21/01/2020 Duración: 02h03minIn his recent dissertation, Dr. Isais Wellington Smith (pugilist and LA Native), explores and unveils the culture of Los Angeles boxing exploring cultural and racial tropes as well as the pedagogy of styles. Written from first hand experience as a fighter and cutman. While boxing doesn’t have transparent acts of racism nuance can be found within the language of gyms, ‘Black fighter’s cannot take a body shot’ or ‘Mexicans are different... you can hit them with everything and they keep coming.’ Additionally, we spoke about how American black fighters are pigeonholed into adopting a role as an antagonist as opposed to be other Nation’s fighters. In this edition of the podcast, Jay Boost sat down with Trevor and Garrity and told his entire story. He survived getting shot on two separate occasions in his young 20s. The most incredible part of his story is when he taught himself how to walk again after being paralyzed from the second time he got shot. He walks with a limp with his right leg that drags, but other than that he's absolutely ripped everywhere else. As he goes through his story from start to finish, Jay Boost has always seemed to have one foot in each world. One in the streets, and one on the right path. He told us all bout his boxing career from his start in the amateurs at 11 years old to an up and down pro career that was intertwined with his time in the streets. He is also the founder of Gloves Not Guns, an organization dedicated to using boxing as a tool to combat gun violence by connecting the growing fitness boxing community with nonprofit gyms in high crime areas.
