As an athlete Welch was a 3 x NCAA Division I All-American, winning the Big 10 Championship and making the NCAA finals during his senior year. Jason won the famed 49th Midlands tournament hosted by Northwestern and led his squad to its highest team place at the tournament with a second-place finish.Welch attended Las Lomas High School, where he made four state finals and three state championships, Welch amassed 119 consecutive victories and an overall win-loss record of 194-7.
