Josef Martinez gave Atlanta United an early lead, but missed opportunities and a late penalty allowed New England to walk away with a point in an infuriating 1-1 draw on Wednesday night in Foxborough. Martinez gave the Five Stripes the lead with their first shot on target. A trickling Julian Gressel cross meandered past three Revolution players in the box and to the feet of Martinez who finished with ease. The half ended with its lone clear chance as the difference. Atlanta United quickly rebounded from their midweek loss against Sporting Kansas City by defeating Orlando City 2-1 Sunday night in the Sunshine State(it was raining during the match, but whatever). It didn’t take very long for Atlanta to find the back of the net, as they took an early 1-0 lead after Greg Garza drew a penalty and was pulled down in the box by Cristian Higuita. Josef Martinez stepped up to take it and converted in the 10th minute after his feint run-up caught Joe Bendik guessing the wrong way. The goal was Martinez’s eighth of the season. Things got even better for the Five Stripes, as Greg Garza’s cross into the box found Ezequiel Barco, whose shot kissed the bottom of the crossbar and found the back of the net in the 31st minute. Alec Kann, who was returning from a knee injury and had yet to play for Atlanta this season, stepped up big in the absence of suspended Brad Guzan with his only save of the first half coming in the 44th minute. The good guys went into the break with a 2-0 lead. K

A 30th minute red card sent Atlanta United down to ten men and Sporting Kansas City outscored the short-sided Five Stripes squad to come away with a 2-0 road win on Wednesday night in a matchup between the Eastern and Western Conference leaders. It appeared as if Atlanta United had taken the lead inside the first five minutes but a Josef Martinez goal was negated by our friends in the VAR lair who deemed him offside in the most polarizing decision of the night. If it’s any consolation, Atlanta United lost its first ever game last year to the New York Red Bulls before an outstanding season saw it become one of only a handful of teams to make the MLS Cup Playoffs in its first season. Year two started off with a loss as well, but today, Atlanta didn’t look as if it belonged on the same pitch as the Houston Dynamo.
