dog trainer, Blaine Tarnecki, from Hudson River Retrievers down in Georgia. You've heard Blaine on our show a few times now and he is always a wealth of knowledge, whether it's training young dogs, obedience, meticulous handling drills or catching stripers... this guy does it all. On this episode, he and Bob tag team some thorough questions from our patreon friends (you can become one and possibly win a hunt here) and holy cow does it get interesting. Listen to the whole show to get each little snippet of tips and tricks from both Bob and Blaine. A big thank you to Blaine for joining the show and for putting up with Bob, per usual. Cheers to you and enjoy the episode! BTW... if you leave a great review on our podcast, we'll be reading some next week. Thank you!

E 168. Debating E Collars and Force Fetch
24/05/2023 Duración: 02h02sWelcome to Lone Duck's GDIY Chronicles! Today we have a different kind of show so hang with me... I was fortunate to have a conversation with Nick Adair and Jeremy Moore (from DogBone) on Nick's podcast, Gun Dog It Yourself and we meticulously dug into a whole lot on training hunting dogs. While this show was recorded for Nick's podcast, we thought it was extremely honest and educational, so we asked Nick if we could share and post it on our feed, too. We begin by defining "force fetch" and "collar conditioning" and the different ways to teach a dog. There's a lot in the conversation, so I won't detail each portion of the show but the goal was to debate the various ways to train a dog and further clarify each step in the process. We certainly go back and forth a little and we agree and disagree and that's ok. There's more than one way to train a dog and Jeremy has great dogs doing things his way. We have great dogs that are trained the lone duck way. Thank you to Jeremy and Nick for having an open conversati

E 167. Training in drive with Pat Nolan
17/05/2023 Duración: 01h50minTonight we have the pleasure of sitting down to speak with one of the most respected dog trainers in our country, Pat Nolan. We begin the show chatting with Pat and learning about how he got into the dog world and how a unique hobby caused a dog training epiphany for him. We could have spent hours talking with Pat about how this happened and how it evolved over the years to become a successful philosophy... so we'll have him back on the show. In talking with Pat, we discuss "training in drive" and how to shape a dog's behaviors by using their own internal motivation to complete the task at hand. Stay with me here, it's a lot to process and digest but it's brilliant. We then ask Pat how he knows when his dog is ready for the next step in the training process (this is super interesting) and we hear about his online training course, Retrieving from the pup up. Bob and the Lone Duck crew are working through this training course and it's worth the time and energy. One of the best parts of this conversation with P

E 166. How to ethically raise puppies with Megan Comfort
03/05/2023 Duración: 02h45sIt's always a good time when you're talking about puppies and well, tonight was a good time. We had the pleasure of speaking with Megan Comfort from Torg's Labs about every single step in the puppy process. First, we learn about Megan and how she got into this world and shocker, it's a wild and emotional rodeo. Everyone thinks working with puppies is all rainbows and sprinkles but holy cow is it time consuming, stressful and cute all at once. We talk with Megan about some of her memorable dogs and why she would pair them with others, what her goals are for breeding labs, why and how they breed them in an ethical manner and we even mention our good buddy, Dr. Spoo! We also dig into what kinds of things can happen to the momma dog and the puppies during birth. Yes, we dig into all sorts of fun, plus we talk about the first 72 hours of a pup's life and how fragile they are. We talk again about early neurological stimulation and how impactful it can be for a dog, alongside proper socialization. If you have ever

E 165. Hunting Dogs with GDIY's Nick Adair
13/04/2023 Duración: 01h39minFor today's show, we're lucky to have Nick Adair (from the Gun Dog It Yourself podcast) in the house and boy, do we have a good time talkin' dogs. Nick is an absolute dog man and anytime you can trade stories with someone like that, it's just easy, natural and the best time ever. We kick off the show with Nick asking about Bob's southern trip (Nick runs our show better than we run our show) and how he schedules training for the year. Then we dig into Nick's passion for working dogs. Nick spent some time chasing coons behind a dog and we hear about how he got into obsessively learning about, and working alongside, dogs. Then we hop into stories about his three hunting dogs, how he came by each one and how each unique dog is special. It's cool to hear how Nick has special hunts with each dog but if you take a step back and look at why each moment was memorable, it boils down to the same thing: working hard alongside your dog YOU coached is an unreal experience, every time. Want to train your own dog but you n

