I’m not telling you anything Christians don’t already know very well, but born-again believers in Jesus are not exempt from struggles in this life. But if you’re in the midst of a trial right now, prepare to be encouraged because, in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Romans, we now come to chapter 5 where the Apostle Paul gives us three reasons Christians always have reason to rejoice in the Lord. Let’s join Pastor Brian now as he picks up our study at Romans chapter 5, verse 1, and gives us “Reasons for Rejoicing.”

Last time, in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Romans, we started taking a close look at the saving faith of Abraham, the father of the nation of Israel. We heard first where our faith must be placed ... squarely on God Himself, not on ourselves or our works. Let’s join Pastor Brian now as he picks up our study at Romans chapter 4, verse 18, and gives us a better understanding of a faith that saves.

Today, Paul will share the good news that righteousness and peace with God is still possible, completely apart from our best efforts or spiritual heritage. As we've heard, he's made a crystal clear case proving the desperate spiritual condition inherited by every person on earth, including God's chosen people, the Jews. So far, Paul has addressed two possible objections to his letter, and today, we'll hear what he had to say about two more anticipated objections. Last time, in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Romans, we started looking at chapter 2 where the Apostle Paul rebukes those who are tempted to judge themselves on a curve, rather than by the perfect standard of God’s law. So far we’ve heard three characteristics of that kind of justification, including being intrinsically blind to our own faults, claiming to be innocent of sins because we haven’t technically committed a particular act such as murder, and deceiving ourselves into thinking our own insightfulness makes us experts on what is wrong with others. Let’s join Pastor Brian now as he picks up our study at Romans chapter 2, verse 1, and reminds us not to compare ourselves to others. The question we should be asking is, “How Do We Rate with God?”

It’s human nature to try to explain away our own failings and sins, to say in effect, “I’m not perfect … but I’m sure better than THAT guy!” Well, as we begin to look at chapter 2 in our verse-by-verse study of the Book of Romans, we’ll be reminded that such rationalizations are absolutely useless with God. Let’s join Pastor Brian now as he picks up our study at Romans chapter 2, verse 1, and asks the question, “How Do We Rate with God?”

Today, we’ll hear what Paul had to say about sexual sin and the result of continual disobedience in that area in particular. As we heard, the first thing that defines unbelief is a suppression of the truth, aggressively and continually striving against it. As we’ll hear today, that suppression of the truth also leads to the distortion of the truth, manifested in some pretty blatant ways in our world today. Verse 16 begins with this bold statement, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God to salvation.” Pastor Brian says there are four key words in verses 16 and 17 that tell us why we should never be ashamed of the gospel.
