Carpal tunnel syndrome is a progressively painful hand and arm condition caused by a pinched nerve in your wrist. Bound by bones and ligaments, the carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway — about as big around as your thumb — located on the palm side of your wrist. This tunnel protects a main nerve to your hand and nine tendons that bend your fingers. Compression of the nerve produces the numbness, pain and, eventually, hand weakness that characterize carpal tunnel syndrome. Postpartum depression is a moderate to severe depression, which affects mothers within a year of giving birth. It is most likely in the first three months. Far to frequently these days I find myself explaining to someone that I don't have their prescribed medication in stock and that I won't be able to get it for them anytime soon due to a long-term national shortage. In 2010, 178 drug shortages were reported to the FDA, a record number and triple the number from 2005. This week we'll be discussing swimmer's ear, a common problem as we take to the water during the hot summer months. “Swimmer's ear,” or “otitis externa,” is an inflammation involving the skin of external ear canal. This inflammation is almost exclusively a result of bacterial infection. There are an estimated 2.4 million health care visits in the US each year because of swimmer's ear. Celiac disease has been known by many different names in the medical literature over the years, including gluten-sensitive enteropathy and celiac sprue (which is different from tropical sprue). Celiac disease can be defined as a permanent intolerance to the gliadin fraction of wheat protein and related alcohol-soluble proteins (called prolamines) found in rye and barley. Celiac disease occurs in genetically susceptible individuals who eat these proteins, leading to an autoimmune disease, where the body’s immune system starts attacking normal tissue.