E 164A. Upland Gun Company and Nick Larson
05/04/2023 Duración: 01h40minThis week we're happy to sit down and hang out with our good friend, Nick Larson from the Birdshot Podcast. We always enjoy spending time with Nick and picking his brain about all things grousey but we also had the opportunity to learn more about the Upland Gun Company and all the cool stuff they're doing. If you're looking for a piece of art to carry around the woods and pass down through the family, then you should absolutely check them out and consider building your own custom gun. Yes, you read that correctly... build your own custom gun. We talk with Nick and learn about all sorts of stuff like english grips, what he looks for in a gun, Nick's advice for people getting fitted for a gun, and a ton more. Then we jump into a good discussion catching up on Nick's dogs and we learn how he coached his younger dog, Rose. She has had a couple seasons under her belt and is really becoming a fantastic grouse dog, so it's nice to learn more about ol' Rose. Bob and Nick talk through how people should walk up on a p

E 163. Gun Dog Mag & Kali Parmley
28/03/2023 Duración: 49minTonight was awesome. We had the pleasure of sitting down and talking dogs and hunting with Kali Parmley of Gun Dog Magazine. We learned how she got into the outdoor world, made her way to be the Editor in Chief at Gun Dog Mag and is now launching a new show called Wild Upland. The show airs April of 2023 and showcases all the things we love: chasing birds alongside good dogs, the adventures of a hunt and a well-earned beer at a cool local spot you wouldn't find on a map. Kali is a great storyteller and you can feel her passion for wild places and wild game as she shares stories from past trips all over the country. Personally, I can't wait to watch and rewatch her show because it'll be a goodie. Be sure to check out the great articles they're pumping out at Gun Dog Mag! E 162. "Finding moments within the hunt"
22/03/2023 Duración: 01h19minFor tonight's podcast, we had the pleasure of chatting with Jake Smith, the man behind The Pointing Dog Journal, The Retriever Journal and Just Labs Magazine. We begin the show learning about Jake's background, his books and how he got into the outdoor world. We chat a little about some of our favorite stories and how they've shaped our experiences in the outdoors. Is anyone else a big fan of Gordon MacQuarrie... I know I am. Then Jake talks a little about how other people can get into the writing world and we dig into some of the great moments we've shared hunting alongside dogs. We learn about Jake's dogs and find that he is also a Setter Man-- he has great taste in dogs and guns. It was fantastic meeting Jake, learning about his time in the outdoors and sharing stories with each other. It's funny how easy it is to connect with someone over a few stories about old guns and bird hunts. If you're interested in learning more about Jake, then check out his two books here and here. E 161. Wingshooting, dogs & old shotguns
15/03/2023 Duración: 01h01minTonight we sit down with Lars Jacob, a wingshooting coach, meticulous gunfitter and the type of guy who knows his way around the grouse woods. We begin tonight's show hearing about Lars' work coaching people to shoot effectively on the wing (check out his website here) and then dig into the types of habitat grouse and woodcock call home. Then we hear about how the shooting sports have evolved over time and today's shooter is much different than the past. We talk with Lars about the differences between shooting clays and real birds and finally we talk guns with Lars. It's always fun to speak with people who are experts in their field but it's rare you can speak with someone like Lars who I'd consider an expert in wingshooting, shotgun history, grouse and woodcock, bird hunting and more. Honestly, it was a treat to sit down and chat with Lars and we're grateful for his time on the show. If you're interested, I'd highly encourage you to check out his website and learn more. E 160. A Dog Named Beautiful with Rob Kugler
07/03/2023 Duración: 02h17minTonight's episode is a bit different than our usual retriever training and hunting stories and I know you're going to enjoy the conversation as much as we did. It finally happened. After what seemed like forever, we finally got the chance to record an episode with our buddy, Rob Kugler. Rob is an extremely special guy with a unique story to tell about his life, his family, his service and his dog. If I had to describe Rob, I'd begin with his character and reference his passion, determination, resiliency and selflessness. He is a fantastic storyteller and the next two hours will have you on the edge of your seat, laughing and pretending not to cry. Rob truly embodies "the unspoken bond" and it's one of the many reasons we appreciate him. Cheers to you, Rob. If you're interested in hearing more of Rob's story or just want to support him because man, it's the right thing to do.... then check out his book here. 27/02/2023 Duración: 01h42minAlright, folks! Kevin Cheff The Retriever Coach is back for the second part of this mini series and if you thought part one was thorough, then you haven't seen anything yet. In this episode, Bob and Kevin Cheff discuss the fundamentals for creating a phenomenal dog and the drills used to get them there.... and stay there (that part is important). Here's a few topics they review: teaching multiple marks, wide open marks, developing confidence with memory, Kevin breaks down a training schedule for a Master level dog, we run through check down birds, the ABC Drill, live flyers and then we dig into water. Holy cow, do we dig into water. We review simple water marks (

