  • E 154. "Control is the key to the work" with Carlos Ramirez

    10/01/2023 Duración: 01h15min

We're kicking off the new year with one of the coolest episodes we've done on our show. We had the pleasure of sitting down to speak with Carlos Ramirez to hear his story and how he's working in the K9 world. We begin learning about Carlos' time playing sports, traveling and how he started going to school for training dogs. Let's just say, he certainly didn't have an easy road to becoming the trainer that he is today... it took time, patience and grit. Then we chat about genetics and the major role that it plays in both the gundog world and the protection world. It's interesting to think about the differences between two working breeds but it's astounding to think about the similarities and how much crossover there is in training. We go on to hear about Carlos' time working alongside Mike Ritland and his time at the Warrior Dog Foundation. If you're like me and you think it's fascinating to think about what special forces dogs can do... just wait to hear how he had to gain their trust and work with dogs of th

  • E 153. "Age is not a disease for dogs..."

    28/12/2022 Duración: 01h02min

Tonight, we chatted with our good buddy, Dr. Joe Spoo (The Gun Dog Doc... check him out!), about all things sporting dogs. First, we talk about chasing upland birds and hear about Joe's lab (that he said he'd never own... and he explains why). Then we dig into a couple of Joe's late dogs. We chat a little about why chukar are great for training but overall, they're just the worst. Then we hear about Joe's newer dog, a Cocker Spaniel and how she's just the coolest little dog. Joe's spent some time at Spaniel trials and highly recommends anyone in the dog world check them out. We continue chatting with Joe and talk about sporting dogs and how they're athletes and how you can adjust your hunting to match (and support) each stage in the dog's life. Joe has years and years of experience as a Vet and has interesting thoughts on keeping your dog healthy and in the field longer. We talk about tick-borne diseases and common injuries and his thoughts on them. Joe also gives Bob some interesting thoughts on Memphis and

  • E 152. Jolly Ol' Saint Bob

    24/12/2022 Duración: 48min

*Uncle Bob ruins Christmas for children so don't listen to this in the car with your kids. Tonight, Bob and Kevin do a quick look back at the year of podcasts, interviews with cool people, good dogs, memories and hunting trips. After the holly jollies, we do some good Q&A that came in and here's a few examples: managing dog training and family, force fetch questions (learn how Bob force fetches dogs here), mouthy dogs on birds, plans for Bob's winter trip, best dogs ever and the top things to work on with a 4 month old pup. Not sure if people actually read these little descriptions but regardless, we wanted to say thank you to anyone listening. This podcast has been a great adventure for us both and we're grateful for those who listen and those who join us to chat dogs over a beer. Cheers to you. Buy Bob a beer via patreon and join us on our patreon only duck hunt next season.... Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Podcast Network

  • E 151. Texas & Oklahoma hunting with a side of cutting cattle

    18/12/2022 Duración: 01h21min

Tonight, Bob and Kevin review the long roadtrip Bob took from New York to Texas to Oklahoma and then back to New York. You'll hear about the goals of the trip and how Bob got to spend time wrangling cattle like a real man. A few highlights to mention here: hunting swamps with a coon dog in tow, almost burying the truck in the middle of no where, Prairie Dog gets the call to hunt some midwestern birds, hunting with Memphis, etc. Then we dig into some Q&A from people. Some of the topics include: why good duck dogs need discipline, expectations of a young dog, holding birds vs bumpers and proper force fetch. We also talk about the benefits of floating food and how to fix a hard-mouthed dog, what comes first: collar conditioning or force fetch and then we dig into the difference between American, British and English Labs. • E 150. Mastering Force Fetch

    18/11/2022 Duración: 42min

Tonight Bob and Kevin share some big news about force fetch. Yes, that's right... it only took ~700 days to get this project wrapped up but hey, who's counting? If you would like to force fetch your dog in the way Bob does it, then this project is for you. Hit us up, let's work together and help create a bad to the bone, confident, retrieving machine out of your dog. We can do this. Oh, we also share some news about a project we've worked on for literally two years. Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Podcast crew.

  • E 148. Gluten free dog training

    27/10/2022 Duración: 01h40min

Welp, tonight's show is a doozy (& maybe not one to enjoy while the kids are around). We have the pleasure of enjoying a couple drinks with Marie Madaras, a dog trainer working alongside Bob for the past 18 months or so, and Grayson Guyer of Lost Highway Gun Dog Kennels. Grayson has been on the show before and he is an awesome trainer and storyteller and this is Marie's first time AND it's her last week working at Lone Duck Kennels. Let's just say we had a little celebration and thought why not turn it into a podcast, too? Topics include: all sorts of BSing, Marie likes horsing around, grouse and woodcock hunting in NY, how to be a dog trainer, what makes good animal trainers, how Bob wants to take a six month hiatus and Marie's kennel, which you can (and should) check out here. • E 147. Pat Burns: Setting a bomb-proof foundation

