It is not in our greatest setback that we find ourselves in the most danger, but in our greatest success. Babylon had become blinded by its pride and God declared His judgement on them. God’s people had been put through a great affliction, yet he still gave them a hope.

Despite God using Babylon as an instrument of judgement, He could not continue to permit their pride and haughtiness. Even in the midst of a corrupt society, God called Daniel as a witness to Babylon and to appeal to their emperor.

In the Old Testament, Jeremiah the prophet had appealed to the leaders of Jerusalem for decades to turn to God but they despised him and treated him cruelly. Leaders have a great responsibility in shaping those in their care, and if they don’t the results can be devastating.

At a time when Babylon looked unstoppable, Jeremiah prophesied their impending downfall. Jeremiah’s prophecy Babylon’s unlikely downfall would serve was a sign to Judah. Ultimately, the day would come when all that Jeremiah had been pleading for would be fulfilled.

The Elamites were an ancient civilisation located east of Babylon. During the time of Nebuchadnezzar the Elamites were ‘auxiliaries’ to Babylon; they were party to the destruction of Jerusalem with the Babylonians.

The people of Hazor & Kedar felt that they were safe and secure because they were not wealthy. They may have felt that they were too insignificant for God to be worried about their sin. We see in the book of Jeremiah that it doesn’t matter who you are, God will hold all people accountable.

Damascus was a prosperous city devoted to Jerusalem’s destruction. It was a beautiful, wealthy and popular city yet both Isaiah and Jeremiah prophesied of its destruction.

Esau and Israel shared the same father but became national enemies. God declared that Edom would be judged for it’s wickedness. Wickedness which could be traced back to a place of envy Esau harboured towards Israel.

The Ammonites came from unfortunate origins. Like his older brother Moab, Ammon was shown favour by God yet he mocked Israel and the God of Israel. God’s response was not to just punish Ammon but to reveal himself to them.

Sometimes the most broken people are the most successful. Moab enjoyed ease & prosperity and had grown proud and hard-hearted. Even though Moab had experienced God’s favour for centuries they never sought his approval, yet God continually reached out to Moab.

For Israel, God was in their foreground. But for Moab, God was in their background. Even though God showed Moab his favour, Moab never invited God into their foreground. Moab confused the reason for God's favour and convinced itself that God was not the cause. Moab's confidence was in the wrong things. Where is your confidence?