E 158. "Establish high standards" with Kevin Cheff (Part One)
22/02/2023 Duración: 01h17minTonight we have one of our favorite guests back on the show, Kevin Cheff, the Retriever Coach. We catch up with Kevin and learn about his new online coaching platform he calls Fetch... you should check it out if you haven't yet. The main topic of tonight's conversation is super timely. We discuss important drills and tasks to do right now before your dog gets back into advanced training and the hunt test season rolls around. One of the themes I noticed in the conversation with Kevin was simplification and establishing high standards with your dog training. Kevin does an extremely thorough job of explaining how he does this with drills and how to correct the dog properly during the drills. We talk about a whole bunch of topics like: holding blind manners, wagon wheel, refining targeting, having discipline with your dog, reviewing swim by to keep your dog crispy and stalling at the right time, marking drills, retired guns and walking singles. Oh, just all those topics? Yes, and with meticulous detail. In fact

E 157. Retriever Training Plans & Shredder Bob
08/02/2023 Duración: 54minWelcome, welcome. Oohhhhh baby. Today's podcast is with Kevin and Bob where we chat about a whole bunch of things so settle in for a goodie. First we chat about the D-O Double G, Miss Prairie Dog and how her hunting season has been. As some of you know, we have been spending more time with her in the field as Memphis is getting a little older (more to come on that), and she is doing a fine job. We also hear about Bob's sabbatical to Costa Rica. Is that Kelly Slater? Nope, just Uncle Bob The Shredder out there riding waves, saving lives and eating fish like locals. (Insert hang ten emoji) Finally, we get into some of the plans and goals for Lone Duck Kennels in 2023... you won't wanna miss them. Please listen until the end if you need a motivational speech from Bob. Cheers to you. If you're reading this far down, then you should go read through the force fetch course to see how Bob coaches dogs... you'll be glad you did. With the course, you get Bob's personal help so you can feel more than confident in for

E 156. Retriever training: How pros collar condition a dog
25/01/2023 Duración: 01h55minToday's episode is devoted to properly collar conditioning your dog. Using an e collar is controversial and some trainers use them, some trainers do not, some people think their dog is "too soft" for them and some dogs (most dogs when used properly) jump up and down in excitement when the collar comes out. Because of this confusion, we decided to create the most in depth episode to teach anyone and everyone to be confident and educated enough to collar condition their own dog. In this show, we call several professionals to hear their specific routine for collar conditioning protection dogs, pet dogs and hunting dogs. We hear from Blaine Tarnecki from Hudson River Retrievers and The Brown Dog Academy, Adam Campbell from Campbell's Hillside Kennels and the Doghouse Podcast, Oscar Mora from Elevated Canine and then Bob finishes the show by explaining his process. Listen to this show and if you have questions, please reach out to anyone who chimed in on this episode (links to contact them are above ^^) If you'

E 155. Running Rabbits with the Beagle Bard
20/01/2023 Duración: 52minToday we have the pleasure of speaking with a real beagle man, Bob Ford. Aside from having a great name, he's also a fellow dog man who loves being out in the woods while carrying a gun and following his dogs.... I know I can relate. If you've read anything about beagles and chasing rabbits, you've probably read some of Bob's work. He has been in all sorts of magazines and has even written some awesome books. If you're interested in his work, then you should check out his website here. We have a great conversation and dig into Bob's years and years of experience running trials and raising fantastic rabbit dogs. It's always great speaking with highly passionate people and you can hear how driven Bob is regarding his faith, his writing, his dogs and runnin' rabbits! Do you want more Lone Duck? Check us out here! Want to learn how Bob teaches force fetch? Lone Duck is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Crew. If you enjoy our show, then you'll enjoy the other great shows in our network.