    26/10/2022 Duración: 52min

Tonight is special because we get to hang out with Pat Burns, we get to pick his brain about how he develops strong, confident dogs by building a bomb-proof training routine andddd hear about his new project he's been working on... Bob and Kevin talk with Pat about his Bomb-Proof Basics course he is launching soon and he is inviting people to a free webinar on 11/01 and 11/02 at 8pm EST. If you're interested in meeting Pat, asking him questions, etc. you can check out their website here and sign up to join the show. We also get to hear about the three dogs Pat took through his training and how each dog learned and progressed. It's very interesting to hear Pat speak about each dog and their owners because he's very meticulous and passionate. • E 146. Good dogs help great people

    13/10/2022 Duración: 01h03min

Tonight we sit down and chat with Craig Zimmer of Hero to the Line. We learn about Craig's background, how he got into the dog business and how he got started this non profit that introduces veterans to the sporting dog world. It's good to know there's people like Craig out there who are actively coaching and encouraging people to join this community. In the show, Craig mentions that the hunt test and waterfowl hunting community is full of hard working, patriotic people who are willing to help each other and work together... not a bad transition if someone is a veteran and looking for a new hobby. If you're a veteran listening to this show and you're interested in learning more, or you're someone who wants to help pitch in to support this cause, then please reach out and we'll help connect everyone. • E 145. Hardcore Dog Training with Wolfhaus K9

    29/09/2022 Duración: 01h40min

Tonight, Bob and Kevin sit down and talk dogs with Courtney Wolf from Wolfhaus K9 and this is a show you won't want to miss. First, we learn about Courtney and how it feels to jump out of a plane but then we hear how he got into the dog world. Most people we speak with talk about building confidence in their dogs, searching for good genetics to create certain desires in a dog, creating a relationship, etc..... and we're talking about gundogs. Well, tonight we're talking about that but with police dogs and dogs that "want to eat you." It's always super interesting to chat with people from the bite dog world because the stakes are so much higher and there's a ton of parallels from their world to ours. We also talk with Courtney about being a decoy and what it's like to have dogs run you down and how to coach dogs through that process. We talk about making good dogs, what "good dogs" means to each of us, what makes good trainers and most importantly, we hear about his dog, Pig. Overall, this was a really cool

  • E 144. Freddy King on dog training

    21/09/2022 Duración: 01h21min

I'd be shocked if you haven't heard Freddy King's name or seen any of his work on TV... it's everywhere and he is the man. Freddy has helped thousands of gun dogs by coaching their owners via hundreds of how-to videos and tonight, he helps the Lone Duck Community. Tonight, we sit down with Freddy King and we talk about everything imaginable. We learn how Freddy got into dogs and we have the "dogs of a lifetime" chat. You know, the one where some people swear you only get one good dog in your life and others have that dog a few times. Then we talk about The Retriever Trainer and how Freddy can help people (check it out here). We talk about how he adds realism to his training so even the dogs who don't retrieve thousands of ducks per year can still gain experiences. We end the show as Freddy shares his most memorable retrieve, a common question we like to ask people. Well, Freddy sure has an uncommon answer. • E 143. Behind the scenes...

    09/09/2022 Duración: 01h30min

Well, tonight we tried something new. We have a lot of people ask about our patreon happy hours and what they are and why we do them, etc. so we thought we'd share one. This is a one time deal because they're exclusive to our community but they all said it'd be fun to hop on a podcast, so here we are. We get a lot of awesome dog training questions and hear how other people's dogs are doing as we all gear up for hunting season. Settle in, listen up and let us know what you think. If you'd like to join the happy hours and have a drink with Bob, check it out here. Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoors Podcast Crew

  • E 142. Building Elite Retrievers with Pat Burns

    02/09/2022 Duración: 01h55min

Tonight we have a very special podcast for a few reasons. First, Bob and Blaine host the show together, which is something we haven't done before but also, we had the extreme pleasure of chatting with one of the greatest dog trainers around, Pat Burns of Elite Retrievers. Pat has 3+ decades of training and competing at the highest levels possible. Think about that for a second...because it's wild. He is one of the most knowledgeable trainers currently in the game and boy, do we dig into some awesome training discussions. Bob, Blaine and Pat chat about a variety of training topics that you could apply to your dog (regardless of the level they're currently at). They begin discussing the importance of building trust and challenging dogs, especially with high level dogs. Pat emphasized that each dog should have a strong foundation and he encourages people treat it like an investment in the dog's lifetime, so don't rush the small steps. He also pointed out that most people fail because of the "simple" things at a

  • E 141. Brown Dogs on Campus

    24/08/2022 Duración: 01h02min

It's an extra special show because we have Blaine Tarnecki from Hudson River Retrievers at Lone Duck Kennels. Blaine, his wife and their swarm of little brown dogs are staying in NY for a couple weeks to get out of the hot, southern sun. After dining on some finely smoked fish from a recent trip that Blaine took out west, we sit down over a drink to chat about gun dog training, fishing for Stripers and we answer some really detailed training questions. Overall, we had a pretty awesome time and I think you'll enjoy. *Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Podcast Network.

