May is national Lyme disease awareness month, and today I wanted to take the opportunity to tell you a little about the disease. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted to humans by the bite of infected blacklegged ticks. Initial symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migrans. If left untreated, infection can cause arthritis, numbness, facial paralysis, and heart arrhythmias. Consequently prevention, early detection, and treatment are key. Tomorrow, April 22, marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and the Environmental Protection Agency. In 1970, President Nixon and Congress established the US EPA in response to the growing demand by the public for cleaner water, air and land.