  • E 140. I need a Duck Camp Dinner with Chef Jean-Paul

    12/08/2022 Duración: 01h22min

Tonight was extremely special for the Lone Duck crew because we not only got to hang out with our patreon friends and talk dogs and hunting but then we jumped on a very special call to meet a new friend. Tonight, we (at least from our side) became best friends with the creator of Duck Camp Dinners on the MeatEater youtube channel and wildly talented chef and Bronco man, Jean-Paul. We had one of the best conversations with him and heard about his show and what he's excited to share in their second season (which airs 08/12/2022). What we enjoy about his show is how relatable and authentic it is to the deer camp, ice fishing and duck camps I've been to. It's impressive how they nail it but also so simple because that's really how it is when you hang at a duck camp with your buddies... they just turned their good times into a show we all love and appreciate. I hope you listen and enjoy our episode with Jean-Paul. He's extremely passionate, driven and thoughtful and hey, the guy can shoot ducks and cook 'em like a

  • E 139. A Field Trial Breakdown

    29/07/2022 Duración: 01h11min

Tonight, Bob and Kevin sit down to chat about a whole bunch of topics but first we review the latest field trial bird by bird and dog by dog. We dig into what went well and what went wrong and how to train for these situations. We also get into Bob's new strategy for field trials. Then we dig into a few good questions from patreon people about the beginnings of Lone Duck and starting a kennel and what it actually took to get to today. Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Podcast Crew. If you're looking for some new shows, new content, new videos.... check 'em out.

  • E 138. Training duck dogs and learning to carve decoys with Jeff Coats

    22/07/2022 Duración: 01h04min

Tonight, we had the pleasure of hanging out with our good buddy, Jeff Coats, from Pitboss Waterfowl. Jeff probably doesn't need an introduction because this is his hat trick episode on the podcast, he is a legend on social media, tv and anytime someone says the words "seaduck hunting." All that said, did you know Jeff is an absolute dog man with lots of experience training and running dogs in hunt tests? Well, Jeff took a little time off but he is back in the game... this time alongside his awesome wife, Karen. One of the reasons we enjoy spending time with Jeff is because he is such a great storyteller and tonight, we hear some goodies. He and Bob chat about how Jeff got into hunt tests in 2001 and we hear about some of his dogs from way back. Then we dig into his new dogs, Rye and Mac, and how they're doing as Jeff and Karen get back into competition. Finally, we hear a few tips and tricks about passing (and failing) Junior dogs at various hunt tests. Next, we hear about Jeff's passions and how he keep wat

  • E. 137 Elite gundog training & elite nutrition

    14/07/2022 Duración: 02h04min

Tonight's show is jam packed with all sorts of training advice for building one heck of a dog. We chat with our buddy Ray Voigt from Purina about his time as a dog man. Ray worked alongside & learned from some of the greatest trainers of our generation (you'll hear who in the show). We hear how Ray gives corrections, how he handles dogs who do not give effort and what he considers "effort." We talk in depth about increasing effort on down the shore blinds and other difficult scenarios. We hear a very detailed explanation of Ray's methods for teaching hold and transitioning throughout force fetch and walking fetch and we learn how to oversimplify training for dogs. Many people ask us about 3 handed casting and well, we chat about that, too. One of my favorite quotes from this show was when Ray said to coach dogs by making the right thing to do, easy , and making the wrong thing to do, hard. We have such a highly detailed conversation about such intense training that we almost run out of time to chat about Pu

  • E 136. Advanced Retriever Training with Oliver

    18/06/2022 Duración: 01h08min

Tonight we kick back with our good buddy from Foundation Retrievers, Oliver. He made the long trip up north to do some training with the Lone Duck crew and it's only fair that we bother him on a podcast. We doe some shot for shot questions with Oliver about hunt tests, how to get dogs to pass, his thoughts on training dogs during the heat and a ton more. Bob and Kevin also share a few old stories of past hunting trips and how Bob is grumpy at 5am when Kevin is trying to toss decoys out of the boat. Lone Duck's Gun Dog Chronicles is part of the Waypoint Outdoor Podcast Crew. Check 'em out anywhere you find your shows.

  • E 135. Ducks and Dogs with Sean Weaver of MeatEater

    08/06/2022 Duración: 01h38min

Tonight we had the pleasure of sitting down to hang out with MeatEater's Duck Man, Sean Weaver. If you haven't seen his show on youtube, Duck Lore, then you're missing out and need to rethink life a little. On the show, we hear about Sean's time growing up as a hunter, how he got involved in ducks, memorable retrieves, awesome hunts he has been on, and more. We also hear about his dog, Kace, and how her training is going, where she is from and the wholeeee deal. We also dig into some Duck Lore action and Sean's plans for the show and why he made it the way that it is (which we respect the heck out of). Finally, we ask Sean for his thoughts on the bird flu and how that may influence duck numbers, which snowballs into a super interesting conversation about the prairie pothole region, tamies and wild ducks and a lot, lot more. Thank you to Sean for joining us on the show and for working hard to positively influence the duck hunting community. If you're reading this, then you'd be a fan of his show... check it
